HOSHIARPUR

Old-age home
An old age home to house 60 senior citizens will soon come up in this town. The construction of the home, named "Varidh Ashram" will start on September 21. The building will have 30 rooms, a library and a dispensary, according to the Hindu Gauraksha Sabha general secretary, Mr Vishnu Digambar. The sabha has donated land for the ashram.

KAPURTHALA

Loans for farmers
The Technical Education Minister, Punjab, Dr Upinderjit Kaur has said that to free farmers from the clutches of commission agents the government has been trying to simplify the procedure for getting loans from banks. Addressing a rural function at Latiawala village on Saturday she said that now farmers could obtain Rs 1 lakh as loan on one acre land and the loan amount would be deposited in their accounts and could be withdrawn by them according to their needs.

KHARAR

Career guidance
The local Rotary Club will organise a career guidance-cum-exhibition camp at Khalsa Senior Secondary School here on September 22.
Medical camp: As many as 250 persons were examined at a heart care camp organised by the Youth Club at Nia Shehr village, near here, on Saturday. Mrs Satwinder Kaur Dhaliwal, MP, Ropar, inaugurated the camp. She also announced a grant of Rs 25,000 for the club.

MOGA

Eye camp
A one-day free eye operation camp was organised by the Seva Bharti here on Saturday. Seven hundred thirtyfive patients were examined and 80 eye operations were performed by a team of doctors from Christian Medical College, Ludhiana, headed by Dr Bhatti. The camp was held on the premises of the local Sat Pal Baba Murlidhar College and Hospital Medicines, food and spectacles were also given to the patients free of cost. This was the 13th such camp to be held during the past one-and a-half year by the Seva Bharti.

Overturns
Sixteen passengers travelling in a private transport company bus were injured, four of them seriously, when the bus skidded and overturned near Chandan village, 8 km from here, on the Moga-Kotkapura road on Saturday evening. The accident reportedly took place when the bus driver tried to save a jeep coming from the opposite direction and bus overturned due to the slippery road.

Camp for sugar mill employees
The State Cane Commissioner, in collaboration with the local Doaba Co-Operative Sugar Mills, organised a one-day training camp on the mill premises to provide training to the officials and employees of the sugar-mills of the state about the "moist hot air seed treatment instrument" here on Friday. As many as 60 officials and employees from the sugar mills of the state participated in it.

Sangat darshan
The fourth sangat darshan programme was organised by the district administration at Kathgarh village about 25 km from here, on Friday. Majority of the complaints related to water shortage, bad roads, school buildings, erratic power supply, sewerage, and release of old age pensions. Dr Roshan Sunkaria, Deputy Commissioner, speaking on the occasion said that a Rs 26 lakh would be spent on the repair of 458 kms of link-roads in the district and in the Balachaur Assembly segment.

Customer service programme
The local branch of Punjab National Bank organised a "customer service programme" here on Friday. Mr K.L. Dua, Senior Regional Manager, listened to the suggestions and complaints of the customers and redressed a number of complaints on the spot.

Medical check-up
The local Doaba Social Welfare Society organised a free medical check-up camp at the nearby Atal Mazara village on Thursday. A team of three doctors examined more than 200 patients. Medicines were also given to needy persons free of cost, according to a press note issued by Mr Vasdev Pardesi, press secretary of the society.

The following have been elected office-bearers of the Lions Club (Greater): president — Mr V.S. Verma; vice-president — Mr S. Mahajan; general secretary — Mr Ravi Gupta; and treasurers — Mr K.L. Baboota and Mr Ashok Sudan.

PATIALA

Competition
The State Bank of Patiala organised a school programme at Government Primary School at Main village in the district. Sports, poetry recitation and essay writing competitions were organised and in which 250 students participated. The function was attended by members of the village panchayat and parents of the students.

Lok Adalat
As many as 47 cases were settled at a lok adalat organised at Nabha in the court of Mr Vijay Singh, Additional Civil Judge (Senior division) and Mr B.S Deol, Civil Judge (Junior division) on Saturday. Mr Gurdeep Singh Mahal, Assistant District Attorney (Legal services) District Court Patiala, said that the next lok adalat would be organised on November 7 at Samana on November 28 at Nabha, on December 12 at Rajpura and on December 19 at Patiala.

Central Bank of India
Nearly 400 saplings were planted by employees of the Central Bank of India (Rajpura) at the new site of DAV Public School on Sunday. This was stated by Mr Ajit Kumar Sharma, Branch Manager of the bank. Mr Raj Kumar Khurana, ex-minister, inaugurated the plantation drive.

Grievances heard
The state Education Minister, Ch Swarnram, the Deputy Commissioner of Kapurthala, Mrs Usha R. Sharma, and the SSP Mr Iqbal Singh, heard grievances of people at nearby Mauli village on Saturday. Addressing a gathering the Minister said that Rs 60 crore would be spent on building 12000 houses to be given free of cost to the persons of the Scheduled Castes in the state.

Campaign
The Phagwara City Junior Chamber (Jaycees) launched a drive on Sunday against non-biodegradable garbage especially plastic bags. Posters exhorting the public to avoid the use of plastic bags as these block sewerage and produce harmful gases were distributed and use jute on paper bags instead.

SANGRUR

Case solved
The police claims to have solved the case of murder of Major Singh, a resident of Alipur village under Amargarh police station in the district, according to Mr Arpit Shukla, district police chief. Jagtar Singh, son of the deceased has been arrested in this connection. During investigations, Jagtar Singh confessed his crime and stated that his father had become an alcoholic and that he killed his father because of his bad habits.

FATEHABAD

Government College for Girls
To promote cultural and extra-curricular activities in the newly set up Government College for Girls here, the college management will soon start a unit of the National Service Scheme and a platoon of the NCC in the college. The college will also organise a blood donation camp on September 30. The Deputy Commissioner, Mr K.S. Yadav will inaugurate the camp.

Gun shop looted
An arms shop was looted by four persons who took away two pistols and a revolver at gun point. According to the police, the four men came in a Maruti car on Friday and asked the shop owner, Mr Ram Narain, to show them weapons. Then at pistol point they took the weapons and ran away.ROHTAK

Undertrial dead
An undertrial prisoner, who was under treatment at the local Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences from September 13, died on Saturday. According to information received here Satpal had been lodged in the district jail since August 14 and he was admitted to hospital for the treatment of tuberculosis.

SIRSA

Dharna
Members of the Forest Karamchari Sangh, Sirsa, led by the district president of the Sangh, Mr Raj Kumar Dhaka staged a dharna in front of District Forest Office here on Saturday. They were protesting against the illegal felling of trees at Dharampura village in Kalanwali subdivision. They demanded that the persons responsible for the act should be apprehended.

Two arrested
Two persons Devi Mehra and Billu were arrested here on Saturday for molesting a girl. In a complaint to the police Mr Ved Prakash alleged that the accused entered his house and misbehaved with his daughter, who was alone in the house. The police has registered a case under Sections 452, 354 of the IPC.

Killed by daughter
Rajinder, a tailor here was allegedly burnt to death by his step daughter here on Saturday. While talking to reporters here after sustaining serious burns, he said that his step daughter along with some of her friends allegedly sprinkled kerosene and set him on fire when he was alone in the house.

SONEPAT

NCC camp
A two-week-long training camp for NCC cadets, will be held on the premises of Hindu Girls College here from September 24 to October 5. Mr P.K. Mahapatra, Deputy Commissioner, told mediapersons here on Friday that NCC girl cadets from various educational institutions would take part in the camp.
Harassment alleged
Members of the district unit of the Non-Employed Persons' Sangh on Friday protested against the alleged harassment of educated jobless youth by officials of the District Industries Centre here as well as bankers in the city and other parts of the district. They also demanded an inquiry against the officials and bankers responsible for harassing the unemployed youth.
Plea
The district unit of the Haryana Accredited Press Reporters Union urged the state government on Friday to appoint a DPRO at Sonepat which is a fast-growing industrial city and a district headquarters.SONEPAT

Students' protest
Students of the local Chhotu Ram Arya College, boycotted classes on Saturday in response to the call of the students' wing of the Rashtriya Janata Dal to protest against the failure of college authorities to fulfil their demands. Mr Parveen, president of the party, told reporters that the main demands of the students, included the installation of a diesel generator, opening of canteen, removal of garbage and filth in and around the college and opening of a cycle stand.

Loot bid foiled
With the arrest of one person, an attempt to loot a shopkeeper in broad day light, by a group of youths, was foiled in the Gita Bhavan area here on Saturday. According to a report, a group of six or seven youths entered a shoe shop and asked the shopkeeper to show them shoes. As the shopkeeper was busy showing them varieties of shoes, some of them tried to escape with shoes. The shopkeeper raised an alarm and a number of shopkeepers assembled there. All youths barring one, fled after assaulting the shopkeeper who received minor injuries.

KANGRA

Suicide
According to the police, Naveen (20) committed suicide by consuming poison at Baijnath on Sunday. The district police chief, Mr K.C Sadiyal, said Naveen was found unconscious on the roadside and shifted to hospital by some youths where he died.

Training camp
A 12-day combined annual training camp for 750 boys and girl NCC cadets was declared open on Saturday evening at Charri village, near here. Lt Colonel G.S Rana, in charge of the camp, said 35 boys and 14 girls from senior cadets and 17 boys from junior cadets would be selected for the NCC contingent representing HP in the Republic Day parade in Delhi. The camp would conclude on September 29.

Vacant posts
The H.P Health Education and Media Personnel Association demanded on Sunday that the posts of the District Family Planning Officer, the District Mass Education Information Officer, the State Mass Education Information Officer and the State Communication Officer lying vacant should be filled immediately.
