BATHINDA
Condemned:
The PSEB Engineers Association, Lehra Mohabbat, has condemned the board management for its ineffective policies which had brought the board to the brink of economic disaster. In a press note issued here on Sunday, Mr D.S. Bhullar, Regional Secretary of the association, said at a meeting of the association, the management was urged to accept the genuine demands of the engineers which included the grant of hardship and commissioning allowance. The engineers would launch a stir, if the management failed to resolve the issues as agreed with the central executive of the association, he said.

FAZILKA
Nominated:
Mr Anoop Nagpal, former President, Block Youth Congress, here has been nominated General Secretary of the Punjab State Youth Congress by Mr Jagdish Chander, General Secretary, All-India Youth Congress, and in charge, Punjab unit. Mr Arvind Sharma, also of here, has been nominated General Secretary of the Punjab Youth Congress by Mr Devinder Singh Babbu, President of the Youth Congress, Punjab.

FEROZEPORE
Caught red-handed:
A junior engineer and a linesman of the Punjab State Electricity Board were caught red-handed when they were allegedly accepting bribe. Giving details here on Saturday, Mr Hardial Singh Mann, SP, Vigilance, Ferozepore, said the arrested were JE Tilak Raj and Linesman Joginder Singh. The former was posted at Dharamkot and the latter at Jivarai village, Guruharsahai.

Rallies: The Congress nominee for the Ferozepore parliamentary seat, Mr Hans Raj Josan, on Sunday addressed election meetings at several villages including Nurpur, Sethan, Toot, Bazidpur and Jhokeharihar, falling in the Ferozepore cantonment assembly segment. He was accompanied, among others by Mr Ravinder Singh Sandhu, former MLA. Mr Josan condemned the functioning of the SAD-BJP Government and alleged that during the rule of the Badal government innocent persons were implicated in false cases.

Lawyers' panel: Mr Harichand Kamboj, Mr Rakesh Arora and Mr Suhdev Singh Nagpal have been elected President , Secretary and Vice-President, respectively, of the Ferozepore District Bar Association.

HOSHIARPUR
Held:
The police arrested Raj Kumar of Narialan village on Saturday and seized one desi pistol of 12 bore along with one live cartridge from him.

LUDHIANA
Painting competition:
A state-level painting competition and exhibition was organised by the Sardar Sobha Singh Memorial Foundation at Government College for Women on the death anniversary of Sardar Sobha Singh. Jatinderpal Kaur and Jasveer Kaur bagged the first and second position in the composition category, while Jyoti and Varmeet Kaur bagged the first and second positions in the portrait painting category.

NAWANSHAHR
Poll rally:
Mr Parkash Singh Badal and Mr Vinod Khanna, a BJP candidate from Gurdaspur, along with senior SAD, BJP leaders, will address an election rally in favour of Mr Satnam Kainth at Dana Mandi, Banga, near here, on Wednesday, informed Mr Jatinder Singh Kariha, Zila Jathedar, SAD.

‘Boycott’ LS poll: The district unit of the Indian Ex-Servicemen League at a meeting held here on Saturday under the presidentship of Mr G.S. Sahota decided to boycott the Lok Sabha elections as no political party was sincere towards solving their problems. The office of the DPDO had not been set up yet here and ex-servicemen belonging to this district faced a lot of inconvenience as they had to shuttle between Jalandhar and Hoshiarpur, alleged Mr Sahota.

PATIALA
Federation:
The following have been elected office-bearers of the Young India Federation for 1999-2000: President - Mr Parminder Singh Kanboj; Vice-President- Mr Rahul Markande; General Secretary - Mr Narinder Singh Dimpy; Chief Counsellor - Mr Vikram Sharma and Treasurer- Mr Raminder Pal Singh Rana.

Three held: The police arrested Jeewan Lal, Ashok Kumar and Tejinder Singh on Saturday. According to SSP, Harpreet Singh Sidhu, Jeewan Lal had connived with the other two accused to murder his wife and brother. He had promised Rs 1 lakh to the two for committing the murder. Mr Sidhu said the two came on Saturday from Delhi to take the money when they were apprehended by the police.

Adult education camp: The Municipal Commissioner, Mr K.S. Kang, inaugurated the 26th free adult education camp organised jointly by the local Rotary Club, mid-town and the State Bank of Patiala, Arya Samaj branch, exclusively for 50 women here on Sunday. The camp project in charge is Master Jagdish Chander Kumar. Mr Kang lauded the efforts of the club in eradicating illiteracy.

PATHANKOT
Sapling plantation:
As many as 120 saplings were planted at the Sailli road on Saturday by members of the local Lions Club.

Poster contest: The Lions Club Chandigarh Central organised a peace poster contest at Manav Mangal High School, Sector 21, here on Saturday in which more than 100 students participated. The contest was aimed at sending across the message of peace and its importance in today's world. The prize-winning entries were prepared by Arshdeep Kaur (class VII), Anchal Sharma (class VII), Shradha Jhanjee (class X) and Shantanu Banerjee (class X).

Office-bearers:
A meeting of the Ropar circle of the Ministerial Services Union of the Punjab State Electricity Board was held at the 66-KV substation here on Saturday. Members of the union from Ropar, Kharar, Zirakpur and Lalru blocks participated in the meeting. The following were elected office-bearers of the union: President — Mr Surinder Pal Singh Mohali; Senior Vice-President — Mr Harinder Kaur; Vice-Presidents — Mr Bal Krishan and Mr Dilawar Singh; and Secretaries — Mr Balkar Singh, Mr Ram Murti and Mr Kirat Singh.

SONEPAT
Murder:
A youth, Krishan, was reportedly shot dead on Saturday by some persons while he was asleep in his house at Butana village, about 40 km from here. A land dispute is said to be the reason behind the murder. Mr Sahib Singh, a brother of the victim, lodged a complaint with the police. Two persons were arrested in this connection.

Seminar: The Shaheed Yaadgaar Sangthan organised a seminar in memory of Netaji Subhash Chander Bose in Swami Dayananda Senior Secondary School here on Saturday. The speakers recalled the sacrifices made by Netaji and called upon people to remain united and maintain the unity and integrity of the country.

Probe urged: Residents of this city, on Sunday, demanded a high-level probe into the complaints of malpractices by Mr Kaushik, a former clerk in the subregistrar office, here and stern action against him.

SIRSA
Arrested:
A proclaimed offender, Avtar Singh, alias Pappi, of Abubsahr village in the district, was arrested on Saturday. He had stolen valuable articles from the Kala Tittar Tourist Complex and a case under Section 380, IPC, was registered against him on complaint of Ramchander, an employee of the Tourism Department on February 23. He was arrested but he absconded after being released on bail.

NAHAN
Bijli adalat:
To redress the grievances of electricity consumers like delayed electric connection, over billing, shifting of electricity lines or poles etc or other related problems, the Electricity Department will organise a bijli adalat on Tuesday at Nahan. Mr B. Kapoor, Executive Engineer, HPSEB, Nahan division, said that problems of the consumers would be sorted out on the spot.

NURPUR
Fair:
The district-level Nagni Mata fair was held on Saturday at the Nagni Mata Temple, nine km from here. Mr V.K.Aggarwal, Deputy Commissioner, Kangra, who presided over the fair, led a colourful shobha yatra on this occasion. Artistes from the District Public Relations Department and Nurpur Block Literacy Campaign Committee presented a colourful cultural programme.
