BATHINDA

Status: Dr Om Parkash Sharma, senior vice-president of the district unit of the Punjab Chetna Manch on Sunday welcomed the decision of the state government to accord the category 'A' industrial backward status to Bathinda district. He said it would give boost to industrialisation here.
Appeal: State Food and Supply Minister, Chiranji Lal Garg on Sunday appealed to youths to launch a crusade against social evils. He was addressing a function here organised by the local S S Jain Sabha.

FARIDKOT

Camp: A week-long free eye check-up camp organised by the Lions Club (Vishal) concluded here on Saturday. Nearly 64 operations were performed and more than 600 persons examined. Medicines and spectacles were given free of cost.
Office-bearers: The following have been elected office-bearers of the PCMS Association of the local Government Guru Gobind Singh Medical College Hospital: President — Dr D.S.Gill; Vice-President — Dr K.M.D.S. Panag; General Secretary — Dr H.K.S. Chawla; and Treasurer — Dr Manjit Singh.

FAZILKA

3 Killed: A middle-aged man was crushed to death by a vehicle near the local grain market on Saturday. In another accident, Kundan Lal (70), a local resident, was run over by a jeep near taxi stand. An old man was also crushed to death by a jeep on the Malout road, 6 km from here, on Saturday.

JALALABAD

Lathi-charged: To foil the proposed rally of the BSP, the CPI and the CPM, the police resorted to lathi charge on Saturday when workers of these parties, led by Mr Mohan Singh Phalianwala, a former MP were marching towards the SDM's office. The rally was against the alleged police inaction in locating Kaka Singh, a BSP worker.

KHARAR

Traditional games: Mr Balramji Dass Tandon, Local Bodies Minister, Punjab has stressed on the need to develop the traditional games of the state. He was addressing a gathering at Machli Kalan village on Saturday.
Crushed: Nasib Singh, who was going on a cycle, was crushed to death by a truck here on Saturday. A case has been registered.

Campaign: The police will launch a campaign against drug addiction in the Patiala range. This was stated by Mr P.M.Dass, DIG, Patiala Range at a meeting held in PWD Rest House here on Saturday.

Supply of wheat: Residents of the town on Saturday urged the government to make arrangements for the supply of wheat and flour to through government fair-price shops.
Ban sought: Several local organisations, including the Arya Samaj, the Sanatan Dharam and some political organisations, have demanded a ban on smoking, drinking alcohol, beauty contests and gambling in the state. This was stated by the President of the Punjab Mahila Congress, Ms Malti Thapar, on Saturday.

Killed: Vipin a factory worker, was killed when his cycle was hit by a truck at the local Satnampura Mohalla on Saturday.

Golden jubilee: A get-together of Punjab cadre IPS officers, both serving and retired, was held on Saturday at Punjab Police Academy here. The meeting was held as part of the golden jubilee celebrations of Sardar Ballabh Bhai Patel National Police Academy. Mr P.C. Dogra, DGP, Punjab, was the chief guest.top

Eye camp: As many as 395 eye patients were examined at camp organised by the Lions Club Chandigarh Central here on Sunday. A press note said here that 59 cataract operations were also performed.top

BHIWANI

Sentenced: Mr J.R. Duggal, Subdivisional Judicial Magistrate, Charkhi Dadri, has convicted Dayanand, a hotel owner, and Sumer Singh, a milkman, to 1-year's rigorous imprisonment under the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act.

FATEHABAD

Conservation week: The District Education Officer , Mr Shriram Jakhar, has emphasised the need for conserving wildlife. He was speaking at the inauguration of "Wildlife Conservation Week" at Aryabhatt High School here on Saturday.
Power theft: The district police has registered four cases of power theft and booked Jai Singh and Dharamveer both of Pundri village, Paramjit , Lakhwinder and Sucha Singh of Nathwan village and Dina Ram of Chilewal village under Sections 379 and 39 of the Electricity Act.
Competition: A dance competition was held on Saturday by the local Intercity Social Club. Mr Rajbir Deswal, SP, presided.

Refund ordered: The District Consumer Forum has ordered M/s Sona Electronics, a BPL dealer, to refund the amount of a colour TV set which was found to be defective following a complaint by Ms Avtar Kaur Dogra of Shivaji Nagar here.

Elected: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Tehsil Welfare officers Association, Haryana: President — Mr Verinder Lohan; Vice-President — Mr Dewan Singh; Secretary — Mr Kali Ram, and Treasurer — Mr Rajinder Singh Sangwan.

SIRSA

Encroachments: In order to remove encroachments on government land, more than 12 "khokas" were removed by the PWD authorities near the Jiwan Nagar bus stand on Saturday.
Body found: The body of Murti Devi of Bhadra village in the district was found from an irrigation canal near Rania town, 25 km from here on Saturday. According to informed sources, she had been missing for the past few days in mysterious circumstances.
Attacked: Six members, including three women, of the family of Mr Lal Chand of Jodhpuria village in the district were injured seriously when attacked by sharpedged weapons by certain persons of the same village on Saturday. The victims had not polled their votes in favour of one of the accused. This led to the incident, according to sources.

BILASPUR

Case registered: A case under Sections 406 and 420 of the IPC has been registered against Santosh Kumar, alias Lucky of Naina Devi, an employee of GVC, a finance company on a complaint by Mr Tarsem Chand who was allegedly duped by the accused.

NAHAN

Seized: The Sirmaur police has seized 42 bags of "harad", a medicinal herb, from a truck during a naka at Dungaghat village in the Pachhad area. A case under the Indian Forest Act and the IPC has been registered.

SHIMLA

Raids: the police has seized 610 pouches of country-made liquor in raids during the past two days. The SP said the pouches were seized from the possession of two residents of Mani Majra in Chandigarh.

SOLAN

Gambling: Chattar Singh, Pratap Singh and Kuldip Singh, residents of Bhoach Kumarhatti and Bhaoli villages, were arrested on charges of gambling from a local hotel on Saturday. The Additional Superintendent of Police said some cash was recovered from them. A case under the Gambling Act has been registered.top
