GURDASPUR

Burn injuries: Neena, a school teacher in a private school at Nabipur, 3 km from here, allegedly sprinkled kerosene on her body and set herself on fire. She was admitted to the local Civil Hospital with more than 90 per cent burns along with her 11-month-old daughter who was also injured. Her husband who is physically handicapped also received burns.

JALALABAD

Bridge: A pontoon bridge has been constructed by the Army over the Sutlej river near Mahatam Nagar village, 25 km from here. This has proved very useful for residents of the trans-Sutlej areas who found it difficult to reach the market for selling their harvest.

JALANDHAR

Arrested: Surinder Pal Singh, a Sub-Inspector posted at Garhshankar Hoshiarpur district, was arrested on Saturday for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 2000 from Mr Satpal of Tanda, Hoshiarpur district. The accused was caught redhanded by Mr Jaipal Singh, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Vigilance Department. An FIR has been registered under Sections 7, 13 and 88.

LUDHIANA

Convention: The annual convention of Guru Gobind Singh Study Circle was held here on Sunday. Dr G.S. Kalkat, Vice-Chancellor of Punjab Agriculture University, said that an increase in the level of education and prohibition of drugs and liquor consumption in the state would lead to progress in the social, cultural and economic life of the people.

MOGA

Body found: The body of an employee of a wine contractor, Gurmeet Singh, has been found by the Baghapurana police on the Baghapurana-Kaleke road here. According to a report, the body bore head injuries. It has been sent for a post-mortem examination.

PATIALA

Promoted: Dr Balbir Singh Babbar, MD, Medicine Chest and Cardiology, has been promoted Professor of Medicine at Government Rajindra Hospital here by the Punjab Government.

ROPAR

Piles camp: A piles operation camp was organised by the local unit of Bharat Vikas Parishad on Sunday. Nearly 63 patients were operated upon free of cost. Another camp will be held here on November 15.

SAMRALA

Telephones: Telephones in Mutton village have not been functioning for the past three months, according to Mr Hinder Singh Mutton, a social worker of the village. The local telecom authorities had been approached but no action was taken, he added.
Nominated: Mr Gurcharan Singh Mithewal has been nominated as Chairman of the Market Committee, Machhiwara, and Mr Gurcharan Singh, sarpanch of Jionewal village as Vice-Chairman by the Punjab Government.

TARN TARAN

Bribe: Harbhajan Singh, a clerk at the SDM's office, Khadoor Sahib, was caught red-handed by a team of the Vigilance Department on Saturday while accepting a bribe of Rs 1000 from Dilbagh Singh of Mundapind Kaura Vidhan. A case has been registered under the Corruption Act.
Dowry case: The police on Sunday registered a case under Sections 498A and 406, IPC, on a complaint by Ms Palwindrerjit Kaur, a local resident, who was married to Lakhwinder Singh of Amritsar. She alleged that she was being harassed by her in-laws, including her husband, for dowry.
Killed: Baljinder Singh (24), an Army jawan of Rattoke village near Chohla Sahib, was killed in an accident near Thattian Mahantan village on Saturday. He was going to his village on a scooter when he was hit by a bus coming from the opposite direction. A case has been registered.

AMBALA

Office-bearers: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Ambala City unit of the BJP: President — Mr Subhash Aggarwal; Vice-Presidents — Mr Satpal Mango and Mrs Aruna Mehta; General Secretary — Mr Mangal Sobti; and Treasurer — Mr Ramesh Sehgal.
Gyan Bharti award: Dr Pranab Pandya of the Gayatri Parivar, who had been awarded the Hindu award in the USA recently, would be given the Gyan Bharti award at a function to be held at the cantonment here on November 4. Swami Avdeshanand, who announced this here on Sunday, said Dr Pandya would be honoured for his efforts to maintain India's cultural heritage.

Youth festival: Government College, Malerkotla, would hold a three-day Punjabi University (Sangrur zone) Youth Festival from December 11 to 13. This decision was taken on Saturday at a meeting of principals and their representatives of the Sangrur zone which was presided over by Mr Daljit Singh, Director of Youth Welfare Services Department, Punjabi University, Patiala.

BHIWANI

Amenities: The Haryana Pragativadi Yuva Parishad staged a dharna on Sunday against the apathetic attitude of the local Municipal Council and the administration regarding the deteriorating basic amenities. Mr Shankar Dass Sharma, president of the parishad and a Congress leader, said this was despite the fact that the city was the hometown of the Chief Minister.
Camp: A blood donation camp was organised by the local unit of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) at Civil Hospital here on Sunday. Dr K.K. Garg, Chief Medical Officer, inaugurated the camp.

GURGAON

Suicide: Yogeshwar Dheer, a third-year student of a local engineering college, allegedly committed suicide by drinking insecticide. A case has been registered.
Committee formed: Mr Suraj Pal Singh, Revenue Minister, Haryana, said a five-member committee had been formed under Mr Maniram Godara, Home Minister, Haryana, to review the boundaries of subdivisions, tehsils and police stations of the state. These boundaries would be fixed again to provide better services to the people of the state, he added.

ROHTAK

Award: Arun Deswal, a plus-one student of Pathania Public School here, has been selected for the National Bal Shree award for creative writing for 1998. The award instituted by the National Bal Bhavan, Delhi will be given during the National Children Assembly to be organised from November 14 to 20 at New Delhi.
Cinema tickets: Students of Maharshi Dayanand University and its affiliated colleges have demanded a reduction in the ticket charges of the local cinema theatres with a special concession for the students. In a memorandum submitted to the district authorities these students alleged that the prices of cinema tickets here were the most expensive as compared to other districts.

SONEPAT

Case hearing: The Civil Judge (senior division) here has fixed December 7 for hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by GT Road Industries Association against the authorities of the Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam and the local Telecommunication Department.
Substandard: A sample of sarson oil, seized by officials of the Health Department from Ajay Oil Mills here has been declared substandard after an analysis by the state laboratory. The officials of the department have lodged a complaint with the police for taking further action against the owner of the mill.
Eye camp: Atlas Cycle Industries, here will organise a free eye operation camp here on November 3. Dr B.N. Khanna will perform the operations.

BILASPUR

Water schemes: The Himachal Pradesh Government had spent Rs 7.17 crore in the current financial year to provide drinking water to 480 villages through 130 water-supply schemes. This was stated by Mr J.P. Nadda, Health Minister, at the inauguration of a Rs 26.51 lakh Bhatoli-Malayawar water supply scheme at Malayawar, 35 km from here on Saturday.
Cases settled: A Lok Adalat was held here on Saturday in which 76 out of 94 cases were disposed of. Mr L.N. Sharma, District and Sessions Judge, presided over the adalat.
Completion of bridge: The Minister of State for Cooperatives, Himachal Pradesh, Mr Rikhi Ram Kondal, said on Saturday that the bridges at Mandwan would be ready by the end of this year. He was addressing a meeting in Gujrehada village, 70 km from here.
Highway: Mr Suresh Chandel, state President, BJP and Member of Parliament from Hamirpur constituency, had urged the Central Surface Transport Minister, Mr Devender Pradhan, to provide funds for constructing a 20-km long alternate highway from Suharghat to Raghunathpura via Kurighat. This would ease the traffic rush on National Highway 21, which usually remained blocked due to repeated landslides.

JWALAMUKHI

Drowned: Jitender Kumar (19) of Jalandhar was drowned in Beas river near here on Monday. The body has not been recovered. A case has been registered.
Elected: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Himachal Pradesh Civil Supply State Cooperative Union, Kangra: president — Mr Narender Sood, senior vice-presidents — Mr Prakash Chand, Mr Mulkhraj Choudhary and Mr Janak Singh Chambyal; secretary — Mr Sanjay Gupta; and treasurer — Mr Ramesh Chaudhary.

NAHAN

Suicide committed: Ram Chandran (57), an employee of the Nahan foundry, allegedly committed suicide at his residence here on Sunday by hanging himself from a ceiling fan. A case has been registered.

SHIMLA

Freedom struggle: Prof S. Settar Chairman of the India Council of Historical Research, has emphasised the need for collecting more information about the Indian freedom struggle. He was speaking at a lecture organised by the History Department of Himachal Pradesh University.top
