Cops surrender
NEW DELHI, Oct 24 (PTI) — Seven police personnel, accused in a murder case in December, 1992, in North Delhi, surrendered before a city court here today. According to the CBI, the accused, while being posted at Samaipur Badli police station in North-West Delhi, had caused the death of Jaswant Singh, tortured his family members and implicated them in a case. The CBI had filed the charge sheet following a Delhi High Court directive.
PIL on Netaji
CUTTACK, Oct 24 (UNI) — In a significant order, the Orissa High Court has asked the Union Government to take appropriate steps to have Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's name deleted from the list of "war criminals" reportedly being maintained by the British Government. The court passed the order yesterday while disposing of a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Dr Shyam Sunder Mohapatra, a former parliamentarian from Balasore. The Division Bench observed that the Union Government should take up the matter with the British Government.

Protected areas
BANGALORE, Oct 24 (PTI) — The Centre proposes to introduce two new categories of protected areas under wildlife legislation and is preparing a long-term action plan for forest, wildlife and environment conservation. The two new categories were community and conservation reserves, Union Environment and Forests Minister Suresh Prabhu told the sixth world wilderness congress which opened here today. Community reserves, would provide a legal recognition of voluntary wildlife conservation efforts by certain communities.
'Assassin' dead
ISLAMABAD, Oct 24 (UNI) — Fasih Ahmed, alleged assassin of Hakeem Mohammad Saeed, died in the custody of Pakistan’s Central Investigation Agency (CIA) last night. Ahmed and his accomplice were arrested in Karachi on Thursday. During interrogation he confessed to having killed Hakeem Saeed, founder of Hamdard Foundation in Pakistan and former Sindh Governor, the CIA said yesterday. Ahmed was alone in the cell when he died.
Apology sought
NEW DELHI, Oct 24 (PTI) — The CPI today demanded an "unconditional apology" from Human Resource Development Minister Murli Manohar Joshi for trying to "smuggle in" RSS agenda into education. "The attempt to communalise education by the BJP-led government has been foiled for the time being. But the minister is bent upon smuggling in RSS agenda in the field of education," the CPI said in a statement here.
Film chamber poll
CHENNAI, Oct 24 (PTI) — A city civil court today directed the South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce (STFCC) to defer chamber elections slated for tomorrow to October 28. Issuing the directive on a civil suit filed by Mr K. Munuswamy Naidu, proprietor of a city theatre, who had filed his nomination to the STFCC's executive committee, Assistant Judge, Yusuf Ali held there was a prima facie case to defer the elections, which would be in compliance with the seven-day clear notice period, as required under the chamber rules.
Bajwa member of economic cell

CHANDIGARH, Oct 24 — Mr P.S. Bajwa, a former Managing Director of the Punjab State Industrial Development Corporation (PSIDC), Punjab, has been appointed member of the economic and planning cell of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee.
The cell will prepare policy and programme with the perspective of "Punjab 2000-2025", according to a press note issued by the PPCC.
Mr Bajwa has had a distinguished career in industry.
CIL power cut
PATNA, Oct 24 (UNI) — The Bihar State Electricity Board (BSEB) today stopped power supply to the offices and residential colonies of three subsidiaries of Coal India Limited (CIL) from today. Minister of State for Energy Shyam Rajak told UNI here that power supply to Eastern Coalfields Limited, Central Coalfields Limited and Bharat Coking Coal Limited was stopped as they did not pay the dues of over Rs 166 crore to the BSEB by the deadline ending last evening. Mr Rajak reiterated that the board would not restore power supply to these companies unless they cleared the dues.
