BATHINDA

One killed: Ranjit Singh, an employee of the Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) was killed and two were injured when a truck hit them near the level crossing near thermal plant here on Thursday night. According to the police the truck crashed through the level crossing barrier and hit two scooterists and one cyclist. A case under Sections 279 and 304A of the IPC has been registered against the driver.

FATEHGARH SAHIB

Tubectomy camp: The agriculture development branch of the State Bank of Patiala at Bassi Pathana organised a tubectomy operation camp at the civil hospital. Mr P L Goyal, Civil Surgeon, inaugurated the camp.

FEROZEPORE

Body found: The cantonment police found a body on Friday from the fields along the road near Saint Joseph's Convent School here. The body, that of a male, was without the head, feet and hands which were probably chopped off before throwing it in the field.
Houses for SCs: A total of 144 houses constructed at a cost of Rs 74 lakh have been allotted to homeless persons belonging to the Scheduled Castes in Zira subdivision of this district. This was stated by the MLA for Dharamkot, Mr Sital Singh, at a rural gathering at Mahal village, 10 km from Zira, on Thursday. He handed over the keys of 10 such houses to allottees.
Eye camp: About 25 eye operations were performed and 500 patients suffering from various eye ailments were examined at a four-day free eye camp, which concluded at Santuwala village in Zira subdivision of this district on Thursday. The camp was organised by the Bhai Kanhaia Sports Club of the village.

HOSHIARPUR

Pensioners block traffic: About 100 pensioners including, women staged a dharna and blocked traffic in front of the main branch of the State Bank of India here on Friday. They were protesting against the bank's refusal to pay their monthly pensions after 12 noon. Later the bank authorities agreed to make the payments and the dharna was lifted.

JALANDHAR

Fine arts course: A refresher course in fine arts, organised by Guru Nanak Dev University, started at the local Apeejay College of Fine Arts on Friday. The Vice Chancellor, Dr H S Soch inaugurated the 21-day course, attended by nearly 40 lecturers from the Northern region.
Crushed to death: Two children were crushed to death in Puranpur village, 7 km from here, when a tractor trailor hit their cycle. The victims Iqbal Singh (13) and Pradeep Kumar (12) were returning from the Gurdwara in Dhilan village.

KHARAR

Residents' demand: More than 300 local residents in memoranda to the Principal Secretary, Local Self Government, Punjab, have demanded that the government should drop its proposal to extend the municipal limits of the town. They alleged that some property dealers, bureaucrats and politicians were behind the move in order to increase the value of their land.
Prohibitory orders: To ensure peaceful and smooth conduct of the Revenue Patwaris examination held by the Haryana Staff Selection Commission today, the district administration has prohibited the assembly of five or more persons and carrying of weapons around the examination centres.

PATHANKOT

Strike ends: The five-day relay fast by members of the BJP in the city was called off on Friday when their demand for the transfer of ASP, Gautam Cheema, for allegedly misbehaving with the local BJP President, was accepted.

PATIALA

Free eye camp: The local Lions Club (Supreme) organised a free eye check-up and operation camp here at Porar village. Nearly 244 patients were examined and 35 cataract operations were performed at the camp, according to a press note issued by the club here on Friday. Medicines were given to the patients free of cost.
Annual function: The Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology Employees' Association held its annual function here at which 14 recently retired employees were honoured. The Director of the institute, Dr M.P. Kapoor, was the chief guest.
Operation camp: Dr S.P. Singh and Dr Sukhdep S Boparai of the Patiala Eye Hospital will hold a free eye operation camp at Nirmal Kot village near Samana on Monday. Mr Kuldip Singh, SDM of Samana, will inaugurate the camp. Food and medicines will be provided free of cost by Akhara Dharam Dhaja, Nirmalkot.
Elected: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Gurbani Parchar Society here: President — Dr Tarlochan Singh; Vice President- Mr Mahinga Singh; Secretary — Mr Krishan Lal; and Treasurer — Mr Kulwinder Singh.

Pulse polio programme: Arrangements have been made in the district for administering polio drops to more than 1,25,000 children up to five years on December 6 under the national Pulse Polio programme. Mr K. S. Sidhu, Deputy Commissioner, said while presiding over a meeting of district-level Pulse Polio Coordination Committee here on Friday.

Blood donated: The local Dashmesh Taxi Union donated 17 units of blood on Saturday for those injured in the railway mishap near Khanna. The President of the union, Mr Jaskaran Singh Jassa, said taxis of the union had been provided to the administration for carrying bodies.

Murdered: Satwant Singh, a resident of Varnala village under Valtoha police station was killed by his father and two brothers on Thursday. The police has registered a case under Sections 302, 201 and 34 of the IPC against the three accused. top

BHIWANI

Ordered: The district Consumer Redressal Forum has directed the Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam to pay Rs 1,10000 to a complainant as costs. The forum also directed the HVPN to take action against the officials found guilty in the case and to charge the amount of the costs from them.

SIRSA

Body found: Mangal Singh (18), a resident of Mandi Kalanwali, was found dead in mysterious circumstances in fields near the town on Friday. According to informed sources, the body was found hanging from a tree. He was cremated after a post-mortem examination.
Red Cross Society: As many as 3837 units of blood were collected by the district Red Cross Society in 25 blood donation camps organised in collaboration with other social organisations in the district during the current year. While giving this information Dr Avtar Singh, Deputy Commissioner said here on Friday that 492 poor handicapped persons had been given artificial limbs by the society. Besides this, 73 tricycles and 45 wheel chairs would be given to poor and needy persons during the current financial year, he added.
Woman recovered: The Chief Judicial Magistrate , Mr B.Diwakar on Thursday ordered that Ms Prakash Kaur be sent to Nari Niketan at Ambala. She was reportedly abducted about a month ago and was recovered from the custody of Jeet Singh by the Sirsa police. A criminal case under Sections 363, and 366, of the IPC, was registered against the accused.
Electrocuted: Ram Niwas, a 27-year-old worker was electrocuted in a factory in the complex of the Haryana State Industrial Development Corporation (HSIDC) at Kundli village, 25 km from here, on Thursday. Representatives of various trade unions have demanded immediate payment of compensation to the bereaved family by the management of the factory.

Shaheedi Divas: The Sarvdaliya Nagrik Abhinandan Samiti will observe December 2 as "Shaheedi Divas" in the memory of those killed during the Emergency in 1975. A spokesman of the samiti told reporters here on Friday that a public meeting would be held in Ramlila Ground at Kharkhauda on that day.
Resistance: Stiff resistance by the people of Sirsadh village in Gohana subdivision of this district prevented a group of officials and police from getting panchayat land vacated from persons who had occupied it illegally.
Training programme: The District Urban Development Agency (DUDA) organised a one-day training programme on Swaran Jayanti Rozgar Yojna at Panchayat Bhavan here on Friday. The orientation programme, meant for field level officers and senior functionaries, was attended by 40 representatives of various municipal committees, District Child Welfare, Social Welfare, Health and Education departments and Red Cross Society.

SONEPAT

Six injured: Six persons were injured, two of them seriously, when a jeep collided with a scooter on the Sonepat-Gohana road near Tihar village on Saturday. The injured were admitted to the Civil Hospital, Gohana, and Medical College Hospital, Rohtak.top

BILASPUR

Demonstration: Members of the CPI and the CPM held a demonstration here on Thursday and also staged a dharna outside the office of the Deputy Commissioner and presented a memorandum to him. They were protesting against the failure of the BJP government to control the rising prices of essential commodities and generate enough employment opportunities for the youth.
Inquiry: Mr Hoshiyar Singh Thakur, member of the Zila Parishad and a former general secretary of the district Congress, has urged the Chief Minister, Mr Prem Kumar Dhumal, to order an inquiry into the alleged scandal regarding the purchase of photostat machines for the Deputy Commissioner's office here.
