LUDHIANA

Celebrations
The LIC here celebrated "Insurance Week" from September 1 to 7 as part of its 42nd anniversary celebrations. The divisional and the branch offices held painting and essay competitions and a free medical check-up camp during the week.

MOGA

Purchase centres
Nearly 51 purchase centres for paddy procurement have been set up in the district, according to the Deputy Commissioner here on Sunday. He said all arrangements had been made for paddy procurement in the district.

Competitions
DAV Public School and Vir Haqiqat Rai School secured top positions by winning four awards each at the district-level Punjabi and Hindi competitions organised by the Punjab Languages Department. Government Girls Multi Purpose School and Sunflower School also won two awards each.

Installed
Mrs Saroj Pabbi and Mrs Palwinder Sohal have been installed president and secretary, respectively, of the local Inner Wheel Club.
Scheme starts
Mr S.S. Dhure, Assistant Excise and Taxation Commissioner, Kapurthala on Sunday stated that the summary assessment scheme for sales up to Rs 20 lakh had started. Persons concerned could apply by September 30 for the year 1996-97 and by October 30 for 1997-98.

Suspension
Hardev Singh, executive officer, Nagar Parishad, has been suspended on a charge of irregularities. Mr R.D. Sharma, executive officer, Nagar Panchayat, Goraya, has been given additional charge of Phillaur.
Injured
More than 20 armed miscreants allegedly attacked a dhaba located between Goraya and Phillaur on the GT Road on Sunday and injured its owner, Mr Prithipal Singh, and his wife, Baksho. A case has been registered.

SANGRUR

Arrested
The Dhuri police has arrested three proclaimed offenders after combing operations, according to the district police chief. Among the arrested is a woman who was wanted by the Sadar police station, Hoshiarpur, since 1985. The other two had absconded in 1993 and 1997.top

Dasehra committee
The following have been elected office-bearers of the Sector 46 Shri Sanatan Dharam Dasehra Committee: president — Mr Narinder Bhatia; general secretary — Mr Sushil Sovat; vice-presidents — Mr Sukhvinder Singh and Mr Rajesh Raja; and joint secretary — Mr Sudhir Verma.
Nominated
Mr Gajendra Sharma has been nominated member of the national executive of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha. A member of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad for over 10 years. Mr Sharma has also been the member of the executive of the local unit of the yuva morcha.
Condemned
A section of the Government Teachers Union at a meeting here on Monday condemned the role played by a few leaders of the union in negotiating with representatives of the Chandigarh Administration on the issue of the suspension of three teachers in the Pinky suicide case.
Treasurer
The Chairman of the local Consumer Forum, Mr Jaidev Singh, has been nominated treasurer of the Consumer Coordination Council, New Delhi, according to a forum press note issued here on Monday.
Exhibition
A 10-day long exhibition of handicrafts and handloom artefacts, organised by the Pramparik Hasatkala Parisangh, Delhi, concluded at the Lajpat Rai Bhavan here on Wednesday. The aim of the exhibition was to promote awareness among people regarding their heritage.

PANCHKULA

Five booked
The local police has booked five persons under the Excise Act for allegedly drinking at a public place. According to the police, Shamsher Singh, Jiapal, Satinder Pal, Sanjeev Kumar and Subash Chander were caught while drinking in front of a liquor vend at Old Panchkula.
Stolen goods recovered
The CIA staff of the district police has recovered stolen cloth and pottery sets from two persons — Madan Lal and Sadhu Ram. According to the police, the goods were worth Rs 7000.
Punsup exam
Candidates appearing for a written test for the inspector (grades I and II) in Punsup have claimed that the dates of their examination clash with those of a test in the Punjab School Education Board, scheduled to be held on September 13. They have appealed to the Punsup authorities to postpone the date.

Killed
Guddu of Jamalpur village was killed on the spot when a Canter overturned near Bhattu village on Sunday. In another incident, Anil Kumar (20) died when a scooter hit him near the Canal Colony gate here.
Suicide cases
Rajender Singh(40) allegedly committed suicide on Sunday by setting himself on fire at Chowdhariwal village. In another incident Vijay Singh (18) committed suicide by consuming poison at the local Dayanand Colony on Sunday.

Suicide
Rajinder Kaur (34) of Dhani Pratap Nagar near Amritsar Kalan village in Ellenabad subdivision allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison at her house on Sunday. A case under Sections 308, 201 and 34 of the IPC against her husband Teja Singh, and father-in-law Sadhu Singh has been registered.
Killed
Babhu Ram (30), a servant of Sukhminder Singh of Bhangu village, was killed when the scooter he was riding collided with a truck on the GT Road here on Sunday.
Woman commits suicide

Indro Devi (30) of Hanjira village in the district allegedly committed suicide by setting herself on fire at her house in Bhangu village on Sunday when she was alone. According to sources, she was suffering from depression for the past several months.
Body found
The Kalanwali police recovered a decomposed body of a Bihari youth which had some injury marks from a house at Model Town, Kalanwali, on Sunday. According to sources, the deceased was living in this house and had been working as a labourer here. All other persons living with him had left the house 10 days back.

Power crisis
A deputation of the Democratic Youth Organisation and residents of Bhatgaon village called on the Superintending Engineer of the HSEB here on Saturday and protested against the continuous power crisis in the area. They alleged that the non-functioning of the power substation was the main cause of the problem. top

KASAULI

Liquor seized
The Solan police on Friday seized 66 bottles of country-made foreign liquor from the store of a vegetable vendor, Vimal Kumar, near Shoolini temple. The district police chief, Mr M.L. Negi, said a CIA party conducted the raid following a tip-off. A case has been registered under the Excise Act.

NAHAN

Taxi owners
Resentment prevails among local taxi owners and drivers against the alleged failure of the district administration to check the plying of privately-owned vehicles as taxis without paying any taxes. The taxi owners complained that as a result they were unable to pay their loan instalments to the banks.

SUNDERNAGAR

Seized
The police here seized 52 scants, worth Rs 60,000, in two different raids on Saturday at Kayan village, 25 km from here. Two cases under Sections 32 and 33 of the Indian Forest Act and under Section 379 of the IPC have been registered.
