Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Aug 20 — Chaos and confusion prevailed at the enquiry counter in Panjab University where BA II results were being shown to the candidates here today.

The counters were heavily crowded where individuals enquired about their results. The students had to wait long to know results as these were shown only in the afternoon. University authorities said that the circular carrying information about the declaration of the result clearly said that it would be declared in the afternoon.

A student from Ropar said there were others as well who had come from far off places to know their results.

The university could have displayed a notice saying when the result would be declared on the campus, he said. "Non-availability of the gazette in my college in the morning prompted me to rush to the university. However, when I reached here, there was already a big rush of students from another college," a girl student said.

Another student said the results were normally sent to colleges. However when students reached their colleges in the morning, they came to know that the result would be declared later.

Nearly all 28 seats left vacant belong to special categories. Only two vacant seats in the Department of Ancient History belong to the general category. Seats in the general category fell vacant because the students changed their subjects, sources said.

The vacant seats would remain untouched till August 26, following which, these would be declared open for other categories, sources said. The third counselling session will take place on August 30.

A total of 3,066 students applied for the course. More than 1,900 candidates appeared for the interview for 485 seats, sources added.

Consumer Courts
Case against school dismissed
Tribune News Service

CHANDIGARH, Aug 20 — The UT Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has dismissed a complaint by some students of Leather Garment and Technology and other courses against the Avi School of Fashion and Shoe Technology, Sector 35.

The complainants — Lavi Kumar, Vineet Malik, Vikramjeet Singh and Gagan Gupta — had pleaded that the respondent was running the AVI school in fashion and shoe technology and had issued a prospectus, in which apart from prescribed fee for the course, it had promised facilities for imparting training and education in the course. Lured by the prospectus, the complainants applied for garment and shoe technology and other courses and were selected for admission in 1996.

The complainants alleged that during the course, they found that the respondent had given false representation in the prospectus as there was no resource centre material and library wing, except for a few pieces of waste leather, outdated books and magazines, which had no relevance as far as the course was concerned. There was no appropriate machinery and expert professional guides either from within the country or from abroad to take classes. The first semester went without classes for want of faculty in the relevant field and no laboratory facility, video tapes or recreational facilities were available.

They alleged that the hostel lacked facilities. In the second semester, the course of study imparted was different than that undertaken by the complainants and some of the subjects were the same which they had studied in the first semester. It was the same with the third and fourth semesters.

Faced with this, one of the complainants joined the Central Leather Research Institute, Chennai's regional centre at Jalandhar, while others left the course midway. They prayed that the institute management had duped the complainants by giving false information in the prospectus and the heavy amount paid by them had been wasted. The complainants sought compensation and refund of the fee while presenting copies of the receipts of the payment made by them.

Hearing the arguments, the forum said the complainants took admission in their respective courses in 1996 but complaints were made by them in 1998, and not immediately after noticing the alleged deficiencies. The facts alleged by the complainants were complicated and required evidence to establish the alleged allurements by the respondents. As the complaint of having been duped amounted to criminal offence, for which the remedy lay before the criminal court, the case should be dismissed without any costs.Back
