Photo exhibition:
An exhibition of photographs titled "The Colours of Life" was inaugurated at the Indian Academy of Fine Arts by Mr K.J.S.Singh, Deputy General Manager, Punjab Tourism Here. Photographs taken by Mr Sanjeev Chawla are on display till August 22. This exhibition is being organised by the North Zone Cultural Centre.

Member appointed:

Theft:
Certain thieves entered into the house of Mr Parbhu Dayal Rangbulla in Basti Hazoor Singh locality here on Thursday and took away jewellery and some cash. The theft was detected when his servant came on Thursday.

Commendation certificate:
Dr Mukhtiar Singh Gill, senior scientist, Punjab Agricultural University has been awarded a commendation certificate by the district administration of Amritsar, in recognition of his work in the field of rural demonstration at the training centre for self-employment at Padhri Kalan, Amritsar.

MOGA
Potable water:
Residents of Smalsar village in this district on Friday complained that they have not been supplied potable drinking water for the past one-and-a-half month. They said the pumping station here has been lying idle and the authorities concerned have failed to get it repaired.

Medical check-up: The Punjab Government directed the Transport Department to make arrangements for the regular medical and eyesight check-up of its staff, particularly drivers, to avoid accidents. The government has also directed the department to check encroachments on road-sides. top

Criticised: A meeting of the Chandigarh UT Employees Co-ordination Committee was held under the chairmanship of Ms Harjinder Jawandha on Friday. It criticised the central government for not accepting its demands regarding restoration of the post of Chief Commissioner, abolition of the 60:40 ratio of officers from Punjab and Haryana, implementation of ex-gratia payment orders and job reservation for dependants.

Seminar: The Secretary general of the Authors Guild of India, Mr Rajinder Awasthy, said at a press conference on Friday that the AGI would celebrate its silver jubilee in the city. A two-day seminar on 'Impact of Info-Technology on Literature' will be organised at the English auditorium, Panjab University, from Saturday.

Elected: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Punjab Civil Secretariat Sahit Sabha: President — Mr Jarnail Hoshiarpuri; Vice-President — Mr Karnail Singh Sahota; and General Secretary — Mr Surinder Singh Kohli.

Fast: The indefinite fast by teachers in front of the office of the DPI Schools in Sector 17, entered the 26th day on Friday. Teachers from Ropar also participated in the protest to press for their demands.top

Abduction:
Harbans Singh, a Jat Sikh of Singpura village, was arrested on Thursday by Kalanwali police on the charge of rape and abduction of a minor girl. A case under Section 363, IPC, has been registered. The girl had been restored to her mother.

Died: Jagdish Chautala (48), younger brother of the Haryana Chief Minister, Mr Om Parkash Chautala, died after brief illness at Apollo Hospital, Delhi, on Thursday. He was undergoing treatment.

Suicide: Jaswant Singh and Lajo Bai of Kariwala village allegedly committed suicide here on Thursday by consuming poison. They committed suicide because they had come to know about their affair. They died while being shifted to the Civil Hospital.

Commits suicide: Jaspreet Kaur allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself in her house on Thursday. According to informed sources, she had married Rinku 11 months back. The cause of suicide is not known.

Arrested: Baljit Singh was arrested by Mandi Dabwali police from Sigewala village on Thursday. Mr B.S. Sandhu, SSP, said here on Friday that the accused had stolen a truck of Gurnam Singh from Darpan Cinema, 60 km from here, on August 15.

LPG leakage: Four persons, including a four-year-old baby Neha, was injured seriously when a fire broke out due to the leakage from an LPG cylinder in the house of Vishva Mittar at Rampura Bishnoian village on Thursday.

Missing: The police has failed to trace Ms Ramandeep Kaur of Mandi Dabwali who has been missing for the past one week. In a complaint lodged with the police her mother-in-law, Ms Surjeet Kaur, has alleged that Ramandeep was abducted by Kulvir Singh, who was in love with Ramandeep. A case has been registered.

SONEPAT
Strangulated:
Gopal was allegedly strangulated to death by some persons at Gangana village under Baroda police station of this district on Thursday. An illicit relationship with a woman was stated to be the cause of the murder.

Ration shop: Resentment prevails among residents here against brick-kiln owners who are overcharging as the authorities concerned have failed to check it. They alleged that certain brick-kiln owners had been charging between Rs 1,800 and Rs 2,000 per 1,000 bricks as compared to Rs 1,470 per 1000 fixed by the District Magistrate. They have sought a high-level probe into the racket and stern action against those involved in it.

Memorandum: Residents of Matindu village in this district on Friday sent a memorandum to the District Food and Supplies Controller demanding action against the depot holder at the village for allegedly depriving them of their monthly quota of rationed sugar and kerosene for the past few months. They seized a drum filled with kerosene which was being taken by the depot holder for selling it in the black market.

Faulty transformer: Many areas of the city on Friday remained without power for several hours because of a fault in the transformer near Shiva Temple and Chhoti Masjid. The supply was cut around 5 p.m. and was restored at 9.30 a.m. Residents alleged that frequent power breakdowns, trippings and low voltage have become a routine.top
