Seminar
A seminar on drug abuse was organised for students at the local Alexandra Girls School. The regional coordinator of Socio-Economic Development, Mr Daniel B. Das, highlighted the effects of alcohol and drugs on students.

Function
The annual function of the Nishkam Seva Samiti was organised at the local Civil Hospital on Sunday. Mr Sharvan Kumar, head of the Ludhiana unit-of the samiti, urged people to pledge to donate their eyes.

FEROZEPORE

Medical camp
Kribhco organised at medical check-up camp for cattle at Nurpur Sethan village on Monday. As many as 227 head of cattle were examined and 50 dogs vaccinated against rabies. Dr Vinod Gupta, Deputy Director, Animal Husbandry, was also present.

LUDHIANA

Kisan melas
Punjab Agricultural University has announced the dates for holding kisan melas in the state. According to Dr Jaspinder Singh Kolar, Director of Extension (Education), PAU, the mela will be held on PAU campus on September 17 and 18. The mela at Regional Centre, Ballowal Saunkhri in Nawanshahr district will be held on October 14.

Dharna
Fortyone activists of the district unit of the CPI staged a dharna in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner here on Monday to press for their demands which included the withdrawal of the recent hike in bus fares and power tariff.

Hindi divas
The Languages Department, Punjab, will organise Hindi divas at Kamla Nehru Women’s College, Phagwara, on September 14. Mr Madan Lal Hasija, Director of the department, said here on Monday that many eminent Hindi poets would participate.

The local Lions Club (Citizen) organised a vanamahotsava in Saket Hospital here, according to Col G.B. Singh (retd), president of the club, on Monday.

Fuel conservation
The Petroleum Conservation Research Association (PCRA) and associations of Baddi, Barotiwala and Nalagarh organised a fuel conservation meet at Baddi on Tuesaday. The president of the association, Mr A.R. Singh, exhorted industrialists to adopt energy efficient methods and technologies so that products remained competitive in the international market. The Chief Regional Coordinator of the northern region, of the PCRA, Mr U.P. Singh, highlighted the association's efforts towards petroleum conservation.

Lok adalat
The lok adalat on Monday awarded a compensation of Rs 33.43 lakh to 65 persons while disposing of claims pending with the Motor Accidents Tribunal. The adalat also settled 184 civil suits, 34 criminal cases and 102 summary cases.

Case registered
The police has registered a case under Sections 409 and 420, IPC, against Mr Ugarsain, Headmaster, Government Primary School, Khaisher, for allegedly embezzling 21 quintals of wheat meant for distribution among students of the school.

Visited
The Ambassador of Vietnam in India, Mr Pham Sy Tam, was given a warm welcome by members of the Indo-Vietnam Friendship Society, Haryana, when he arrived at Kundli village on Sunday. He visited industrial units at Kundli, Murthal and Jahri and participated in a function organised at Rishikul Vidyapeeth, near here.

Bus accident
Yaspal (22) of Churpur village was killed and 19 others were injured when a bus in which they were travelling overturned. Members of the Bharat Vikas Parishad, Jagadhri, reached the scene and took the injured to the Civil Hosiptal, Jagadhri.
