AMRITSAR

Youth Festival: The final youth festival of Guru Nanak Dev University opened here on Sunday on the campus. Mr G.P.S. Shahi, Principal Secretary Education, Punjab, inaugurated the four-day festival. More than 800 students of various colleges are participating in 32 items.
Dharna:
The non-teaching employees of the non-government colleges of Punjab staged a dharna outside Khalsa College demanding implementation of the revised pay scales with effect from January 1, 1996.

BATALA

Blood camp: A blood donation camp was held by NCC cadets of S.L. Bawa DAV College here on Tuesday to mark NCC Day. The NCC cadets also launched a cleanliness drive in the college campus.

BATHINDA

Gang busted: The Kotfatta Police has busted a gang involved in several robberies and arrested its members. According to a press note issued here on Monday by the SSP, Mr Harnek Singh, a Maruti van, a countrymade 12 bore pistol, four live cartridges and Rs 5200 were seized from those arrested.

FATEHGARH SAHIB

Balmik Dharam Samaj: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Bhartiya Balmik Dharam Samaj: President — Mr Bir Amar Chand Mattu; Vice-President — Mr Birpal Chand; General Secretary — Mr Bir Sanjeev Kumar Sagar; and treasurer — Mr Bir Jatinder Kumar.
Akali Jatha:
The following have been appointed office-bearers of the District Akali Jatha: Advisers — Mr Randhir Singh Cheema and Mr Thakur Singh Khamano; Vice-Presidents — Mr Bachan Lal, Mr Kahla Singh and Mr Dalip Singh; and General Secretary — Mr Mubarak Singh.
Buleh Shah Trust: To strengthen the Punjabi art and culture in the district, Baba Buleh Shah Memorial Trust will be formed. This was stated by Mr T.R. Sarangal, Deputy Commissioner at a meeting of senior citizens.

FEROZEPORE

Ban orders: The District Magistrate, Mr Gurdev Singh Sidhu, has issued an order prohibiting the use of private boats in the Sutlej and Beas in the district. He has also imposed a curfew along the Indo-Pak border between 7.30 pm and 5.30 am. The movement of public along 50 m of all canals between 9.30 pm and 5.30 am has also been banned. The orders will remain in force till December 31.

FAZILKA

Patwaris stir: All 65 revenue patwaris of 93 villages in Fazilka subdivision remained on protest leave for the 6th day on Monday in support of their demands. The Revenue Patwari Union President, Mr Om Parkash, said here in a statement on Monday that they would intensify the stir if their demands were not accepted.

HOSHIARPUR

Clinical Laboratories Association: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Clinical Laboratories Association here: President — Dr Balkar Singh Bamber; General Secretary — Mr M S Saini; Treasurer — Mr Manmohan Singh; and Technical Advisor — Mr R C Dutta.

Protest rally: Members of the Punjab Pensioners' Welfare Association staged a protest rally and march at Adampur on Sunday in support of their demands. Mr B.R. Kaushal, president of the association highlighted the difficulties being faced by the pensioners.

Passports: Applications for passports received at the local passport office till August 21, have been processed and the passports have been despatched to the persons concerned.

LUDHIANA

Nishkam Seva Samiti: Nishkam Seva Samiti celebrated its 23rd annual day on November 21. Clothes stitched by students of Nishkam Sewing School centres and photographs of different social service programmes undertaken by the samiti were exhibited during the annual day celebrations. A cultural programme was also presented by the students of Nishkam Vidya Mandirs.

MOGA

Road repair: Residents of Bhekha and Darolibhai villages under Baghapurana police station have to suffer inconvenience because of the dilapidated condition of about 4 km stretch of road connecting these villages. The villagers allege that no repair work has been carried out there in the past several years.

PATIALA

Free camp: As many as 538 patients were examined and 25 operated upon during a special health check-cum-free medicine distribution and free eye operation camp organised by the Dedicated Brothers Group in collaboration with the State Bank of Patiala, Sanauri Adda branch.
Elected: Prof C.S. Virk and Prof Manjit Singh have been elected President and General Secretary respectively of the Government College Teachers' Association, Mohindra College, here.
De-addiction camp: Guru Gobind Singh Study Circle, Samana, organised a de-addiction camp at Fatta Majri village here to mark the tercentenary celebrations of the birth of Khalsa. Thirtyfive addicts were given counselling to enable them to leave the habit.
Inaugurated: The Jan Hit Samiti Heera Devi Memorial Sewing Centre has been inaugurated by Mrs Jenifer Kapoor and Mr Ram Kapoor. Principal (retd) B.K. Kapoor has donated two rooms in his ancestral house, 12 sewing machines and Rs 50,000 for the setting up of the centre.
Founder's day:
The Sai Model High School celebrated its 20th annual foundation day, coinciding with the 73rd birthday of Sri Sathya Sai Baba. The chief guest Mr Pran Sabharwal, a well-known theatre personality, gave away the prizes to meritorious students.
Eye camp: The local Lions Club (Fort) organised a free eye check-up- cum-operation camp at Lalochhi village on Sunday. Mr Vijay Goyal, president of the club said that 250 cases were examined and 150 operations were performed at the camp. Medicines and food were served to the patients by the club.

PHAGWARA

Function: Ms SK Aulakh, Commissioner of Income Tax, Jalandhar, here on Monday presided over a function in connection with the "kar vivad samadhan scheme 1998" and "I-PAN cards" of the Income Tax Department. The function was organised by the Phagwara Chamber of Commerce and other voluntary and social organisations. Mr B.S Sandhu Joint Commissioner of Income Tax Range-2, Jalandhar, highlighted the salient features of PAN identity cards to tax payers.

ASI remanded: Mr Tejwinder Singh, Judicial Magistrate, on Monday remanded Pal Singh, Assistant Sub Inspector of the Chandigarh Police to judicial custody until December 4.
Remand for trafficker: The Judicial Magistrate, Mr Tejwinder Singh on Monday remanded Cyril Archbong, alias Tony, a Nigerian, to police custody until November 25. He was arrested by the local police on the charge of possessing 2.5 kg smack valued at Rs 2.5 crore.
Elected: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Punjab Labour Department Subordinate Officers Association: president — Mr Surinder Singh; vice-president — Mr Krishan Chand; general secretary — Mr Swaran Singh and cashier — Mr Sukhdarshan Kumar.
Advisory cell: The district-level advisory cell set up at Panchkula on Tuesday claimed to have solved 15 cases relating to marriage, dowry and land disputes. The cell was created to check atrocities against weaker sections and women.
Grief expressed: Mr Amarinder Singh, President of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) has expressed grief over the death of Mr Faqir Chand Sharma, a former Minister. The PPCC President said that Mr Sharma was a Congressman to the core and well-known freedom fighter.
Punjabi play: "Moments" a tele serial by Manjhi Films will be shot on various locations in and around Chandigarh from Wednesday. The serial deals with the moments which are common in all Hindi films, a press note said.

AMBALA

Painting competition: Abhoudaya Aggarwal of SD Public School won the first prize at the on-the-spot painting competition organised by the Lions and Leos clubs of Ambala Samaritans here on Monday. The winners in other categories were Tabassum Naaz, Garima Chauhan, Anita and Khushal. Mr Anil Vij, MLA, gave away the prizes.

BHIWANI

Arrested: The police has succeeded in arresting the third accused in the Dr Raman murder case. With his arrest all three accused allegedly involved in the case have been apprehended. The third accused, Yogesh of Hindol village of Bhiwani district, was arrested. Two other accused Basanta and Jogender who were arrested earlier have been remanded to police custody till November 28 by Mr J.S. Siddhu, Civil Judge (Jr Division)-cum-Judicial Magistrate.

JIND

NCC Day: Fifteenth Haryana Battalion of NCC group headquarters , Ambala, celebrated 50th NCC Day at Government College, Jind on Monday. The function was presided over by Major General (retd) A.C. Mangla. He also gave the prizes to outstanding cadets, who had participated in various inter-unit competitions.

Inaugurated: Lt Gen (retd) O.P. Kaushik,Vice-Chancellor of Maharshi Dayanand University on Monday inaugurated a UGC sponsored refresher course on "Research Methodology". The course is being organised by the Sociology Department of the university. About 50 delegates from various universities and colleges will take part in the refresher course.
Raids:
Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam (HVPN) imposed penalties worth Rs 1.70 lakh on defaulters during raids at Titoli and Sunderpur villages on Sunday. The raids were conducted by a party comprising nearly 20 officials headed by Mr H.K. Sharma, Superintending Engineer.

SONEPAT

Resentment: Resentment prevails among the residents of Kharkhauda town because of the inadequate and erratic supply of drinking water.
Protest: The Haryana Student Welfare Association protested on Sunday against the hike in tuition fee by the managements of private colleges in the city and warned that the students would go on an indefinite strike if the hike was not withdrawn immediately.
Road mishaps:
Wrestler Raghbir was killed in a road accident on the Sonepat-Bahalgarh road near Raipur village, about 8 km from here, on Sunday. In another road accident Vidya was killed on the spot when the scooter on which she, along with her husband and a child, was travelling, skidded near Sandal Khurd village, about 5 km from here, on Sunday. Her husband and child were injured and have been hospitalised.
Body found: The Kharkhauda police found the body of a young woman from diversion drain number 8 near Sisana village, about 25 km from here, on Sunday. The body was in a decomposed state and was sent to Medical College Hospital. Rohtak, for a postmortem examination.
Strangulated: The body of Ram Bhaj (32) was found hanging from a tree on the outskirts of Bhatgaon village, about 15 km from here, on Sunday. According to the postmortem report, the victim had been strangulated to death. In another incident police found the body of 19-year-old Rekha hanging in her house in Sant Colony at Kharkhauda, 19 km from here, on Sunday. The police suspect it to be a case of suicide.

SIRSA

Shopkeeper fined: Additional district and Sessions Judge S.D. Anand on Monday awarded a one-year jail sentence and imposed a fine of Rs 5000 on Jaswant Rai Arora of Begu village in this district under Sections 7,10,55 of the Essential Commodities Act. Arora had been running a fair price shop in the village and 1070 litres of kerosene was found short in his stock during a raid conducted by officials of the State Food and Supplies Department, Haryana in December, 1996. A case was registered against him at the Sadar police station.top

JAWALAMUKHI

Money for education: The Himachal Government will spend Rs 598 crore for the expansion of education in the state during the current fiscal year. This was stated by Education Minister Ishwar Dass Dhiman here on Monday. Mr Dhiman said the previous government had opened many schools without any budgetary provision. He said the government needed 6,000 teachers, 48,000 classrooms and an amount of Rs 200 crore for the purpose.
Casteless society: Mr Ramesh Choudhary, Irrigation and Public Health Minister on Tuesday called for carving out a casteless and classless society by bridging the gap between the rich and the poor. He was addressing a prize distribution function at Bharoli Kohala school, near here.
