Kajheri resident stabbed, attacker arrested

Chandigarh, Aug 26 — A Kajheri resident was today stabbed by a migrant labourer following an altercation here this afternoon.

According to police sources, Chander Shekhar and Ashok Kumar were quarrelling with each other near the village market and were using foul language. This was objected to by Jasbir Singh, a resident of the village, who pointed out to them that some of the village womenfolk were present nearby.

Upon hearing this, the duo stopped fighting with each other and attacked Jasbir Singh. While Chander Shekhar showered blows on him, Ashok Kumar ran to his house nearby, brought out a kitchen knife and stabbed him.

Jasbir Singh was taken to the Sector 16 General Hospital and was discharged later.

While Ashok Kumar was nabbed by residents of the area, Chander Shekhar ran away. Both the accused hail from Uttar Pradesh.

A case under Sections 324, 34 and 506 of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 36 police station.

Bag snatched
Mrs Sudershan Malhotra, a resident of Sector 15, reported to the police that her bag containing Rs 2,500 and ornaments was snatched by an unknown person from near the Sectors 11 and 15 underbridge.

A case under Sections 379 and 356 of the IPC has been registered.

In a similar complaint, Mr Harminder Singh, proprietor of a Sector 17 gas agency, has reported that his bag containing one gold chain and important documents has been stolen.

A case under Sections 457 and 380, IPC, has been registered at the Central police station.

Pedestrian hurt
Mr Sham Lal, a pedestrian, was hit and injured by a scooter (CH-OI-W-357) near the General Hospital roundabout.

Bharat and Indu Kumar, the scooterists, have been arrested. The injured has been admitted to the hospital and a case under Sections 279 and 337, IPC, registered.

Held with smack
Joshep, a resident of Sector 40, has been arrested for possessing 40 gm of smack.

A case under Section 21 of the NDPS Act has been registered at the Sector 39 police station.

Eight held
As many as eight persons have been arrested for committing various offences in the city.

Two persons have been arrested for roaming about under suspicious circumstances.

One person was taken into preventive custody.

One person was arrested for creating nuisance at a public place while under the influence of liquor.

Four persons have been arrested for gambling at a public place.

Drug peddlers
Following a tip-off, the Haryana police caught two drug peddlers red-handed on Wednesday night.

Over 150 gm of smack was recovered from the pockets of the two Nigerians, Roh and Uddoh, after the police raided their residence in Sector 17. A case under Section 21 of the NDPS Act has been registered at the Sector 5 police station.

The two were selling smack at Rs 600 per 2.5 gm. The Ilaqa Magistrate remanded them in judicial custody for 14 days.Back

PU reappear exam in Oct

CHANDIGARH, Aug 26—Reappear examination of students of Panjab University who missed the examination in January this year will be held in October.

A press note issued by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad joint secretary, Jagtar Singh, who met the coordinator of the honours school examination in a delegation said a note in this regard had been issued by the assistant registrar, a press release said here today.

The examination will commence on October 4.

The last date of filling of forms is September 10 without late fees, following which the students will be charged Rs 500.

Students will have to pay late fees of Rs 1500 after September 17.

List of demands
The Panjab University non Teaching Employees Federation has submitted a list of its demands to syndics.

Letters in this regard have been forwarded to various office holders and members of the syndicate which meets tomorrow.

Payment of medical allowance, increment for improvement of qualifications, proper filling of vacant posts, additional posts and organising regular JCM meeting figures prominently on the list.Back

End-of-season mango at Rs 80

CHANDIGARH, Aug 26 — Most of the commonly used fruit have witnessed a fluctuation in their prices in the local market during the past one week.

'Baggugosha' recorded the maximum change in its price. A kg of the fruit, priced between Rs 40 and Rs 50 a week ago, could be purchased today for Rs 30 in different sector markets. The wholesale price has come down from Rs 500 to Rs 400 per 16-17 kg pack. According to traders, the fall was due to a good crop and more arrivals in the local market from parts of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. They predicted that the price would further go down during the coming week.

Guava has also become cheaper during the period. A kg of the fruit, priced at Rs 20 four days back, could be purchased today for Rs 13 to Rs 15. The wholesale price has reduced from Rs 15 to Rs 10. According to traders, the arrivals this year were satisfactory and the fruit was flooding the market, resulting in low prices.

Similarly, the price of 'cheeku' has come down from Rs 60 to Rs 40 a kg, while plum was stable at Rs 40 though its crop was almost over. "You won't find the fruit next week", said a trader.

There was no change in the prices of different varieties of apple. If a kg of the royal variety could be purchased today between Rs 40 and Rs 50, the same quantity of golden variety could be purchased for Rs 25 a kg in retail and for Rs 300 per 18 kg pack. The price of pomegranate was stable at Rs 50 a kg in retail and for Rs 160 per 5 kg in the wholesale market.

Papaya has also become cheaper. A kg of the fruit, priced at Rs 20 during the past one month, could be had today for Rs 16 to Rs 18 in retail and for Rs 12 in the wholesale market.Similarly, the price of grapes has come down from Rs 100 to Rs 70 a kg. In the wholesale market, a 3.5 kg pack could be purchased for Rs 200.

On the other hand, there has been a big hike in the price of mango as the crop is almost over in most parts of the country. A kg of the fruit, available for Rs 50 last week, could be purchased today for Rs 70-80. The wholesale price has jumped from Rs 300 to Rs 400 per 6 kg.

Mausambi could be relished by paying Rs 40 for a dozen in retail and for Rs 90 for 3 dozen in wholesale market.Back

 


Big win for Haryana auditmen

CHANDIGARH, Aug 26 — AG ( Audit ), Haryana, played a superb game to outplay Maruti Football Club at 4-1 on the seventh day of the Chandigarh Senior League Soccer Tournament at the DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, ground here today.

The AG team, consisting of experienced national players, dominated the proceedings right from the start of the match and in the 5th minute right striker Sanjeev opened the account for them by scoring the first goal.

The deficit did not deter Maruti Club from playing a more neat and balanced game . But the experience of the auditmen played its role and in the 12th minute of the match, left striker Suraj scored through a solo efforts to make it 2-0 in favour of the AG team.

But in the 25th minute, the star player of Maruti Club, Pushpinder, headed the ball into the goal, thus reduced the margin to 1-2. However, the AG players did not lose efforts and with continued pace Suraj gave a diagonal pass to right striker Sanjeev whose brilliant shot in the 33rd minute gave another goal for the AG team.The half-time score was 3-1 in favour of AG team.

In the second half, both teams were exhibiting keen football, and in the 67th minute Harvinder Pal succeeded in scoring a goal to make it 4 -1 for his team.

Ball badminton
The third Chandigarh Junior State Ball Badminton Championships will start tomorrow at SGGSS School, Sector 35. This three-day tournament has attracted nearly 33 teams, including 19 boys and 14 girls teams.

The first match of the championship would be played between the hosts, SGGSS School, Sector 35, and Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 32, in the boys section.

During the meet, probables for the Junior National Ball Badminton Championships, to be held in Rajasthan in the month of November, will also be selected .

Harsimran Brar
Harsimran Singh Brar, a student of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 16, and a bronze medallist in the National Schools Games held at Nasik last year got the first position in the Inter-School Swimming Tournament organised by the Education Department, Chandigarh . Harsimran won in the under-19 section of the boys event in the tournament.

Shivalik Trophy
Chandigarh Football Association will organise the Shivalik Trophy for under-14 boys from August 29, according to a press release of the association. Players born on or after January 1, 1985, will be eligible to take part in the tournament. The entries close with Mr P.S. Brar, Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 35, on August 28.

Guneet Raikhy clinches trophy

CHANDIGARH, Aug 26 — Local girl Guneet Raikhy won the juniors trophy gross in the just concluded A.V.T. South India Ladies Amateur Open and Handicap Golf Championship which was a categorised tournament recognised by the Indian Golf Union (L.S.) held at Cosmopolitan Golf Club, Chennai. Despite a four-stroke penalty on the first day she kept her cool and steadily improved her performance during the subsequent three days. Gunneet is a student of DAV School, Sector 15, Chandigarh.

Shruti Khanna of Delhi won the A.V.T. South India Ladies Amateur Open Championship and local girl Parnita Grewal was the runner-up.Back
