ABOHAR

Two killed: Two persons were killed in a road accident near Khuiansarwer village on the Abohar-Sriganganagar road here on Wednesday.

AMRITSAR

Murder: Uttam Chand (35), a watchman, was murdered in Dhab Wasti Ram locality on Tuesday. According to Mr Lakhbir Singh, (SHO C Division), he was murdered with sharp-edged weapons. A case has been registered.
Youth festival: The local DAV College lifted the overall championship trophy in Guru Nanak Dev University Inter-Zonal Youth Festival (final) for men and women which concluded here on Wednesday. KMV College, Jalandhar, was declared runners-up.

FEROZEPORE

Demonstration: Members of the local unit of the Northern Zone Insurance Employees Association held a demonstration outside the LIC office here on Wednesday in protest against the move of the government to privatise the insurance sector.

JALANDHAR

Passports: Applications for passports received in the Passport Office here till August 31 have been processed. The passports have been dispatched to the persons concerned.

KHARAR

Camps: The Rotary Club will organise a subsidised hepatitis-B camp at the local Khalsa Senior Secondary School on Sunday, according to Mr J.P. Dhiman, President of the club. The club will also associate with the State Bank of Patiala to organise a blood donation camp at Arya College for Women on Monday.

LUDHIANA

Limca quiz: A national-level "Limca Quiz 1998" was organised at Sacred Heart Convent School, Sarabha Nagar, here on Wednesday. In all 16 schools of Zone-A comprising Ludhiana, Nawanshahr, Jalandhar, Moga and Sangrur participated. The host school won the contest.

MOGA

Function: The district Red Cross Society has organised an annual fete here. The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Kulbir Singh Kang, presided over the function. Mr Ajmer Singh, Sub Divisional Officer, gave away the prizes.

PATIALA

Eye camp: The Lions Club, Rampura Phul, organised a free eye camp in which 638 patients were examined and 45 cataract operations were performed by Dr Mann Singh Bhatia, Professor and Head, Eye Department, Rajindra Hospital, Patiala.
Celebrations: A day long birthday celebrations of Sri Sathya Sai Baba was organised at Amar Ashram, Sai Dham, by the local Sri Sathya Sai Samithi. The celebration include distribution of free meals among the students of the school for the deaf and dumb.
Insurance employees: The Patiala unit of the North Zone General Insurance Employees Association on Wednesday criticised the Union Government for giving approval to private and foreign companies to enter the insurance sector in the country. Mr Vinod Dhundia, President of the association, said the on-going struggle would be intensified.

PHAGWARA

Two killed: Harinder Singh (25) was killed in a road accident near Mandhali village on the Phagwara-Banga road on Wednesday. In another incident Vinod Kumar (50) was crushed to death by a train on the Jalandhar-Nakodar section.
Eye camp: The local Manav Seva Sangh held an eye camp. During the camp 573 patients were examined and 84 operations conducted. Medicines and spectacles were provided free of cost to the patients. The Education Minister, Punjab Mr Swarna Ram, addressed the gathering on the concluding day on Wednesday.

Chain fast: The chain fast by members of the All-India MES Clerical Cadre and Group D Employees Association entered its seventh day on Thursday. The agitatiors, among other things, are demanding the revision of ratio for clerical cadre and sanction of AO and account keepers in the Garrison Engineers' office, according to Mr L R Chohan, Secretary of the association.
Cultural programme: A cultural programme was held at Tagore Theatre by Blue Bird School, here on Thursday. Four hundred students took part. Various dances were presented on the occasion. Mr Y P Katyal, Regional Chief of CBSE, was the chief guest.
Prize distribution: The Parent Teacher Association of GMSSS, Sector 22, organised a prize distribution function here on Thursday. Mr Brahmjit Kalia, who was the chief guest, gave away the prizes.

BHIWANI

Flayed: The All India Insurance Employees Association and the Bank Employees Federation of India have condemned the decision of the government to privatise the insurance sector. The associations announced that they would join the state-level rally to be held here on November 29.
Strike: Students of the local Government College observed strike on the second day here on Wednesday in protest against the transfer of Mr Dhara Singh, Lecturer of the Political Science. They later handed over the memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner.

KURUKSHETRA

Cooper prize: Dr Neena Seth of Kurukshetra University was awarded the D.C. Cooper prize at the All-India Conference of Cytology and Genetics held at Gulbarga university in Karnataka recently.

ROHTAK

Brahman sabha: Dr S.C. Dutt, Assistant Registrar, Maharshi Dayanand University, was elected President of the district unit of the Gaur Brahman Sabha at a meeting held here on Tuesday.
Murder: Dayanand (35) of Karsola village, near here, was allegedly murdered by two persons of the same village on Tuesday. The police has registered a case under Sections 302 and 34 of the IPC. In another incident, the police has found the body of Bal Kishan of Chhara village. The body has been sent for post-mortem.
Case registered: The Jhajjar police has registered a case against Kanwaljit Singh, a resident of Nangla Jagga village in Yamunanagar, for allegedly submitting a fake degree for recruitment to the Haryana Police.

SIRSA

Theft: Thieves entered the shop of a shoe merchant at the local Chandni Chowk here on Tuesday and took away some cash. A case has been registered.

SONEPAT

Freedom fighter dead: Pandit Devi Singh, a veteran freedom fighter of Haryana , died here on Wednesday. He was a Lance Naik in the Azad Hind Fauj established by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose in 1939. He was cremated with state honours.
Three arrested: The Sadar police arrested three persons on a charge of gambling during a surprise raid conducted by the police in Kabirpur village near here on Tuesday. The police recovered from them cash and some other articles used in gambling.

BILASPUR

Cases settled: As many as 125 of the 164 cases were settled in a district-level "prashashan janta ke dwar shivir" held in Mallokhar village on Tuesday. According to the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Ramesh Kapil, the rest of the cases would be referred to the departments concerned.
Free camps: The Government Mobile Eye Unit will organise three free eye treatment and operation camps at Kutheda from December 2 to 6, at Harlog from December 9 to 13 and at Namhole from December 21 to 25, Dr M.L. Mahajan, Chief Medical Officer, said here on Wednesday.

KULU

Hawaldar arrested: The police has arrested a hawaldar of the ITBP for allegedly molesting a minor girl at Bandrul on Tuesday. He was allegedly beaten by villagers and admitted to the district hospital. The police has registered cases against the hawaldar and the villagers.

SOLAN

Sentenced: The Subdivisional Judicial Magistrate, Mr Yashwant Singh, on Wednesday sentenced Roda Ram, a shopkeeper of Burawal, to six month's imprisonment for selling adulterated turmeric powder. He was also fined Rs 100. top
