AMRITSAR

Mahila bhavan
The Punjab Government has earmarked Rs. 137.23 crore for providing pension to widows, aged and handicapped persons in the current financial year. This was stated by the Minister for Social Welfare and Tourism, Ms Jagir Kaur, while laying the foundation stone of a "mahila bhavan" here being built at a cost of Rs 50 lakh.
Pensioners' camp
The Punjab Pensioners Welfare Forum at a meeting held here on Friday decided to organise a week-long pensioner's camp from the pensioners from September 13. The camp will help pensioners in filling their option forms as per revised pension rules.

FEROZEPORE

Conference held
The local office of the Iffco organised a district-level cooperative conference here on Friday to review the cooperative movement and distribution of fertilisers among farmers here. The conference was largely attended by officials of Markfed and the Cooperative Department.

MALERKOTLA

Pistol, cartridges found
The police here arrested Dalbir Khan of Malerkotla and Jagtar Singh and Karamjit Singh of Sangala village for allegedly possessing one 303 bore rifle, a desi pistol, a 12 bore pistol, and some cartridges according to the SP on Friday. The scooter on which they were going was also found to be a stolen one. A case under Section 307, IPC, has been registered.

MOGA

Arrested
The CIA staff on Friday arrested Surjeet Singh, alias Rana of Ransinhkhurd village here and Harjinder Singh and Harbans Singh of Dhab Guruke village and recovered a scooter and a van from them. The police said the accused had confessed to murdering the driver of the van.

NAWANSHAHR

Telephone problems
Telephone subscribers here face a inconvenience as the exchange malfunctions most of the time. Even the local numbers, when dialled, are hard to get. The SDO (Phones), when contacted, attributed it to the extra load on the system due to the extension of the local call facility to a number of adjoining towns.

Programme
A six-day enrichment programme for teachers of mathematics in local schools organised by the UT Education department concluded at Government Senior Secondary School, Sector 19 on Saturday. At least 27 teachers took part in it.
Seminar
LIC agents of Chandigarh, Panchkula and SAS Nagar organised a meeting-cum-seminar on the corporation's Jeevan Suraksha and Jeevan Sneha policies at Gandhi Smark Bhavan here on Saturday. It was inaugurated by Mr Janak Kumar, Divisional Manager (G&S and Pensions), who explained about Jeevan Suraksha policy's added features.

Parishad week
A nine-day 'Parishad week' celebrations being organised by the local unit of the Bharat Vikas Parishad started here on Saturday. A camp for the rehabilitation of physically handicapped children will be organised at Saket Hospital here on September 13.

AMBALA

Subsidy
The Haryana Government will give 30 per cent subsidy on the loan assistance of Rs 2400 crore received from the World Bank by the Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam (HVPN) for the reform and restructuring programme of the state power sector. This was stated by Mr Attar Singh Saini, Minister of State for Power, on Friday after inaugurating a 66 kv substation constructed by the HVPN at the industrial area.
Hurt
Constable Balwinder Singh was hurt when he was allegedly attacked by Satish Kumar, a suspect in a case, at Hotel Grace on Thursday. The constable was questioning the whereabouts of the suspect, who was staying at the hotel.

BHIWANI

Grades sought
The Nahar patwar Sangathan at a meeting held at Canal Rest House on Friday demanded the pay scales of revenue patwaris. The nahar patwaris complained that since their educational qualifications were on a par with patwaris, they should get the same scales.
Ban order
The District Magistrate has banned the sale of unhygienic food and soft drinks to check the spread of jaundice and other epidemics. Under Section 2 of the Epidemic Act, 1897, washing of clothes, bathing of animals and accumulation of garbage have also been banned. This order would be effective till December 31.
Theft
Miscreants allegedly robbed Mr Ratan Lal Gupta of cash on Thursday when he went to the local branch of the Sate Bank of India to get a draft. An FIR has been lodged.
Eye check-up camps
Six eye camps will be organised in the district under the National Blindness Removal Programme. These will be held at community health centre Kharak Kalan on September 14 and 15 community health centre Tosham, on September 15 and 16, primary health centre, Kairu, on September 17 and 18, and community health centre, Jojhu Kalan, on September 28 and 29.

Case registered
The police here has registered a case of murder and rape in connection with the death of a Dalit woman at Fazilpur village.

HISAR

Farm fair
CCS Haryana Agricultural University will hold a farmers' fair "The Farm Darshan-'98" on its campus on September 25 and 26. Dr B.L Jalali, Director of Research, said the theme of the fair would be high production with better management of inputs.
Patrol Act
Mr P.C Bidhan, District Magistrate, on Saturday passed orders under Section 3 of the Punjab Village and Small Town Patrol Act, 1918, directing all healthy male adults of all villages in the district to perform patrol duty. The order will remain in force till December 12.

Lok Adalat
The 26th Lok Adalat will be held on September 19 at the local district courts. This was stated by Mr C.R. Goel, Additional District and Sessions Judge-cum-Chairman, District Legal Services Authorities. He further said 5914 cases had been decided and compensation of Rs 1,30,39,113 had been awarded in these adalats since December, 1991.

Awarded
Three dairy science scholars have been awarded the Dr M.N. Memorial Endowment Award for 1995 for their research papers on crossbred dairy bulls. They are principal, National Dairy Research Institute, Dr P.K. Nangpaul, and his associates, Dr R. Adwani and Dr K.B. Prajapati.

Vacant posts
Five posts of lecturer in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Hindi and Sanskrit have been lying vacant for the past nine months at the newly upgraded Government Senior Secondary School, Nandrampurbas village. Moreover, some rooms in the school have also been declared unsafe by the PWD authorities.

Concern
The Sonepat Daily Railway Passengers Welfare Association on Friday expressed concern over the late running of the suburban and long-distance trains on the Delhi-Panipat section of the Northern Railways. It urged the Union Railway Minister to take note of it and punish those found guilty.
Karamchari sangh
The district unit of the Sarv Karamchari Sangh on Friday cautioned government employees against the efforts of the state government to create a rift among them in a bid to torpedo the strike on September 16. It has also decided to observe September 23 as 'Sankalp Divas'.
Protest
The Model Town Residents Welfare Association on Friday protested against the increasing lawlessness and incidence of forcible eviction of houses by a group of armed people in the area. They urged the police and the district authorities to take immediate steps to safeguard the lives and property of those living in the area.

Farming techniques
The Himachal Pradesh Education Minister, Mr Ishwar Dass Dhiman, has called upon farmers to adopt new techniques of farming to have good crops and thus improve their financial position. He was addressing a function organised by the district unit of the Gian Vigyan Samiti at Dhamrol village on Friday.

MANALI

Camp
An eight-day free eye check-up camp will be held at Raison from September 14. The camp is being organised by the District Blindness Control Society, Kulu. During the camp free eye surgeries will be conducted and medicines and spectacles will also be given free of cost.

Meeting
A meeting of the newly appointed office-bearers of the Pradesh Congress Committee will be held here on September 15.
