The following have been elected office-bearers of the tehsil unit of Class IV Employees Union of Education: president — Mr Naresh Kumar; chairman — Mr Jagat Singh Gill; senior vice-president — Mr Sohan Lal; vice-president — Mr Davidpal; general-secretary — Mr Ram Lubhaia; and treasurer — Mr Yash Pal.
Eye check-up camp
As many as 305 patients suffering from various eye ailments were examined and 29 cataract operations were performed at a four-day free eye check-up camp held at the local Hindu Charitable Hospital on Sunday.

LUDHIANA

Meeting
A meeting of the local chapter of the People for Animals was held here on Sunday. The Additional Deputy Commissioner, was the chief guest. He said treatment would be provided free of cost to sick and injured stray animals.

MOGA

Power failure
The entire town plunged into darkness on Sunday and almost all functions proposed to be held here were either postponed or cancelled. The power supply which was cut-off at 7 a.m was resumed at 10 p.m. According to an official spokesman of the PSEB, the repairs of wires and other equipment was responsible for this breakdown.
Arrested
The district police has arrested an alleged kidnapper, Balwinder Singh, from Charik village under Baghapurana police station. A teenaged girl, Balwinder, whom he had kidnapped from a village in Ferozepore district was recovered from his possession. This was stated by the officiating Senior Superintendent of Police, Mr Satish Kumar Asthana, on Monday.

PATHANKOT

Marathon
An expedition comprising a team of 16 Army jawans was flagged off from here by Brig Deepak Kapoor on Sunday. The aim of this is to promote the spirit of adventure and to boost the image of the Jat Regiment and the Indian Army. This run had started from Jaurian in Jammu and Kashmir and will end at Delhi.
De-addiction campaign

The local unit of the Nasha Virodhi Parchark Manch organised a rally on Sunday against drug-addiction. The manch decided to organise more rallies and meetings to educate people about addiction, according to Mr Sukhwinder Singh, president of the manch.
Medical camp

A free eye operation camp was organised by the Chamunda Samaj Samiti here on Sunday. About 800 patients were examined and 125 eye operations performed by a team of doctors from the Gurdaspur Civil Hospital.

Seminar

The local Lions Club (Patiala Citizen) conducted an aids awareness seminar in which 500 persons participated, Col G.B. Singh (retd), president of the club, said here on Monday. Pamphlets on AIDS were distributed among the participants.

The following have been elected office-bearers of the Drivers and Karamchari Union, Patiala (PSEB): president — Mr Jameet Singh; vice-president — Mr Raghbir Singh; general secretary — Mr Surjit Singh; and treasurer — Mr Chandan Singh.
Black badges

Members of the PSEB Draftsmen Association, Patiala unit, wore black badges here on Monday in protest against the non-acceptance of their demands.

The following have been elected office-bearers of the Council of Junior Engineers (PSEB): President — Mr Rupinder Kumar; secretary — Mr S.P. Bansal; senior vice-president — Mr Bhupinder Singh; vice-president — Mr Gurbachan Dass Batish; and finance secretary — Mr Taranjit Singh.

PHAGWARA

Special train sought
A deputation of local Senior Citizens Council met the Divisional Railway Manager, Ferozepore division, Northern Railways, Mr Narinder Kumar Goyal, and sought the opening of a special window at the railway station here for the aged. It also demanded the introduction of an Amritsar-Hardwar express train for pilgrims.
Parking licences
Licences of those contractors will be terminated who were found overcharging for vehicles parked at the railway sheds or other official parking places. This was stated by Mr Narinder Kumar Goyal, Divisional Railway Manager, Ferozepore division, Northern Railways, on Sunday.

Stereo thief
The Judicial Magistrate, Mr A.K. Bishnoi, on Tuesday convicted Rajesh Kumar, a resident of Mauli Jagran, of the charge of theft of car stereo. The magistrate, however, ordered his release on probation for six months. The convict was directed to file a probation bond of Rs 10,000 apart from furnishing a surety of the like amount.

Fire
Property and furniture were gutted in a fire which broke out in a restaurant, near the Dabra Chowk here on Sunday.

KURUKSHETRA

Fraud case
Sukhvinder Kaur, an agent of the Golden Forest, Pehowa, has been arrested under Sections 420, 467, 471 and 511, IPC, for allegedly duping the local Punjab National Bank branch of Rs 6,827 with the help of Mahender Kaur of Bhakhli village in the district. This was stated by the Superintendent of Police, Mr Y.P Singhal.

SIRSA

Dharna
The local unit of Forest Karamchari Sangh staged a dharna in front of the office of the District Forest Officer here on Sunday in protest against the illegal felling of trees at Dharampura village in Kalanwali subdivision. They demanded that the persons responsible for this should be apprehended.
Rozgar yojna
As many as 31 candidates were sanctioned Rs 20.95 lakh under the Prime Minister's Rozgar Yojna and 10 applicants were given Rs 4.10 lakh under the self-employment scheme. This was stated by Dr Avtar Singh, Deputy Commissioner.
Molestation
Devi Mehra and Billu, both local residents, were arrested on Sunday by the police here on the charge of allegedly molesting a girl in her house. In a complaint to the police, Ved Parkash, a local resident, alleged that the accused entered his house and misbehaved with his daughter when she was alone in the house. A case has been registered under Sections 452 and 354, IPC.

Died
Amit (5) of Sammerpur died of wasp stings in Kangra subdivisional hospital on Sunday. Dr Ashok Sharma, SMO, said the child was admitted in a serious condition and died later.

The Himachal Pradesh Ministerial Services Union has supported the agitation of the Ministerial staff in Punjab. The union at a gate meeting in the US Club condemned the Chief Secretary of Punjab for not implementing the directions of the Chief Minister of Punjab. These meetings will be held till September 27.
