Bodo militants gun down 6
GUWAHATI, Nov 8 (UNI) — Bodo militants gunned down at least six persons and injured 30 others near the India-Bhutan border last night. The police said today suspected National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) militants with automatic weapons indiscriminately fired upon hundreds of people gathered to attend a festival at Jalah in Barapeta district about 9 p.m. yesterday on the eve of the President’s visit to the state. The ultras numbering 12 fired for about five minutes as hundreds of people scrambled for life.

14 Tigers killed
COLOMBO, Nov 8 (PTI) — At least 14 militants of the LTTE were killed in the continued violence in the northern and eastern areas of Sri Lanka, the Defence Ministry said here today. Four LTTE militants were killed and six wounded when troops confronted a group in the northern Wanni region yesterday, a ministry press note said. Three other rebels were killed when the Lankan troops fired near Mankulam in the Wanni region, which was captured by the army recently.

Parcel bomb
BILASPUR (MP), Nov 8 (PTI) — A woman telephone operator was killed and two persons were injured when a parcel bomb exploded in a public call office at a busy bus stand here last evening, the police said today. Pratima Tiwari (25), working in the PCO for more than a year, was torn to pieces under the impact of the blast that occurred when she tried to open a parcel delivered at the office by a government postman.

Case against MLA
GHAZIABAD, Nov 8 (PTI) — A criminal case was registered against Uttar Pradesh MLA from Modinagar, Narendra Sisodia, for allegedly assaulting a peon of the Additional District Magistrate (ADM) at the district collectorate here, the police said today. According to the complaint filed at the Kavi Nagar police station, Sisodia slapped the peon of ADM Anand Vardhan when asked to wait for Mr Vardhan’s permission and barged into his chamber yesterday, the police said.

Jerusalem poll
JERUSALEM, Nov 8 (Reuters) — An Arab will seek a seat on Jerusalem’s Israeli-run council for the first time since 1967 this week in defiance of a long-standing PLO call to boycott elections. Mr Musa Ilayan, a 47-year-old accountant and insurance agent, has formed his own independent Arab Bloc and is openly campaigning for votes in Arab East Jerusalem ahead of Tuesday’s election despite death threats he says he has received from extremists.

Ship capsizes
JOHANNESBURG, Nov 8 (DPA) — A coastal ship on a voyage from Maputo, Mozambique, to Durban, South Africa, was missing and appeared to have sunk with one crewman washed up on a beach. Sixteen crew members were missing after the disappearance of the ship since Friday evening off the coast of Kwazulu Natal province. A South African air force spokesman said helicopters had gone out to look for the ship, which was reported to have capsized but had found nothing.

Dalit front in TN
CHENNAI, Nov 8 (UNI) — The Puthiya Tamizhagam, led by Dalit leader K Krishnasamy has proposed to form a fourth front in Tamil Nadu as an alternative to the two strong fronts led by the ruling DMK and the AIADMK. Talking to newspersons here, he said the fourth front led by his party would solicit the support of suppressed and oppressed minorities in the state. However, it was in the primitive stage, he added. The modalities for formation of the front were being worked out with like-minded parties, he said.

NEW DELHI, Nov 8 (PTI) — The condition of Congress MP and former Union Minister Natwar Singh, who was admitted to a private hospital here on Friday following complaints of mild chest discomfort and uneasiness is stable, hospital sources said. Specialists attending on Mr Natwar Singh at the Escorts Heart Institute ruled out a heart attack, the sources said. Congress president Sonia Gandhi, former Union Minister Madhavrao Scindia and DPCC president Sheila Dixit called on Mr Singh.

Quake in Andamans
NEW DELHI, Nov 8 (PTI) — An earthquake of mild intensity was recorded in the Andaman Sea region today, the meteorological office said. The quake, measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale, occurred at 3.29 p.m., it said. Earlier, an earthquake of moderate intensity, measuring five on the Richter scale, was experienced in Andaman and Nicobar Islands yesterday.

6 shot dead
JEHANABAD (Bihar), Nov 8 (PTI) — Six persons were gunned down and two injured by extremists belonging to the banned CPI-ML (People’s War Group) at Ahiyara village in Jehanabad district tonight, the police sources said. They said armed extremists raided the village at around 2100 hours and shot dead six villagers. The victims were believed to be supporters of the banned Ranbir Sena, a private army of landlords. The injured were admitted to Sadar Hospital here. The DIG, Magadh Range, S K Bhardwaj and Jehanabad Police Superintendent Ajay Singh reached the spot. A combing operation was under way to nab the extremists.

Teachers' strike
NEW DELHI, Nov 8 (PTI) — All- India Kendriya Vidyalaya Teachers Association today withdrew its proposed country wide strike from November 16 for acceptance of its demands following talks with Union Human Resources Development Minister M.M. Joshi. The decision to withdraw the strike was taken following Mr Joshi’s assurance to an association delegation here yesterday that their main demands, including timely payment of salary to all central school teachers, would be favourably considered.
