Office-bearers
The following have been elected office-bearers of the Ophthalmological Society, (north-zone) comprising Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab and Chandigarh: president — Dr R.K Grewal (Ludhiana); vice-president — Dr Ishwar Singh (Rohtak); general secretary — Dr P.S Sandhu (Faridkot) and treasurer — Dr S.S Soodan (Jammu).

FATEHGARH SAHIB

Eye check-up camp
Mr T.R. Sarangal, DC, inaugurated a free eye check-up camp at Bassi Pathana town on Wednesday. The camp was organised by the Rotary Club, Sirhind and the State Bank of Patiala, Bassi Pathana. This was the first camp where intra ocular lens technology was used, according to Mr P.L. Goyal, Civil Surgeon. More than 1,000 patients were examined, out of which 150 patients were operated upon.

The following have been elected office-bearers of the Romawala Cooperative Society: president — Mr Jatinder Singh Kala; and vice-president — Mr Joginder Pal.

Enrolment
As many as 699 persons have been registered in the local Employment Exchange this month, according to Mrs Usha R. Sharma, Deputy Commissioner. She said the unemployed persons on the registers of the exchange had increased to 21,845 and Rs 13,395 had been disbursed as unemployed allowance.

House burgled
Thieves entered the house of Mrs Jaswant Kaur, a resident of Alam Wala Kalan village, under Baghapurana police station, and decamped with cash and jewellery.

Sangat darshan
The Deputy Commissioner, Dr Roshan Sunkaria, while addressing a "sangat darshan" programme organised at Behram village on Tuesday to mark the 'World Literacy Day', stressed the need for linking the literacy drive with development and social awareness programmes. The DC also gave cheques for Rs 5,100 each to seven persons under the "shagun scheme".

PATHANKOT

Body found
The body of the son-in-law of Mr Sanji Ram, elder brother of Mr Mohan Lal, Forest Minister, Punjab was found near Chakki bank railway station on Tuesday. The deceased was 25 years old and was married eight months ago. The body was cremated after a post-mortem examination.

Rally
Residents of the New Mehar Singh and Mehar Singh colonies held a rally in protest against the improper water supply and sewerage in the area. Mr Jagtar Singh Rajla, local MLA announced a grant of Rs 50,000 from the district Planning Board for the development of the area.

The Universal Computers here has launched a computer literacy mission free of cost and constituted an advisory board to monitor the progress.

One killed
One person was killed and five others were injured in a head-on collision between two vehicles on the Phagwara-Jandiala road on Wednesday. The injured persons belonged to Darveshpind, Apra, Kadiana and Hadiabad villages.

Application forms
The Railway's Senior Citizens Welfare Society; Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula, has made arrangements for the free supply of application forms for pre-1986 pensioners for their notional fixation of pay and in respect of those who retired or died on or after January 1, 1986 but before January 1,1996, for updating their family pension.
Path
The Sri Ram Katha Samiti will organise a Ram Katha and Bhagwat Purana path from September 12 to 20 at the ground adjacent to the Gaundiya Math Mandir in Sector 20, a press note said on Thursday.
IT camp
The local Income Tax department will organise a camp in Burail village on Friday. To be organised as part of the "tax payers' facilitation programme", a bank counter will be set up so that the assesses could pay their tax on the spot.

Blood donation camp
The local Sathya Sai Seva Organisation is organising a blood donation camp at D.C. Model Senior Secondary School in Sector 7 on September 13.

Rafi nite
The City Culture, Chandigarh, is organising a Rafi Nite at Yavanika Open Air Theatre here on September 12. Mahesh Inder Singh along with 10 male and female singers will participate in the nite.

FATEHABAD

Cases registered
The police has registered cases of power theft under Sections 379 and 39 of the Electricity Act against Sheetal Dass and Raj Rani, residents of Indira colony, Tohana. They were found stealing power by tampering with the seals of their meters.
Open darbar
Residents of the local Basti Bhiwan, Hans colony, Appu Nagar, Thana Road and Daryapur village complained to the Deputy Commissioner at an open darbar that they were not getting sufficient water supply. They also alleged that the supplied water was contaminated.
Suicide
Phoolpati, a young married woman of Mehrana village, (Rajasthan), allegedly committed suicide along with her paramour Bhim Singh, by consuming poison on Wednesday at Daryapur village. According to the SP, both were residents of the same village and had fled from their homes on September 6.

GURGAON

Project
Mr Jagdish Yadav, State Minister for Forests and Education said the European Union had sanctioned Rs 126 crore for the Aravalli project in Gurgaon, Faridabad, Rewari and Mohindergarh districts. The project will cover 300 villages of these districts.

SIRSA

Case registered
Renu, a resident of Chautala village, succumbed to her burns here on Wednesday. She has made a dying declaration. The Mandi Dabwali police has registered a case under Sections 304-B and 498-A, IPC, against Ramesh Kumar, her husband.

Died
Pawan Kumar of Aluha village, who was a class X student, died under mysterious circumstances at his village on Thursday. A case has been registered.

KULU

Cases settled
Nearly 24 cases were settled at the "prashashan janta ke dwar par" programme on Wednesday at Gadsa. The Additional District Magistrate presided over the programme. The pending cases were referred to the department concerned.
Urged
The Agriculture Employees Federation has condemned the HRTC authorities for withdrawing the Kulu-Kotli bus service. Mr K.R. Kanudal, senior vice-president of the federation, said the bus had been operating on the route for the past 18 years and no other bus service plied on this route.
