Sweet shops: Workers of the Jan Chetna Manch on Tuesday forced the Weights and Measures Inspector to accompany them to challan certain owners of sweet shops who were indulging in unlawful activities. This was done to bring awareness among the consumers, according to the manch.

AMRITSAR

Elected: Dr Sukhdev Singh of the English Department of Guru Nanak Dev University has been elected to the National Governing Council of the Indian National Trust for Art and Culture Heritage, set up by the Union Ministry of Human Resources Development.

FAZILKA

Suicide: Sulkhan Singh (40) of Chak Palliwala village, 25 km from here, allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree. According to his wife , Kaushalya Devi, he was an addict and was mentally disturbed.
Crushed to death: Kanchan (12), daughter of a migrant labourer, Sunder Paswan of Banka Bihar district, was crushed to death under a tractor-trailer on Wednesday near New Grain Market here.

KAPURTHALA

Prohibitory orders: Mrs Usha R. Sharma, District Magistrate, has banned the sale, manufacture and storage of crackers in the district. However, the magistrate has allowed certain type of crackers to be sold. The order will remain in force till November 10.
Agricultural camp: The Agriculture Department held a camp to educate farmers of the district on the cultivation of the rabi crop. The Joint Director of the department, Dr Jaswinder Singh Bedi, said that 2000 quintals of improved quality seed of wheat would be made available to the farmers at a subsidised rate. Subsidised power-spray pumps and other agriculture-related machinery would also be provided to the farmers, he said.

LUDHIANA

Pensioners plea: The Northern Railways Pensioners Association has alleged that due to lack of communication between the Finance Ministry and the pension-disbursing authorities, banks and treasury offices, 90 per cent of the pensioners could not get the arrears along with their pensions for September. Mr Sher Singh, president of the association, appealed to the disbursing authorities to avoid unnecessary delay and harassment of the pensioners.
Meeting held: A meeting of the office-bearers of the Punjab Federation of University Teachers Association (PFUTA) was held on Wednesday at Punjab Agricultural University under the chairmanship of Dr S.S. Khaira, Convener of PFUTA. Various issues concerning the teachers of the four universities of Punjab, including the release of their salaries for August and September, were discussed.

Distinction: Dr Shashi Kant Uppal, an English poet and a teacher of English literature, has won the honour of having his biography included in the Dictionary of International Biographies to be published by the International Biographical Centre, Cambridge, England.

PHAGWARA

Tour: The president of the All-India Punjabi Bhalai Manch and former Union Minister, Balwant Singh Rammoowalia, will undertake a two- day tour of Punjab mandis from Friday to hear grievances of paddy growers. He will also hold a press conference at Jalandhar according to the district general secretary of the Manch.
Strike: Students of the local Guru Nanak College on Wednesday observed a strike in protest against the rise in fees and other charges by Guru Nanak Dev University. The students demanded the withdrawal of this hike.

ROPAR

Urged: Mr Lal Bahadur, district secretary of the Communist Party of India, has urged the state government to make it sure that no harassment would be done to farmers in the grain markets at the time of the purchase of paddy.
Bar association: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Bar Association of Anandpur Sahib: President — Mr Satya Dev Sharma; Vice-President — Mr Surinder Singh Rana; General Secretary — Mr B.S. Heera; and Joint Secretary — Mr Chanan Singh Virk.
Divali mela: A Divali mela will be held on October 18 at the local Giani Zail Singh Nagar by the District Cultural Centre and the Red Cross Society. A cultural programme will be held near the local Government College.

Mandir panel: Members of the Jayanti Devi Mandir Committee have stated that they have no objection if the Punjab Government decides to form a trust for managing the affairs of the temple. They said the annual income of the temple was Rs 3 lakh a year.
Condemned: The Burail unit of the democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) has condemned the indifference of the Chandigarh Administration towards the ongoing chain fast of the Action Committee for the development of villages. Mr SS Rana, Secretary of the unit, said the administration should withdraw the notices issued for the acquisition of Deep Complex, Hallomajra, and solve problems of villagers. The fast of the committee entered its seventh day on Thursday.
Elected: Mr Jagir Singh and Mr Rajinder Singh have been elected President and Vice-President, respectively, of the Managing Committee of Gurdwara Manji Sahib, Mani Majra.

Seminar: A seminar on the importance of lok adalats was organised by the Haryana State Legal Services Authority in coordination with the Public Relations at the mini-secretariat here on Thursday. The Vice-Chairman of the legal services authority, Mr D.D. Vohra, said 893 lok adalats had been held in the state so far.top

AMBALA

Nominated: Dr Gulbir Singh Chadha has been nominated president of the district unit of the Haryana Rajya Chikitsa Anubhavi Sangathan. A meeting of the unit will be held on October 17, Dr Chadha said.
Cow slaughter: About 200 persons blocked the Ambala-Jagadhri road for an hour near Do Sadka to demand the arrest of the culprits who had allegedly slaughtered a calf on Tuesday. Birudin and Ramzani were booked by the police after a complaint was received that they had slaughtered a calf at their residence at Barara. A case was registered against them under the Prevention of Cow-Slaughter Act.

Appointment: Mr U.C. Misra has taken over as the Executive Director of the Northern Region Power Grid.
Competition: A Divali mela was held at Daya Ram Public School on Wednesday. Kavita Trikha stood first in the senior group of the fancy dress competition. Sarvek Bajaj came second while Gazal Mehta and Shellaj Gera shared third position. In the junior group, Rahul Gandhi got the first position, while Vanshdeep and Prawan Narang got the second and third positions, respectively.

Workshop: The Haryana Remote Sensing Application Centre (HARSAC) here in collaboration with the Department of Space (DOS), organised a workshop on satellite data products and their use in natural resource management. The workshop was inaugurated by Mr D.R. Rao, Director, National Remote Sensing Agency.

Association: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Income Tax Karamchari Sangh Class III: President — Mr D.B. Chandelia; Secretary — Mr B.K. Siwach; Assistant Secretary — Mr Ashok Kumar; and Treasurer — Mr Vipin Kumar.
Rally: A large number of labourers sat on a dharna in front of the office of the Divisional Forest Officer here on Wednesday to protest against the non-acceptance of their demands. A rally was also held in which it was stated that the Chief Conservative Officer of the department had convened a meeting on October 28 at Karnal to hear their grievances.
Meeting: The Haryana Home Minister, Mr Mani Ram Godara, disposed of seven of the nine complaints at the monthly meeting of the District Public Relations and Grievances Committee held on Tuesday. Mr P.K. Mahapatra, Deputy Commissioner, and all heads of government departments were present at the meeting.

YAMUNANAGAR

Sale of crackers: The Deputy Commissioner has banned the sale of crackers in thickly populated areas of the district as a precautionary measure. In order to meet any emergency all hospitals, dispensaries and nursing homes will remain open on Divali.top

NAHAN

Sentenced: The Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, Mr M.K. Bansal, has sentenced Kanthi Ram of Boyala village of Paonta tehsil to six months simple imprisonment and a fine of Rs 2000 for the illegal possession of five bottles of liquor. In case of non-payment of the fine he will have to undergo two months additional imprisonment.

Cheque presented: A delegation of the All-India Women's Conference on Wednesday presented Rs 10,705 to the Governor, Mrs V.S. Ramadevi, for the victims of natural calamities.

SUNDERNAGAR

Protested: Students of Himachal Dental College have been on strike since Tuesday. They blocked the traffic for about 20 minutes on the National Highway 21. According to the students leaders if the dispute regarding the transfer of land is not resolved the students will start an indefinite fast.top
