Punjab Briefs
AMRITSAR
Media director:
Mr Harbir Singh Bhanwar, a journalist, was appointed Media Director, Public Relations, by the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee here on Wednesday. He retired in September as senior staff correspondent of The Tribune.
Dharna:
Teachers of three Kendriya Vidyalayas here have started a one-hour dharna in their respective schools which will be held everyday till the middle of November. The main demands include grant of the senior scale of Rs 5,500 and the selection grade of Rs 6,500 to primary teachers, redesignation of graduate teachers as lecturers and raising the retirement age of teachers to 62 years.

GURDASPUR
Mahila morcha:
A meeting of the district unit of the BJP Mahila Morcha was held here on Wednesday under the chairmanship of its President, Mrs Raj Rani. The members unanimously resolved to urge the Punjab BJP President, Mr Daya Singh Sodhi, MP, to reinstate Mr Ravi Gupta as President of the district BJP unit.

NANGAL
NCC camp:
A 10-day combined annual training camp of the NCC is in progress at Kila Anandgarh. Cadets selected at this camp will be sent to the Republic Day camp. Lt Col O.S. Kaushal inaugurated the camp.
Song competition:
The Bharat Vikas Parishad organised a group song competition here in which children from various local schools participated. The competition was won by Government Girls Senior Secondary School in the junior category and by Nehru Memorial College in the senior category.

NAWANSHAHR
Single window system:
Mr Ranjit Singh Talwandi, Chairman, Punjab Small Industries and Export Corporation, on Tuesday visited the local industrial focal point and heard the grievances of the industrialists. He said a "single window system" had been introduced to mitigate the problems of the industrialists.
Lions Club:
The following have been elected office-bearers of the local Lions Club : President — Mr Iqbal Singh; Senior Vice-President — Mr Parminder Singh Parhar; Secretary — Dr Rajinder Karwal; and Treasurer — Mr Yash Vij.

PATIALA
Exhibition:
Government Senior Secondary School, Dhundial Khalsa here and Government Senior Secondary School, Ghanaur, have won the overall trophies in urban and rural sections at the district-level science exhibition which concluded at Government Girls Senior Secondary School here.
Assured:
Mr Jagtar Singh Rajla, MLA from Samana, has assured residents of Harbans Theatre Lane here, that a new road connecting Rajbaha Road and Sewak colony would be constructed with proper sewerage system.
Elected:
The following have been elected office-bearers of the Association of Representatives (Labour Court) here: President — Mr Prem Chand; Senior Vice-President — Mr Balbir Singh; Vice-President — Mr R.P. Singh; and General Secretary — Mr S.M. Sood.

FEROZEPORE
Expedition: A cycle expedition comprising one JCO and 10 jawans was flagged off from here on Wednesday by Maj-Gen KC Padha, VSM, GOC, golden Arrow Division. The expedition being undertaken by Fourth Battalion of the Sikh Light Infantry, will pass through Faridkot, Bathinda, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Pathankot and Amritsar.

PHAGWARA
Railway station:
The Northern Railways have downgraded three railway stations — Jejon Doaba, Saila Khurd and Garhshankar — on the Jalandhar-Jejon rail section from B-grade to flag stations. According to railway sources here on Thursday a decrease in passengers was said to be the cause.

SANGRUR
Banned: Mr Anirudh Tewari, District Magistrate, has banned the taking out of all kinds of processions, (except marriage and funeral procession), assembly of five or more persons, raising of slogans and carrying or display of all kinds of weapons at public places within the district limits. These orders will remain effective till December 14.

Baking contest: Ms Jatinder Kaur won the first prize in a baking contest on the valedictory function of a workshop organised by the Food Crafts Institute here on Thursday. Ms Gurinder Kaur stood second. The third place was shared by Ms Anita Karvinkop and Ms Umangdeep Kaur.

PANCHKULA
Elected: Mr Randhir Singh Malik has been elected president of the district youth wing of the Indian National Lok Dal.
Nominated: Mr Vijay Bansal, has been nominated general secretary of the All-India Yuva Aggarwal Sammelan.
Residents’ plea: Local residents have sought more telephone bill collection centres at the Telegraph office in Sector 8 here. In a joint statement they said consumers had to wait for long hours to submit the bills. Moreover, the payment for the bills was not accepted through cheque, they said.

FARIDABAD
Centre opened:
A multimedia centre for students of primary classes was inaugurated at DAV Public School here on Wednesday. It is claimed to be the first of its kind in the state.

FATEHABAD
Arrested:
The police here has arrested two persons in connection with a clash between two rival groups on October 21. A knife used in the clash was also recovered. Avinash, who was injured in the clash, said in his FIR that a group of eight persons had attacked and injured him when he refused to meet their demand for money. A case has been registered under Sections 323, 148, 149, 506 and 342, IPC.
Youth festival:
The District Sports and Youth Welfare Department will organise a "District Youth Festival" at the local Manohar Memorial College on November 3 and 4.

Association:

ROHTAK
Killed:
One person was killed on the spot when a Tata 407 crashed into a tree near Bahu Akbarpur village on the Rohtak-Hisar road on Wednesday. The deceased has been identified as Sandip of Mokhra village in Meham subdivision.
Raped: A married woman was allegedly raped at Bakheta village in the district on Tuesday. According to a report lodged with the police, the woman was raped when she was going alone in the fields. A case under Section 376, IPC, has been registered. Meanwhile, in another case on Wednesday two scooter-borne men snatched a gold chain from Alka, a resident of Jagdish colony here.
Pipeline: The water supply here was disrupted on Tuesday due to some damage in the main supply line near the Red Cross chowk here. The authorities concerned said the work to restore the supply was going on and the pipe was likely to be repaired soon.

Boy dies:
Devinder Singh (4) was killed when he was hit by a taxi near Sunehat village on Wednesday when he was returning from school. A case has been registered.

HAMIRPUR

Appointed:

NAHAN
NDPS Act: Dullo Ram of Naini Dhar village in Shillai tehsil of the district was arrested for allegedly possessing 5 kg of charas. He was travelling in a bus from Shillai to Paonta Sahib when he was arrested. A case under the Narotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act has been registered.
