Power supply
The Consumer Movement, a voluntary organisation, on Friday, informed the Chairman and other senior officers of the PSEB that the power distribution system had suffered due to the negligence of some board employees. Mr Satpal Khariwal, chairman of the organisation, brought to their notice the plight of residents. He said complaint centres were poorly managed and the rectification of even minor faults took 10 to 12 hours. Mr Khariwal urged the Chairman to send senior officers for an on-the-spot inquiry.
Damaged
Cotton and paddy crop on several acres was damaged because of a breach caused on Friday due to the alleged negligence of the Irrigation Department. The Bharatiya Kisan Union alleged that the breach was caused in the Muktsar minor (sub-canal) on Thursday when the Irrigation Department was trying to put an additional pipe at an outlet to favour a farmer.

AMRITSAR
Recruitment camp
The next camp for youths in the 16-21 age group for recruitment to the Army and the paramilitary forces will be held here on July 27, according to the Deputy Director, Sainik Welfare Board. The duration of the camp would be six weeks.
Congress grass
The Additional Deputy Commissioner (Development), Mr Harbhupinder Singh Nanda, has called upon the voluntary organisations to help destroy congress grass. He was addressing a meeting of officers belonging to various departments here on Friday.

Injured
Two children sustained serious burns here on Thursday when a fire broke out in a godown of Subhash Glass House in the local Gurdwara Street. According to reports, a short-circuit caused the fire.

Traffic control
The Faridkot Police has deployed 53 policemen of different ranks to ensure smooth flow of traffic in the district. The policemen on duty have been asked to make the people aware of the traffic rules, said Mr S.S. Srivastava, SP (Headquarters), here on Friday.

GURDASPUR
Impounded
About 14 three-wheelers plying between Gurdaspur and Dhariwal have been impounded by the district transport authorities as per the directions of the Panjab and Haryana High Court to ban the plying of these vehicles on the G.T. Road.
Relay fast
The relay fast started by PSEB employees of Dhariwal for early payment of their arrears according to the recommendations of the pay commission entered its fifth day on Friday.

HOSHIARPUR
Administered

Punjab's Minister for Housing and Urban Development, Mr Sarup Singh, administered the oath of office to 1306 newly elected sarpanches and 688 panches of 1313 gram panchayats of 10 blocks of Hoshiarpur district at a function here on Friday.

JALALABAD
Murdered

Daulat Ram, a shopkeeper of Parbhat Singh Wala village, 6 km from here, was allegedly murdered by three persons of his village. The accused, Dana Singh, Hansa Singh and Gogi, killed him when he refused to give them anything on credit till they cleared their old dues. The Sadar police has registered a case under Section 302 and 34, IPC.

Assurance
Mr Daya Singh Sodhi, president of the state BJP, has given an assurance that the Mayor, Mr Suresh Seghal, will not be removed from his post as the allegations levelled against the Mayor were baseless.
Book released
The holy book, Sukhmani Sahib, has been translated into English, along with the translation of Gurmukhi into the Roman script by Mr Rajinder Singh Sandlas of Kapurthala. The book was released by Mr Gurcharan Singh Tohra, president, SGPC, on Thursday at Gurdwara Gangsar, Kartarpur.

MOGA
Mass leave
Work in the local Civil Hospital and all dispensaries in this district remained paralysed on Friday following the taking of one-day mass casual leave and the staging of dharnas by the doctors of the PCMS Association of this district. They protested against the indifferent attitude of the district health administration towards the death of Dr Banwarilal Arora, two days ago. The association demanded an inquiry into the circumstances leading to the death of the doctor.

Uniforms distributed
The 9 Parachute Field Regiment on Friday distributed uniforms and sports goods among 16 orphans at a special function held at Landeke village to celebrate India’s 50th year of Independence.
Encroachments: The local municipal committee demolished a large number of illegal encroachments on the G.T. Road between the office of the Deputy Commissioner and the Moga bypass. This has been done to make the town beautiful and ensure smooth flow of traffic.

Two killed
Two persons were killed in accidents on Friday. A three-wheeler driver, Ramesh, alias Meshi, a resident of Derian village, was killed in an accident near Lambra village. In another accident one cyclist, Jarnail Singh was crushed to death by a minibus near Partappura village.

Conventions

The district-level conventions of the Haryana Market Committee Fourth Class Employees Association would be held at Kurukshetra, Jind, Safidon, Hisar, Fatehabad and Yamunanagar from August 2 to 12, Mr J.P. Pandey, president of the state unit of the association, said here on Thursday.
Found
The police has found a girl, Sarvjeet (16), from Rampura who had been allegedly abducted from Tohana in this district last month by Rohrash Kumar, Deva Singh and Ram Mohan. A case has been registered.

GURGAON
Career advice
The District Employment Office will organise a career advice week for school students from July 27 to 31, according to Mr Sudhir Rajal, Additional Deputy Commissioner.
Drinking water
A sum of Rs 256.20 lakh will be spent on the backward areas of Mewat to provide drinking water in each village, of the area, according to Mr M.K. Middha, Chief Executive Officer, Mewat Development Agency.

Competition
The Forest Department here organised a painting competition on Friday to celebrate vanamahotsava. More than 1000 school children from various schools of the town participated.
Loans
The local Central Cooperative Bank would provide short-term and medium-term loans amounting to Rs 102 crore to farm and non-farm sectors in the district during the current year, Deputy Commissioner Tarun Bajaj said on Friday.

Camp
The State Bank of Patiala, Railway workshop branch, organised a blood donation camp at Kalka Gugamari village. Donors who had given blood for the ninth time were honoured on the occasion by the Chief guest, Mr R. Gupta Medical Officer at the Civil Hospital.

KURUKSHETRA
Section 144

Keeping in view the I.T.I. examinations in this district, the District Magistrate, Mr T.V.S.N. Prasad, issued an order on Friday under Section 144, Cr P.C., banning the assembly of five persons or more and the carrying of weapons within an area of about 500 metres around the examination centres. The order will remain in force till July 29.
New courses
The Vice-Chancellor of Kurukshetra University, Dr M.L. Ranga, in a press note issued here on Friday revealed that two new courses — Post-graduate Diploma in Tour and Travel Management and Certificate Course in Computer Applications — both of one-year duration, had been introduced in the Directorate of Correspondence Courses of the university.
Sentenced
The Additional District and Sessions Judge, Mr J.D. Chandna, sentenced Mangal Singh, alias Mangi and Pala Ram, both residents of Salpani Kalan village in this district, and Amar Singh, alias Kabu, a resident of Rajpur village of Hardwar in Uttar Pradesh, to 10 years' imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1 lakh for smuggling poppy husk.
Forgery
Rawinderpal Singh and Rakesh, alias Banti, both residents of Yamunanagar, have been arrested under Section 489-B, IPC, for allegedly using a forged 500 rupee note. The SSP said they had forged the note with the help of a colour photostat machine.

Project day
A two-day celebration of the annual project day of the local branch of the Bhavan Vidyalaya was held at Sector 15 here on Saturday. A quiz was also organised.
Charge assumed
Mr P.K. Aggarwal has assumed charge of Member Technical (Generation and Projects) in the HSEB in place of Mr J.L. Arora who retired recently, according to a spokesman for the board here on Saturday.
Foundation stone
The foundation stone of the Sir Chhotu Ram Dharamshala, to be constructed by the local Jat Sabha, will be laid at a site adjoining the local General Hospital in Sector 6 here on Sunday.

Registered
The police has registered a case against two residents of the town for an alleged attempt to rape a Dalit girl. According to a complaint lodged by the victim, the two accused — Rajinder of Gandhi Camp and Khairati Lal of Ganipura entered her room at about 10.30 p.m. and tried to rape her.
Seized
The police seized a new Maruti car which had forcibly been taken away by four youths from its owner on Thursday. According to the police, the car belonged to a son of an MLA. The accused were reportedly armed and had intercepted the car on a secluded road.


SIRSA
Poison

Mr Chinder Pal Singh (28), a resident of Lohgarh village in Sirsa district, died in the local Civil Hospital on Friday. The deceased had consumed a poisonous substance at his house and was brought to the hospital. He had been suffering from depression.
Attacked
Mr Diwan Chand, an employee of the Public Health Department here, saved himself by taking shelter in another room when a group of miscreants led by Balli Singh of Kariwala village opened fire at him in his office on Friday. Mr Diwan Chand, along with residents of the local M C Colony, had submitted a complaint against Balli Singh which infuriated him. A case under Section 307, IPC, and Section 25/54/59 of the Arms Act has been registered.

SONEPAT
Milk price

The Residents Welfare Association on Thursday protested against the rise in milk price by dairy owners and halwais and urged the district administration to take steps to bring it down.

BILASPUR
Memorandum
The district unit of the ABVP presented a memorandum to the Himachal Pradesh University Vice-Chancellor on Friday, demanding immediate elections to the Students Central Association, declaration of the results of examinations held more than three months ago setting up of a boys hostel and filling of the vacant posts of lecturer.
Traffic rules
A three-day campaign to create awareness about traffic rules concluded here on Thursday. It was organised by the district Police. As many as 112 vehicle drivers were challaned under various Sections of the Motor Vehicles Act. The police compounded 71 cases and realised Rs 14,850 as spot fines from the defaulters.

HAMIRPUR
Demanded

The district unit of the BJP on Friday demanded the setting up of the offices of the Divisional Commissioner and the Deputy Inspector General of Police here. This would help the people here and of Una and Bilaspur districts.


KANGRA
Killed

One person was killed on the spot and eight were injured when a three-wheeler in which they were travelling overturned near Tanda on Thursday, according to the police.
