AMRITSAR
Sammelan: The Arya Pradeshik Pratinidhi Upsabha will organise a "ved parchar" sammelan on Saturday. Discourses on the ideals of Swami Dayanand Maharishi and the principles of Arya Samaj will be held.
Allegation: Bhai Kanwer Singhdhami, Vice-President of the SAD, addressing a press conference on Tuesday alleged that the police had been harassing party workers. He said he had lodged a complaint with the manager of the Golden Temple but no action had been taken so far.

Patarkar parishad: The following have been elected Presidents of the Punjab Chandigarh Patarkar Parishad units: Kuldeep Singh Chatrana (Amloh subdivision), H.S. Gautam (Bassi Pathana), Sanjeev Sharma (Khamanon) and Subhash Gajri (Fatehgarh Sahib).

KAPURTHALA
Lok Adalat: Mr Justice H.S. Brar of the Punjab and Haryana High Court will inaugurate the permanent Lok Adalat in the district courts complex on Saturday. Mr Justice N.K. Agrawal will preside.

LUDHIANA
Sanitation campaign: The Punjab Minister for Local Bodies, Mr Balramji Dass Tandon, will launch a fortnight-long sanitation drive in the city on Sunday.
Youth festival: Punjab Agricultural University will organise a north zone inter-varsity youth festival on its campus from November 27 to December 1. According to Dr M.S. Bajwa, Director, Students Welfare, more than 1000 students and officials from 50 universities are likely to participate.

NAWANSHAHR
Foundation stone: The Technical Education and Industrial Training Minister, Dr Upinderjit Kaur, laid the foundation stone of a government middle school at Mahadipur village on Thursday. She said work on a polytechnic institute at Chokeran village would be started in the next financial year.

PATIALA
Engineers' association: The following have been elected office-bearers of the local Diploma Engineers Association (Public Health Punjab): President — Mr Pritam Singh; senior Vice-President — Mr Mehar Singh; Vice-President — Mr Rajinder Singh Sehgal; General Secretary — Mr Gurcharan Singh; and Finance Secretary — Mr Suresh Aggarwal.
16 cases settled: The District Legal Service Authority has settled 16 cases in permanent Lok Adalats held at the district and sessions court here in August. Stating this at a meeting here on Wednesday, Mr K.S. Grewal, District and Sessions Judge, said over Rs 1 lakh was given as compensation in motor accident claim cases. Fiftyeight applicants were given free legal service.

MANSA
Award conferred: Mrs Parminder Kaur Kranti has won the Teja Singh award for 1998 for her book, "Kathan Kosh". The award, conferred by the Language Department, Punjab, carries a cash component of Rs 5,000.

SANGRUR
CM's visit: Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Friday visited Mastuana, near here, to participate in a religious function.
Conference postponed: The two-day conference of the All-India Gramin Bank Employees Association to be held here on Saturday has been postponed. According to a spokesman for the association, it will now be held on November 7.

KURUKSHETRA
Dental week: Clothes and 26 pairs of shoes were distributed among lepers by the Lions Club (Golden Heart) here on Thursday. A free dental service week will be organised from November 1, according to the Vice-President of the club.

FATEHABAD
Power theft: The police has registered two cases of power theft following a complaint by the Vidyut Prasaran Nigam. According to the SP, Mohan Singh of Ahlisadar village was arrested under Sections 379 and 39 of the Electricity Act. A case has also been registered against Vijay Kumar of Bhattu Kalan.

HISAR
Society of statistics: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Indian Society of Statistics and Computer Applications: President — Dr M.N. Das; Secretary — Prof L.S. Kaushik; Vice-Presidents — Dr S.D. Sharma and Prof Raj Pal; Joint Secretary — Dr L. Lahri; and Treasurer — Dr D. Roy Chaudhary.
International conference: A four-day international conference on food security and crop science will be held at Haryana Agricultural University from November 3. As many as 45 experts from 18 countries, besides 250 delegates from all over the country will participate. Dr Mangla Rai, Deputy Director General (crop science) of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, will inaugurate the conference.

PANIPAT
Open darbar: A block-level open darbar was held at Samalkha, 16 km from here, on Wednesday under the chairmanship of Mr A.K. Singh, Additional Deputy Commissioner. As many as 200 complaints were received.
Power connections: The city division of the Haryana Vidyut Parsaran Nigam Limited provided 181 new power connections, including 174 general, five industrial and two tubewell connections, last month, according to Mr Anurag Rastogi, Deputy Commissioner.

REWARI
Awareness camp: As many as 40 senior-level functionaries of various government departments and voluntary organisations participated in a training and awareness camp on natural disaster management which concluded here on Wednesday. The two-day camp was organised by the Janata Kalyan Samiti and sponsored by the Union Ministry of Agriculture.

SIRSA
Jeeps impounded: Mr B.S. Sandhu, SSP, said here on Friday that the police had launched a special campaign against unauthorised vehicles plying on roads and transporting passengers without permit. He said 23 such jeeps were impounded on the Ellenabad-Sirsa road on Thursday.
Abducted: A girl belonging to Ellenabad was reportedly abducted by a youth of Rania Chungi on Thursday. In a complaint to the police, the father of the girl alleged that his daughter had been abducted by their tenant. A case has been registered.
Dowry harassment: A case under Sections 498A, 406 and 341, IPC, was registered against Sandeep and his relatives of the Goshalla mohalla on Thursday following a complaint by Asha Rani who alleged that she was harassed and beaten up for more dowry.
Held: Prabha of Delhi and Seema of Uttar Pradesh, alleged members of an inter-state gang of cheats, were handed over to the police while trying to defraud a woman of her jewellery on Thursday.

SONEPAT
Workers' sammelan: The Haryana Yuva Janata Dal will organise a workers' sammelan at Kamboj dharamshala in Karnal on Sunday. Mr Ved Parkash Vidrohi, President of the Haryana Pradesh Janata Dal told mediapersons here on Friday that Mr Bala Subramanium, national President of the All-India Yuva Janata Dal, will address the sammelan.
Haryana day: The Samajik Ekta Party will celebrate Haryana Day on Sunday.

KULU
Road repair: SSB jawans of the battalion camping at Shamshi started a four-day operation to repair roads in the cloudburst-hit Benchi panchayat of this district on Tuesday. Mr A.R. Thakur, Commandant of the unit, the flash-floods had affected 10 villages.

NAHAN
Banned: District Magistrate Rakesh Kaushal has banned the carrying of explosive material within the limits of Dadahu and Khalla Kiar panchayat areas during the state-level Renuka fair. The order, which was issued on Thursday will remain in force till November 5.
