ABOHAR
Implementation

Even though the municipal authorities have taken steps to implement the order of the Punjab and Haryana High Court regarding traffic regulations yet it is far from being fully implemented. The removal of hoardings has led to the painting of commercial advertisements on the boundary walls of schools. Many drivers and conductors of roadways buses wear neither uniforms nor their name plates and vehicles with tinted glasses are still moving. But many two wheeler drivers have started using helmets and there has been a marked increase in the sale of helmets in the town.

AMRITSAR

AIDS

According to the latest WHO figures, there were more than 41 lakh HIV-positive cases in India. This was revealed by the Nodal AIDS Officer, Dr Ravi Saini, who had recently returned from Switzerland, after attending the 12th World Conference on AIDS. Dr Saini pointed out that out of the 41 lakh cases, more than 25 per cent were women patients.

Seminar
The Amritsar Retail Kiryana Merchants Association organised a seminar on Income Tax on Saturday. The Commissioner of the Income Tax, Mr S.J.S. Pall, highlighted various schemes for small shopkeepers regarding Income Tax returns. As many as 250 shopkeepers from all over the district participated in the seminar.

GURDASPUR
Four arrested
The police on Saturday arrested four persons on the Pathankot-Jammu highway and seized a truck carrying 1585 planks of willow wood. The accused belonged to Baramula district in Jammu and Kashmir.
Two killed: Two persons were killed on the spot on Saturday when a truck crushed them while they were sleeping on the roadside near Sarna. A case has been registered.

HOSHIARPUR
Arrested
The Garhshanker police arrested Mr Avtar Singh Karimpuri, general secretary of Punjab unit of the BSP, and some other leaders of the party on Friday night. A case has been registered under Sections 451, 353, 427, 147 and 149, of the IPC against them. The arrests have been made in connection with a clash between BSP activists and the police on Wednesday.
Thief caught
Villagers of Dadiana village chased two scooter thieves and caught one of them while they were trying to escape after forcibly taking away a scooter on Friday evening, at Dadiana Choe. The thief who was overpowered had been identified as Anil Kumar, a resident of Adampur. He was handed over to the police at Hariana. The thieves had snatched the scooter from Mr Des Raj a resident of Nandachaur on dagger point.
Dissolved
The Punjab Congress Seva Dal dissolved the district unit of the dal, according to Mr Madan Sud, organising secretary of the state unit of the dal here on Saturday. He stated that Mr Naval Kishore Kalia would continue as the chairman of the district unit till the formation of the new body.

LUDHIANA
Doctors' strike
The MD, MS doctors of Dayanand Medical College and Hospital went on an indefinite strike on Saturday to press the hospital management for the implementation of fifth Pay Commission recommendations. Services in the Emergency and the Intensive Care Units were severely affected.

Traffic rules

Following a directive from the Deputy Commissioner, the local administration has started taking measures to regulate traffic and ensure compliance of pollution control measures in the district. Many scooter and three-wheeler drivers and drivers of other vehicles were challaned on Saturday for violating traffic rules.
Demolished
A squad of the Municipal Corporation assisted by the police and other officials demolished a large number of encroachments on the G.T. Road on Saturday. The wooden stalls and unauthorised shops built on both sides of the road between the office of the Deputy Commissioner and Moga bypass were demolished and the goods confiscated.

PATIALA

Karamchari dal
A deputation of the Punjab State Karamchari Dal will meet Punjab Finance Minister, Capt Kanwaljit Singh, on August 3 regarding their long-pending demands. Their main demands include regularising the services of daily wagers and increase in pension from 5 to 10 per cent for those above 65 years.
Urged
A delegation of the Patiala Beopar Mandal met Mr Sudhir Mittal, Commissioner of the Sales Tax, here on Saturday and urged him to issue notification regarding the revised Sales Tax rates. The Commissioner assured the delegation that the notification would be issued within a week.

Creches

The Child Development Council, Punjab, has approved six new creches and a Balwari Centre for the Ropar district for the children of needy and poor families. Mrs Sukhjit Kaur Sidhu, chairperson of the district unit of the council, said new balwari centre would be opened at SAS Nagar while creches would be opened at Mullanpur Garibdas, Parrol, Kumbhra, SAS Nagar, and Bhago Majra.

Encroachments
The local administration launched a special drive on Friday to remove encroachments on roadsides and footpaths to regulate traffic. Mr Jagdish Rai, Deputy Magistrate, Mr Pradeep Goyal, SDO (B and R) city police and officials of the Municipal Council and PWD supervised the removal of encroachments. Shopkeepers of Ghagga road market protested against the drive.

Passport stolen
Mr Mehdi H. Lili, a resident of Boys Hostel No. 3, in a complaint to the police alleged that his passport, a camera and air tickets had been stolen from his room. A case has been registered.

Triple murder

Three persons were allegedly murdered in Mohna village on Friday. According to the police, the victims have been identified as Rajan, his wife Janak and their daughter Kajal (2).

Vanamahotsava

A function was organised at sugar mill here to celebrate the vanamahotsava on Friday evening. Mr Dharmvir, Commissioner, Hisar Division presided over and launched a "Green Jind" campaign by planting a sapling. Mr Tarun Bajaj, Deputy Commissioner said on the occasion that seven lakh saplings would be planted on panchayat land.

Relief fund

The staff of the local Punjab National Bank contributed Rs 16,548, from their one-day salary, for the Prime Minister's Relief Fund, said Regional Manager of the bank on Saturday.

PANCHKULA
Camp

A free diabetes, anaemia detection and subsided hepatitis-B camp was organised by the regional workstation of the International Sri Geeta Ashram here on Sunday. As many as 522 persons were vaccinated against hepatitis-B. As many as 82 blood sugar samples and 114 haemoglobin samples were also analysed.

Power cuts

The HSEB seems to have imposed an undeclared cut in the power supply in the town for two to four hours daily. The power supply remains disrupted from 10 a.m. to 12 noon in some parts while it is switched off for about two hours in the evening in some other residential areas. Besides this there are frequent short duration trippings.
School closed
The government school at Bhalot village near here has allegedly been closed down by the Gram Panchayat because of unsatisfactory performance of some of the teachers posted there. According to panchayat sources the issue had been taken up with the district education authorities.

SIRSA
Arrested
The Ellenabad police arrested two persons belonging to Rajasthan on Friday and recovered a stolen jeep from their possession near Ellenabad, 40 km from here. According to informed sources, both accused, were coming after allegedly stealing a jeep from Rajasthan.
Demand
Jai Chand, spokesman of the local Kisan Sangarsh Samiti, in statement issued here on Saturday, demanded the installation of a transformer at the Ramnagaria sub-station of HSEB as farmers of the area were facing an acute shortage of power.

Killed
One person was killed and another injured seriously when they were allegedly attacked by a shopkeeper, near Indora, on Friday. The injured has been admitted to the Mukerian hospital. The police has registered a case under Sections 302 and 324 of the IPC. In another incident, Sonu (20) of Kangra committed suicide by consuming poison.


SHIMLA

Result
As many as 14,631 students out of 21,350 were declared successful in the BA II examination of Himachal Pradesh University the result of which was declared on Saturday, according to the Controller of Examinations.
