Sanchayika day
The annual Small Saving Sanchayika (children's bank) Day was celebrated at Government Senior Secondary School, Tripuri, here on Thursday. It was presided over by Mr Kharag Singh Cheema, District Education Officer.
Term extended
The term of Dr Chandan Singh, Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Technology, has been extended for two years, a university press note said here on Thursday.
Honoured
The local Lions Club (Supreme) honoured a theatre couple, Mr Pram Sabharwal and Ms Sunita Sabharwal, and a literary activist, Mr Jagdish Chander Kumar, for their contribution to promoting literacy through theatre.
Competition
The State Bank of Patiala held a school programme at Government Primary School, Bhanari, in the district. Patriotic song competition, essay writing competition and sports competition were held.
Elected

The following have been elected office-bearers of the PWD Mulazam Dal, Punjab, here: president — Mr Inderjit Sharma; senior vice-president — Mr Vikar Singh; vice-presidents — Mr Amarjit Singh, Mr Mohan Lal and Mr Mohan Singh; and general secretaries — Mr Sushil Kumar, Mr Kulwant Singh and Mr Kirpal Singh.

Pen-down strike
Employees of the local SDM's office, Tehsildar's office, cooperative societies, BD and PO, Health Department (Ministerial staff) observed a pen-down strike for the third day on Thursday. They also held a rally.

The following have been elected office-bearers of the local unit of the Deputy Commissioner Office Employees Union: president — Mr Jagroop Singh; senior vice-president — Ms Nirpal Kaur; vice-president — Mr Sarwan Singh; general secretary — Mr Malkiat Singh; and treasurer — Mr Satpal Puri.

SANGRUR

Black day
Traders of the town on Friday observed a "black day" in protest against the alleged excesses on ''beoparis'' by officials of the Excise and Taxation Department and the police at Ludhiana and Patiala a few days back. They also presented a memorandum to the Chief Minister of Punjab.
Seminar

A seminar on diabetes will be organised by the local branch of the Indian Medical Association here on September 20, according to Dr Surinder Singla, secretary of the association. A diabetes-detection camp will be organised on the occasion.
Pension

Old-age pension for 14,000 eligible persons in the district has been sanctioned, according to Mr Anirudh Tewari, Deputy Commissioner. The eligible persons include men who were past 65 years and women who were past 60 years.

Case registered
The Chabal police has registered a case under Section 302, IPC against Nirmal Singh and three members of his family for the murder of Surjan Singh, the younger brother of Nirmal Singh. A land dispute is said to be the cause of the crime.

Appointed
Mr P.S Lamba, Senior Superintendent, Post Offices, Karnal division, has taken over as Senior Superintendent, Post Offices, Ambala division.

FATEHABAD

Unemployment allowance
The district Employment Department distributed Rs 26,350 among 158 eligible unemployed persons in August. According to the Deputy Commissioner, the department also provided jobs to persons belonging to the Scheduled Castes.
Ramlila ground

Three persons have been arrested for allegedly firing shots during a Ramlila rehearsal. According to the SP, one of the accused was involved in a legal battle with the Ramlila Committee over the Ramlila ground. The police has registered a case under Sections 285 and 506, IPC.
Complaint lodged
Sanjay and Vikas, both residents of Ladwa village in Hisar district, have been arrested on a complaint lodged by the Superintendent of DAV School examination centre. Sanjay was impersonating Vikas in the entrance test for the JBT course. A case has been registered under Sections 419 and 468, IPC.
Illegal sale
The police has arrested Suresh Kumar, a local resident, and Ashwani Kumar of Bhirdana village for the illegal sale of LPG cylinders. The police has registered a case under Sections 7, 10 and 55 of the Essential Commodities Act and arrested the accused.

Resignation
Three office-bearers of the newly formed Hansi Block Congress Committee have resigned in protest against the working of the committee. In separate statements issued here on Thursday they alleged that the committee was not formed as per the constitution of the party and they were not consulted before their appointments.
Conference
A three-day national conference of the Society of Statistics, Computers and Applications will be held at Haryana Agricultural University here from October 23 to 25.

Stabbed
A youth was stabbed by some persons at a cinema hall here on Thursday. A dispute over admission tickets was said to be the cause of the crime. The police has registered a case.
Local bus service
The Haryana Roadways has introduced a local bus service to meet the demand of local residents. Mr P.K Mahapatra, Deputy Commissioner, inaugurated the bus service here on Thursday.
Ration cards
The Haryana Khet Mazdoor Union on Friday criticised the state Government for the delay in issuing new ration cards to the people living below the poverty line in the district. According to the general secretary of the union, even the list of eligible persons has not been released.

Inquiry sought
Rattan Singh, a poor farmer of Behna Jattan village near here, has sought an impartial inquiry into the death of his son. In a memorandum to the Chief Minister, he alleged that his son, Narinder Kumar (18), had died because of neglect at the district hospital.
