BATHINDA One killed:
Ranjit Singh, an employee of the Punjab State
Electricity Board (PSEB) was killed and two were
injured when a truck hit them near the level
crossing near thermal plant here on Thursday
night. According to the police the truck crashed
through the level crossing barrier and hit two
scooterists and one cyclist. A case under
Sections 279 and 304A of the IPC has been
registered against the driver.

Tubectomy
camp: The agriculture development branch
of the State Bank of Patiala at Bassi Pathana
organised a tubectomy operation camp at the civil
hospital. Mr P L Goyal, Civil Surgeon,
inaugurated the camp.

Body
found: The cantonment police found a
body on Friday from the fields along the road
near Saint Joseph's Convent School here. The
body, that of a male, was without the head, feet
and hands which were probably chopped off before
throwing it in the field.
Houses for SCs: A total of 144
houses constructed at a cost of Rs 74 lakh have
been allotted to homeless persons belonging to
the Scheduled Castes in Zira subdivision of this
district. This was stated by the MLA for
Dharamkot, Mr Sital Singh, at a rural gathering
at Mahal village, 10 km from Zira, on Thursday.
He handed over the keys of 10 such houses to
allottees.
Eye camp: About 25 eye
operations were performed and 500 patients
suffering from various eye ailments were examined
at a four-day free eye camp, which concluded at
Santuwala village in Zira subdivision of this
district on Thursday. The camp was organised by
the Bhai Kanhaia Sports Club of the village.

Pensioners
block traffic: About 100 pensioners
including, women staged a dharna and blocked
traffic in front of the main branch of the State
Bank of India here on Friday. They were
protesting against the bank's refusal to pay
their monthly pensions after 12 noon. Later the
bank authorities agreed to make the payments and
the dharna was lifted.

Fine arts
course: A refresher course in fine arts,
organised by Guru Nanak Dev University, started
at the local Apeejay College of Fine Arts on
Friday. The Vice Chancellor, Dr H S Soch
inaugurated the 21-day course, attended by nearly
40 lecturers from the Northern region.
Crushed to death: Two children
were crushed to death in Puranpur village, 7 km
from here, when a tractor trailor hit their
cycle. The victims Iqbal Singh (13) and Pradeep
Kumar (12) were returning from the Gurdwara in
Dhilan village.

Residents'
demand: More than 300 local residents in
memoranda to the Principal Secretary, Local Self
Government, Punjab, have demanded that the
government should drop its proposal to extend the
municipal limits of the town. They alleged that
some property dealers, bureaucrats and
politicians were behind the move in order to
increase the value of their land.
Prohibitory orders: To ensure
peaceful and smooth conduct of the Revenue
Patwaris examination held by the Haryana Staff
Selection Commission today, the district
administration has prohibited the assembly of
five or more persons and carrying of weapons
around the examination centres.

Strike
ends: The five-day relay fast by members
of the BJP in the city was called off on Friday
when their demand for the transfer of ASP, Gautam
Cheema, for allegedly misbehaving with the local
BJP President, was accepted.

Free eye
camp: The local Lions Club (Supreme)
organised a free eye check-up and operation camp
here at Porar village. Nearly 244 patients were
examined and 35 cataract operations were
performed at the camp, according to a press note
issued by the club here on Friday. Medicines were
given to the patients free of cost.
Annual function: The Thapar
Institute of Engineering and Technology
Employees' Association held its annual function
here at which 14 recently retired employees were
honoured. The Director of the institute, Dr M.P.
Kapoor, was the chief guest.
Operation camp: Dr S.P. Singh
and Dr Sukhdep S Boparai of the Patiala Eye
Hospital will hold a free eye operation camp at
Nirmal Kot village near Samana on Monday. Mr
Kuldip Singh, SDM of Samana, will inaugurate the
camp. Food and medicines will be provided free of
cost by Akhara Dharam Dhaja, Nirmalkot.

polio programme: Arrangements have been
made in the district for administering polio
drops to more than 1,25,000 children up to five
years on December 6 under the national Pulse
Polio programme. Mr K. S. Sidhu, Deputy

Committee here on Friday.

Murdered:
Satwant Singh, a resident of Varnala village
under Valtoha police station was killed by his
father and two brothers on Thursday. The police
has registered a case under Sections 302, 201 and
34 of the IPC against the three accused.
