ABOHAR

Rally: Cotton and paddy growers held a rally at New Grain Market here on Monday and demanded a compensation of Rs 10,000 per acre for the loss to their crops during rains.

AMRITSAR

Pensions distributed: The Mayor of Amritsar distributed Rs 1.50 lakh as pension among 500 old persons at a function held here on Sunday.

FEROZEPORE

Dental camp: A 15-day free dental check-up camp organised at the local Civil Hospital concluded on Monday. The Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Punjab, Mr Inderjit Singh Zira, was present on the concluding day. Dr V.K. Bassi, Civil Surgeon, said as many as 16,000 patients were examined at the camp and 172 patients were provided with dentures free of cost.

JALANDHAR

Conversion Day: 12th battalion of Mechanised Infantry Regiment celebrated its 24th Conversion Day somewhere in the western sector on Monday. The highlight of the celebrations was a dare-devil exhibition of free fall sky diving and parasailing by its personnel.

LUDHIANA

Eye camp: The local Nishkam Seva Ashram held a free eye operation camp at Mattewara village in this district on Sunday. As many as 360 patients were examined and 28 cataract operations performed at the camp.
Voters identity cards: The district administration will issue voters identity cards in the city from November 25 to 29 during the last phase of issuing of the cards. The Deputy Commissioner and District Polling Officer, Mr Arun Goel, said that photographs for the cards would be taken at various polling stations.
Convocation: The annual convocation of the College of Agriculture, Punjab Agricultural University, will be held on November 27, Dr Paul Singh Sidhu, Dean of the college said here on Monday.

Award: Dr Chander Shekhar, a local palmist, was awarded a gold medal at a sammelan organised at Nabha by the Jyotish Ratnakar, Nabha.

NAWANSHAHR

Function: A district-level bal vigyan mahasabha was held here on Monday. Mr Avtar Singh, District Education Officer, presided over the function. Government Senior Secondary School, Zikka Labhana, won the first prize. Adarsh Bal Vidyalaya, Nawanshahr, and Government Senior Secondary School, Nawanshahr, got the second and third prizes, respectively.
Celebrated: The History Association of the local R.K. Arya College organised a function on the college premises on Monday to mark National Youth Day. Mr C.S. Talwar, ADC (D), Bathinda, who is the founder member of the Vivekanand Study Circle, presided over the function.

Dharna: Hundreds of the state government employees held a dharna in front of the Commissioner's office on The Mall on Monday to demand implementation of their long-standing demands. The call for dharna was given by the Punjab State Karamchari Dal. Their demands include payment of dearness allowance instalment from July 1998.

PHAGWARA

Dharna: Cane growers of this area on Monday staged a four-hour dharna in support of their demands. They warned that in case the local sugar mill did not enter into a written agreement with them by November 19 they would resort to stringent steps.
Training programme: A one-month finger print training programme for 10 Palestinian security personnel was started on Monday at the Police Training Academy, Phillaur. Mr A.A. Siddiqui, Academy Director, inaugurated the course.

Blood donated: A total of 105 students of the Central Polytechnic, Sector 26, donated blood during a camp organised on Tuesday.
Promoted: Mr Gurbachan Dass, Company Commander, has been promoted as District Commandant, Home Guards, a spokesperson of the Chandigarh Administration said.

Medical camp: A medical camp was organised by the Bhojia Charitable Trust for Science and Research, Manimajra, at Aggarwal Bhavan in Sector 16 here on Tuesday. Two Non-resident Indian doctors from Canada, Dr Jaswant Mindra and Dr Nevile Kapoor, examined patients.top

Three held: The police has arrested Naresh, Mukesh and Lal Singh in connection with the alleged murder of Pavan, a 15-year-old student of Ahirwada in Ballabhgarh.

HISAR

One killed: Balbir, a scooterist, was killed and the pillion rider injured in a road accident near Shikarpur village on Monday. The police has registered a case.
Looted: Two miscreants looted Rs 8,500 from a country liquor shop at gunpoint in Uklana Mandi on Monday.

KURUKSHETRA

Free camp: The local Rotary Club will organise a free child heart disease check-up camp in collaboration with the Escorts Heart Institute, New Delhi, on the premises of Dayanand Mahila Mahavidyalaya here on November 21. During the camp ECG and echo-cardiography services will be rendered free of cost.

ROHTAK

Murder: Saroj, a married woman, was allegedly murdered by her brother-in-law and his wife at Kharainti village on Monday. The police has registered a case.

SHAHABAD

Elected: Mr Jagir Singh Kamboj of Shahabad and Mr Jarnail Singh of Ajrana Khurd village have been elected President and Vice-President, respectively, of the local Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee.
Office-bearers: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Haryana State Roller Flour Millers Association: President — Mr C.P. Gupta; Senior Vice-President — Mr Punit Sethi; Vice-President — Mr P.C. Goyal; and Secretary-cum-Treasurer — Mr Rakesh Aggarwal.

SONEPAT

One arrested: With the arrest of Sunil of Rohat village, the city police claim to have solved the murder of Sandeep, a student of the local Hindu College, who was allegedly murdered on October 29. Another alleged culprit, Ajay is still absconding.
Gang busted: With the arrest of six members of a gang, the CIA staff claim to have busted an inter-district gang of thieves operating in Sonepat and Gurgaon districts for the last few months. Mr Salvraj, SP, said here on Tuesday.

KANGRA

Traffic blocked: Unemployed art and craft teachers blocked traffic on the Pathankot-Mandi highway at Gaggal on Monday in protest against the government's failure to absorb them in jobs. The protesters alleged that untrained persons were appointed by the government, ignoring trained teachers.
Suicide: Arjun Singh, plus two student of Gard village in Dheera subdivision, committed suicide by consuming pesticides. He died in a hospital on Monday.

MANALI

Rescue posts: Two rescue posts have been set up at Marhi on the Manali-Leh highway and Khoksar in Lahaul and Spiti district by the Directorate of Mountaineering and Allied Sports, Manali. The rescue posts will help monitor the safety of pedestrians crossing over the 13,050-ft high Rohtang Pass.

SOLAN

Donated: The local Lioness Club has donated furniture and blackboards worth Rs 35,000 to Government Primary School, Barog. The club President, Ms Abha Mahajan, said the club had also adopted 10 students who had been provided books, dresses and school fees.top
