BATHINDA

Dental care
Under the awareness of dental health in children scheme the Lions Club, Bathinda Surya on Saturday organised a dental check up camp in the local Bhoj Raj Jain School in which 188 students of the school were examined. Dental problems were treated on the spot and medicines given free of cost. All students were provided with tooth brushes also. The club plans to examine 5,000 students in current year, according to Mr Parshotam Dass Gupta, president of the club.

FATEHGARH SAHIB

Crop insurance
Punjab PWD (B&R) Minister Harmel Singh on Saturday said that the government was going to launch "crop insurance" scheme in the state. Addressing villagers after laying the foundation stone of an animal dispensary at Unchi Rurki village he allayed farmers' fear on the newly set up Dairy Development Board. He also announced a grant of Rs 50,000 for village's developmental projects.

JALANDHAR

Bank election
The elections to the Central Cooperative Bank ( zone 15) was won by Mr Rajinder Singh Johal here on Saturday. He defeated Mr Sadhu Ram of SAD
(Badal) by a margin of 70 votes. The elections to 14 other zones were held in June, but the election to this zone were withheld due to a stay order.

Mela
The annual Prof Mohan Singh Memorial Mela will be held on October 20 and 21. This was stated by Mr Jagdev Singh Jassowal, founder-chairman of the Mohan Singh Memorial Foundation here on Saturday. During the mela, poetry-recitation competitions, dramas and qawwalis would be held.

New SSP
Mr Sat Shard Chohan on Saturday took over here as Senior Superintendent of Police. Mr Jarnail Singh from Barnala took over as Superintendent of Police (Headquarters) in place of Mr Surjeet Singh who has been shifted to Tarn Taran.

Mushaira held
The local Rotary Club (Mid-town) and the North Zone Cultural Centre jointly organised a mushaira here on Friday evening in which poets from northern region participated. The mushaira was organised to celebrate the ninth publication of book Parvaz-e-Jigar by Shiromani Sahitkar Janab Jigar Jalandhari, a noted poet.
Awareness
The District Child Welfare Council observed girl child Meena awareness week here from September 22 to 26 and organised competitions on girl children by different schools. Poetry recitation contest was held at Shakuntala Girls School and Mr Sukhwinder Khanna, president of the council presided over the function. Mr H S Sidhu, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation was the chief guest. Ms Surinder Kaur Grewal, chairperson, Punjab State Women Commission explained the meaning of Meena.

Blood donation camp
As many as 150 defence personnel donated blood at a camp organised by the Lions and Lioness Club here in coordination with the Punjab branch of the Indian Red Cross Society at the Air Force, high grounds in Chandigarh on Friday. The camp was inaugurated by Station Commander Group Captain S.S. Nannar.

AMBALA

Reservation system
The computerised reservation system at the railway station here remained suspended till 3 p.m. on Saturday. The problem occurred on Friday after a cable was damaged due to digging by workers of a company which had undertaken the project of four-laning of the National Highway 1. The reservation at the Patiala railway station was also affected.
Halt timing
The Swaran Jayanti Shatabdi train from Amritsar to New Delhi will halt for two minutes at the railway station here with effect from October 2. This was stated by a spokesman of the railways.
Booked
The police has booked Pawan Kumar on the charge of murdering Mr Shamsher Singh of Humanyupur village under the Naggal police station on Friday. Enmity is said to be the cause of the crime. A case under Section 302 of the IPC has been registered.
Appointed
Dr Harbans Lal, an MLA from Sirhind, has been appointed president of the Punjab unit of the National Human Rights Protection Council by Dr Viresh Shandliya, National President of the Council.

FATEHABAD

Suicide
Saroj, a teenaged girl from Ahlisadar village in the district, has allegedly committed suicide by consuming pesticide. According to reports, she had an altercation with her sister which led to the suicide.

Sewing machines
Mr Sudhir Rajpal, Additional Deputy Commissioner, distributed 180 sewing machines to women belonging to backward classes. He also distributed cheques of Rs 10,000 each to 11 women of backward classes for the marriage of their daughters.
Convicted
The Additional Sessions Judge, R. K. Bishnoi here has sentenced Kishan Chand of Pachgaon village, to undergo three and half years rigorous imprisonment on the charge of inflicting serious injuries on Mukesh of the same village. The court acquitted Joginder and Satbir of the charge giving them the benefit of the doubt. The court also fined of Kishan Chand Rs 5000.
Teenagers
The following have been elected office-bearers of the Teenagers Welfare and Cultural Association: president — Jitender; vice-president — Sachin Bhardwaj; general secretary — Laxman; secretary — Ashwani.

HISAR

Scooterists killed
Two persons were killed when the scooter they were travelling by collided with a Haryana Roadways bus near Bithmara village, 40 km from here on the Hisar-Tohana road on Saturday. The deceased have been identified as Rati Ram, a resident of Dhani Jaidev, Hisar and his worker.

Gang busted
The district police has busted a gang of thieves here with the arrest of Jagdish, Satish and Bhola Ram. Mr Ranbir Sharma, Superintendent of Police, said here on Saturday that the police recovered three televisions sets, ornaments, one revolver, some cartridges and other household goods from them.
Arrested
The police arrested Santosh Gupta, a retired principal of a government school, for allegedly attempting to molest a girl here on Friday. A case under Sections 292, 294 and 509 of the IPC has been registered.

ROHTAK

Rape
A 14-year-old girl was allegedly raped by Kanwar Singh, a Haryana Roadways employee, at the Hari Singh locality here, a few days back. According to a complaint lodged by the victim, the accused, a friend of her father, had come to her house on September 17 when her parents had gone to their native village and committed the crime. A case under Section 376 of the IPC has been registered.
Doctor held
A doctor of the civil hospital at Bahadurgarh town in Jhajjar district was arrested on Saturday morning for causing hindrance in the performance of official duty. As a result other doctors of the hospital went on an indefinite strike in protest against the police action. The doctor who was on night duty and manhandled a constable of the Haryana Police who had come along with a witness of a case to get his medical check up done. The doctor allegedly misbehaved, abused and even manhandled the cop. The police booked the doctor under Sections 355 and 186 of the IPC and arrested the doctor on Saturday morning.

SONEPAT

Shot At
Vikki, a local resident, was shot at by certain armed youths in Sector 14, a residential colony of the HUDA, on Saturday. He is stated to be out of danger. A case has been registered.
Thefts
Resentment prevails among residents of the Mahabir colony and its surrounding areas against a spate of thefts committed by a gang of thieves in the past two weeks. The residents urged the Superintendent of Police to order night patrolling by the police in a bid to check such thefts.

YAMUNANAGAR

Lok Adalat
A Lok Adalat was held at the Jagadhri court on Saturday which was presided over by Mr C.B. Jaglian, Additional District and Sessions Judge. As many as 519 cases were settled at the adalat.

Himachal Briefs
HAMIRPUR

Lok Adalat
As many as 92 out of 339 cases put up before the 504th Lok Adalat of the state were decided here on Saturday. The adalat was chaired by Mr Vinod Kumar Sharma, District and Sessions Judge, Hamirpur. An official spokesman said on Saturday that compensation worth Rs 4.97 lakh was awarded in nine cases.

SUNDERNAGAR

Cases settled
A camp under the programme "Prashasan Janta ke Dwar" was recently organised at Behli village, in the subdivision. The camp was organised under the chairmanship of Mr Vijay Chanden, SDM. As many as 125 cases were settled at the camp.
