ABOHAR

Murder: Joginder Singh of Seetogunno village in this subdivision was allegedly killed by his brother, Rajinder Singh, on Thursday, police sources said on Friday. The accused suspected his brother of having illicit relations with his wife. A case under Section 302, IPC was registered.

AMRITSAR

SPO commits suicide: Jatinder Kumar (26), SPO, committed suicide with his service rifle while on duty here on Thursday.
Science mela: Mr Bhag Singh Ankhi, Honorary Secretary, Chief Khalsa Dewan, Amritsar, inaugurated a three-day science fair at the local Shri Guru Har Kishan Public School on Friday. As many as 57 teams participated in various competitions.

BATALA

Holy bath: Devotees from all over the country visited Achleshwar Temple, 7 km from here, on the Batala-Jalandhar road on Friday and took a holy bath there. Every year a festival is organised here during October.

FARIDKOT

Eye operation camp: The Elders Service Society here and the district Health Department will organise a four-day free eye operation camp at Deepsinghwala village from November 6. Medicines, spectacles and other necessary items will be provided free of cost.
Elected: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Punjab Gazetted School Officers Association: President — Mr Joginder Singh Aulakh (Sangrur); Senior Vice-Presidents — Mr Sadhu Singh Randhawa (Amritsar) and Mr Lachhman Singh Brar (Faridkot); Vice-Presidents — Mr Jagjit Singh (Mansa) and Mr Avtar Singh (Hoshiarpur); General Secretary — Mr Sarabjot Singh (Amritsar); and Treasurer — Mr Dharam Singh (Sangrur).

FAZILKA

Crushed: One man was crushed to death by a truck on the Abohar-Fazilka road near Banwala village on Friday. According to reports, Kakka Singh (60) of Bhangala village had gone to Korian Wali village to pay obeisance at the village temple. A case has been registered.

GURDASPUR

Prohibited: Mr S.K Sandhu District Magistrate, has prohibited all types of movements from the international border to the fencing by the BSF from 9 pm to 5 am daily in the district. However, this order will not be enforceable on GT Road from the border barrier to Gurdaspur. He has also banned wearing of identical uniforms of police, para-military forces and army officials. Both these orders will remain in force till December 25.
Association: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Retired Municipal Employees Union of Gurdaspur and Dhariwal: President - Mr Sohan Lal; Vice-President — Mr Mehnga Ram; Secretary — Mr Santokh Singh; and Treasurer — Mr Chander Prakash.

HOSHIARPUR

Land registration: The Revenue Department has decided to do land registration work from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. daily at all tehsil offices in Jalandhar division. This was stated by Mr V.K. Sirivastava, Commissioner, Jalandhar division, at a meeting of the Deputy Commissioners of Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Nawanshahr, Gurdaspur and Amritsar on Thursday.
Dental camp: The local branch of the State Bank of India and the Civil Hospital here organised a dental check-up camp at Government Middle School, Jaipur on Thursday. As many as 165 children were examined and medicines were given free of cost.
Jhuggis gutted: A fire broke out in jhuggis near the pressure cooker factory on the Phagwara road on Thursday. About 50 jhuggis were gutted. The cause of fire is not known. No loss of life has been reported.

JALANDHAR

Mela: The seventh "Gadari Babian Da Mela" started with a musical competition here at Desh Bhagat Yaadgar Hall on Friday. Artistes from various parts of the state participated.

LUDHIANA

Training programme: A training-cum-demonstration programme on preservation and processing of fruits and vegetables was conducted at the Regional Centre of Central Food Technological Research Institute from October 26 to 30. The training programme was attended by 22 women of the Nishkam Seva Sangh Training Schools and seven other prospective entrepreneurs from Ludhiana, Patiala and Amritsar.
Nominated: Mr Jagjit Singh Shad, President, Northern India Chamber of Commerce and Industry, has been nominated member of the Divisional Railway Users Consultative Committee for two years.

MALERKOTLA

Compensation: Mr Nusrat Ali Khan, Sport Minister, Punjab, on Thursday visited the site of the fire in which seven khokhas were reduced to ashes at Ludhiana bypass here on Tuesday. The minister promised to secure full compensation to the sufferers.
Consumer service month: A meeting was organised by the Indian Oil Corporation at the local Parmeshwar Oil Company on Thursday in connection with the consumer service month observed by the company.

Body found: The police found a body on Grand Trunk Road on Thursday. It was sent for a post-mortem examination.
Inaugurated: The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Kulbir Singh Kang, inaugurated a three-day Punjab University Zonal Youth Festival at the local S.D. College for Women.
Banned: The District Magistrate, Mr Kulbir Singh Kang, has banned the export of DAP fertiliser from the district with immediate effect. These steps have been taken following an increase in the demand of DAP by farmers busy in sowing the rabi crop.

Drama: The local National Theatre Arts Society staged a play at Baba Mal Singh Memorial Girls College, Chappa village in Sangrur district recently.

Science congress: A children's science congress of the district was held at Government Senior Secondary School for Girls here recently. In the elementary category, Ashish Aggarwal of RTP Nuhon colony stood first, Pushpinder Kaur of the local Government Senior Secondary School for Girls came second and Harmanjit Kaur of DAV Senior Secondary School, here was third. In the senior category, Poonam Bedi of DAV School here came first and Satwinder Kaur of Senior Secondary School for Girls, Anandpur Sahib, stood second.top

GURGAON

Seized: Excise staff of Gurgaon seized 12 cartons of English wine and 10 cartons of the IMFL from a car near Sector 10. The driver of the car has been arrested and a case has been registered.

HISAR

Road blocked: Villagers blocked the Barwala-Jind road near Barot village in the district on Friday in protest against the death of two minor girls in an accident on Thursday. The blockade was lifted on the intervention of the SDM. Meanwhile, the police has registered a case.
Wine seized: The CIA staff of the Hansi police raided the house of Mr Jagdish Yadav, a former Chairman of the local Market Committee, on Friday and seized 39 bags of the English wine and 17 bags of beer. A case under the Excise Act has been registered against him and his brother.
Union: The following have been elected office-bearers of the local unit of the Northern Railway Men's Union: President — Mr Suraj Bhan Sharma; Vice-President — Mr Deviram, Mr Shrikrishan, Mr Chander Bhan and Mr Sanjhi Ram; Secretary — Mr Madanlal Yadav; and Treasurer — Mr Devender Singh.
One Killed: One person was killed and four others injured when a jeep carrying them crashed into a tree near Bherian village, 20 km from here, on Friday. The mishap occurred when the driver lost the control of the vehicle.

Chain snatchers: Two youths snatched a gold chain from a woman in the local Gandhi Nagar colony on Thursday. One of the culprits was nabbed while the other managed to escape with the chain.

SIRSA

Suicide: A.K Yadav (25), an employee of the local Air Force Station, allegedly committed suicide at his residence on Friday. A post-mortem examination of the deceased was conducted at the Civil Hospital.top
