FARIDKOT

Ban imposed
Mr Gurinder Singh Grewal, District Magistrate, has banned the sale and carrying of sharp-edged weapons in the district with immediate effect.

JALANDHAR

Condemned
The Pastorate Committee, Circle Church, Jalandhar Cantt, on Tuesday condemned the alleged manhandling of the Rt. Rev. Joel V. Mal, the bishop of church of North India, by the police at Ludhiana. Mr Wilson Franklin, secretary of the committee, demanded a public apology by the police officials involved in the incident.

PATIALA

Eye camp
The Ghanyia Ji Foundation and the Guru Arjan Kirtan Mandal will organise a free eye-operation camp at Amar Ashram on September 6. The ashram will provide free meals, medicines and spectacles to patients on the occasion.

Elected
The following have been elected office-bearers of the local Kennel Club for the year 1998-99: chairman – Capt Reet M.P. Singh; president – Mr Vijay Singh; secretary-general – Mr G.P.S. Brar; and finance secretary – Mr Vinod Pathak.
Welfare society

Awarded

Prof Dalip Singh, former Dean of Arts and Social Sciences and head of the Department of Political Science, Punjabi University, has been awarded emeritus fellowship by the UGC.

PHAGWARA

Complaint letter boxes
The Punjab Government has instructed all nagar councils and improvement trust offices to set up complaint letter boxes in their respective offices. This was stated here on Wednesday by Local Bodies Minister Balramji Dass Tandon. He said the complainants would get replies at their residential address.

SANGRUR

Ban orders
The District Magistrate, Mr Anirudh Tiwari, has banned the taking out of all kinds of processions, assembly of five or more persons, raising of slogans and carrying of all kinds of weapons at public places within the limits of the district with immediate effect. The orders will remain in force till October 15.
Arrested
The CIA staff here has arrested Dharamvir and recovered from his possession two stolen scooters. This has been stated by Mr Arpit Shukla, district police chief.

TARN TARAN

Suicide case
Harjinder Singh (26), a Punjab Police constable and a resident of the local Muradpur Colony, allegedly committed suicide by strangling himself here on Tuesday. Mr Darbara Singh, father of the deceased, has lodged an FIR in the local city police station. The police has registered a case under Section 306 of the IPC.

Elections
The election of the Manimajra Cooperative Marketing- cum-Processing Society will be held at the Sector 26 Grain Market on October 9. Nomination papers can be filed on September 25 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. while the scrutiny of the papers will be conducted on September 28. The nomination papers can be withdrawn on September 30, according to the manager of the society.
Medical association
The following have been elected office-bearers of the district unit of the National Integrated Medical Association: patrons Dr Naresh Mittal and Dr Suresh Jain; president Dr Rajesh K. Centre for women
To provide creative ability and financial security to non-working women, a handicraft centre named Woman Entrepreneurship Block has been opened at D.C. Model School in Sector 7 here. The founder of the centre said the centre would provide training to housewives and school students. An exhibition of handicrafts has been opened at the centre.

Booked
The Mahesh Nagar police has booked Sohan Lal, a resident of Brahmanmajra village, for allegedly raping a married woman of the same village. A case under Section 376 of the IPC has been registered against him.

BHIWANI

Lok adalat
A permanent lok adalat has been constituted here. Mr M.L.Sharma, Additional District and Sessions Judge — I, and Mr R.S. Bagri, Civil Judge (Sr. Divn), have been designated as the judges for the adalat.
Dharna

Employees of the Raman Nursing Home here staged a day-long dharna at mini-secretariat on Wednesday to seek justice in the Dr Raman murder case. Dr Laj, widow of the slain doctor, criticised the slow pace of the investigation into the case.

A group of four youths who began padyatra from Sabarmati in Gujarat to Delhi reached here on Wednesday. The four youths are Kuldeep Sharma, Rajesh Sharma, Ramesh Chauhan and Satish Makkad. The group began padyatra on July 2.

ROHTAK

Demand
The district unit of the Indian National Lok Dal has demanded removal of Town and Country Planning Minister Seth Sri Kishan Dass from the cabinet in view of the order of a local court in connection with a land grabbing case. Mr Satish Bandhu, a local Lok Dal leader, also sought a high-level probe into the transfer of certain district officials.
Case registered
The police here has registered a case against some members of a family of Pakasma village, near here, in connection with the death of a married woman recently. According to reports the victim, Rajwanti, of Gugaheri village, who had been married to a resident of the village, committed suicide under mysterious conditions on July 21. The family members of the deceased alleged that the woman committed suicide due to harassment by her in-laws. A case under Sections 496 and 306 of the IPC has been registered against the husband and three other members of the family.

SIRSA

Two arrested
Ramesh and Ravi of Kalanwali town in the district were arrested by the police on Wednesday for allegedly raping a girl in Kalanwali, about 40 km from here, on Wednesday. The police has registered a case against the two men.
Electrocuted

Jagsir Singh (28), a mason, was electrocuted at Mandi Dabwali, about 60 km from here, on Wednesday. According to sources, Jagsir was working at a house at Bararu Street when the incident took place.
Injured

Chint Kaur (65) and her son Tara Singh (32) of Dadu village in the district were seriously injured when they were allegedly attacked with sharp-edged weapons by Kaka Singh and his brother on Wednesday. The injured have been hospitalised. According to sources, Kaka Singh had been allegedly harassing a female relative Mrs of Chint Kaur, who naturally objected to the misconduct of Kaka Singh. As a result the latter along with his brother attacked the woman and her son.

SONEPAT

Probe demanded
Representatives of various farmers' organisations on Wednesday demanded a high-level probe into the alleged misutilisation of public funds allotted for the construction of division No. 28 for the lining of canals, construction of bridges and other irrigation schemes. In a memorandum sent to Chief Minister Bansi Lal they alleged that the bulk of the allotted funds had been pocketed by certain officials in the absence of any checking by the higher authorities of the department.
Clash

Some students were injured at the railway station here on Wednesday when two groups of students clashed. A small posse of the railway police arrived on the spot after the clash and took some students in custody. No arrest has, however, been made.

YAMUNANAGAR

Gang busted
The police has busted a gang involved in the smuggling of cows from Haryana to Uttar Pradesh for slaughtering purpose. Mr Sheel Madhur, Superintendent of Police, said here on Wednesday that the Jagadhri sadar police had impounded a truck which was carrying eight cows to Uttar Pradesh. Three accused — Khanil, Liquat Ali and Rasheed Khan — fled from the scene, he added.top

Dasehra committee
A new Kulu Dasehra committee has been constituted by the state government. Mr Maheshwar Singh, a Member of the Lok Sabha, has been nominated chairman of the committee. The 31-member committee has two non-official members.

SOLAN

Police drive
Superintendent of Police M.L. Negi on Wednesday said that the special drive launched to curb bootlegging in the district during the past two months had resulted in a seizure of 10 lakh millilitres of Indian Made Foreign Liquor and 20 lakh millilitres of country liquor. He said 67 cases had been registered under the Excise Act and 77 persons involved in liquor smuggling had been arrested during the drive.top
