Dental body

FARIDKOT
Traffic guidelines
The administration has taken measures regarding enforcement of traffic rules after receiving guidelines from the Punjab and Haryana High Court. According to Deputy Commissioner, Mr Gurinder Singh Grewal, the guidelines include keeping of first-aid boxes in all vehicles, removal of black films, pressure horns, musical tapes, and wearing of helmets by scooterists barring those wearing turbans.

GURDASPUR
Fast
Two PSEB employees of Dhariwal division sat on a relay fast in support of their demands, which include the payment of first instalment of arrears in view of the revised pay-scales. According to Mr Kewal Singh, a union leader, the relay fast will continue till the board accepts their demands.
Traffic rules
Mr S.K. Sandhu, Deputy Commissioner, on Wednesday said that the directions of the Punjab and Haryana High Court regarding regulation of traffic would be strictly observed in the district. Mr Sandhu said all vehicle-owners had been directed to keep first-aid material. He said a ban on the use of musical horns and red lights by unauthorised vehicles had been imposed with immediate effect. He directed the drivers and pillion riders of motor cycles and scooters to wear helmets.

JALANDHAR
Veterinary camp
As part of the ongoing celebrations for the 50th year of Independence, the Army and the Veterinary Department recently organised a veterinary camp in the premises of the local Veterinary Hospital. As many as 450 cattle were vaccinated on the occasion.
Encroachments
As per the directives of the Punjab and Haryana High Court to remove all encroachments in the town, the administration here has launched a campaign in this respect, particularly on the GT Road. Meanwhile, shopkeepers of markets of Railway Bazar, Bahamni Bazar etc have threatened to launch a stir in case of any forceful removal. The shopkeepers have sought prior notice before the removal of the encroachments.

Stir
The Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology Employees Association on Tuesday decided to intensify its stir to get the suspension order of three institute employees revoked. The president of the association, Mr Om Prakash Sharma, said it had been decided that all employees would attend office wearing black badges.
Demand
The Punjab College Librarians Association has demanded immediate release of two pending DA instalments to college-cadre librarians from July, 1997, and January, 1998, on the unrevised UGC pay-scales. The association pointed out that the Punjab Government had released two DA instalments to its employees on revised pay-scales, whereas the Haryana Government had already released two instalments of DA to its employees on the revised as well as unrevised pay-scales.
Deputation
A deputation of the local Central Mair Rajput Sabha, led by its president, Mr Harchand Singh Dilber, met the National Commission for Backward Classes at Chandigarh on July 20 and demanded the inclusion of the Swarakkar community in the list of backward classes.

PHAGWARA
Assurance
A deputation of the Punjab State Pensioners Confederation recently met Finance Minister Capt Kanwaljit Singh regarding the implementation of the recommendations of the Fourth Pay Commission for pensioners in toto. The minister assured deputationists that a notification about it would be issued soon.

SANGRUR
Oath ceremony
The newly elected panches and sarpanches of the district will be administered the oath of office on Thursday at Dhuri, 15 km from here, according to Mr Anirudh Tewari, Deputy Commissioner. Mr Madan Mohan Mittal, Minister for Food and Supplies, will administer the oath.
Visit
Dr S.K. Khullar, Civil Surgeon here, visited the flood-affected villages in Moonak subdivision of the district to supervise medical arrangements for controlling water-borne and other diseases caused by flood waters. Over a dozen villages in the subdivision have been affected by floods. Dr Khullar stated that 10 teams of doctors had been constituted to work in the flood-affected areas.

The Family Planning Association of India has cancelled the 49th foundation day function, which was scheduled to be held here at Government Senior Secondary School, Phase III-B-I, according to the association's branch manager.

Strike by students
Strike by students of Ayurvedic College, Sector 46, went on a strike here on Wednesday.The students were protesting against disaffiliation of the first-year course by Panjab University.They were also demanding recognition of their degrees by the university.
Blood donation camp
Leaders of local units of almost all political parties will participate in a blood donation camp to be organised by the Deep Complex Welfare Association on July 26 at 9 a.m. The camp is being organised in protest against the decision of the Administration to acquire land for a proposed CRPF campus.
Resigned
Mr Kehar Singh Bhatia on Tuesday tendered his resignation from the vice-presidentship of the local unit of the Janata Dal in protest against the functioning of the unit president.

FATEHABAD
Contest
An inter-school quiz contest was organised by the Parivartan Group here at Tagore Bal Niketan School on Wednesday. Twenty teams participated in the contest. The team of Daffodils Public School comprising Prateek, Simran and Harpreet bagged the first position The team of Bal Bharti Senior Secondary School comprising Vipin, Kapil and Gagandeep and the team of Maharaja Aggersain Public School consisting of Neha, Megha and Nidhi secured the second and third positions, respectively.
Opium seized
The police has seized 4 kg of opium from a local resident and arrested three persons in this connection. The police got a tip-off that two persons, Kashmira Singh of the local Sunder Nagar and Bhim Singh of Bhuthan Kalan village had kept the contraband in the house of Gopiram, a resident of Sunder Nagar. The police raided the house of Gopiram where they found the contraband. A case has been registered.
Girl recovered
The police has recovered a young girl from Rampura who had been allegedly abducted from Tohana last month. The girl's mother, in an FIR lodged with the police had alleged that three persons Rohtash Kumar, Deva Singh and Ram Mehar, had abducted her daughter. The police recovered the girl on July 17.
Arrested
The police here arrested Sham Lal, a resident of Munak and Jai Dev of Khanori village in connection with chain snatching incidents. Some golden earrings have been recovered from the two men.

The local branch of the Family Planning Association of India (FPAI) will organise an orientation training course on 'Sexual and reproductive health' at its local office here tomorrow.

Boys return
Navdeep Kumar and Naresh Kumar, two local minor boys, who had disappeared from their house a couple of days ago returned on Monday. According to sources, the boys were misguided by a rickshaw puller and taken to Bombay. The boys managed to come back with the help of a truck driver of Punjab, who brought them to Delhi.
Gang busted
The police has busted an inter-state gang involved in the supply of pistols in the area with the arrest of Akram of Uttar Pradesh who was arrested at the local bus stand on Monday. The police seized five pistols from him, which he had reportedly brought from Muzaffarnagar.

SONEPAT
Power breakdown
Normal life was paralysed and business activity disrupted on Monday when the entire town was plunged into darkness following a major power breakdown. The breakdown occurred around 8.15 p.m and the supply was restored around 2 a.m after a gap of six hours.
Two murdered
A 13-year-old girl and her relative were strangled by an unknown person at Aterna village, 25 km from here, on Tuesday night. According to a report, an unknown person forced his way into the house of the two and raped the girl who was asleep. When the girl raised a hue and cry, the aged woman relative of the girl tried to rescue her from the man but the intruder killed both of them. The police has registered a case.

YAMUNANAGAR
Vanmahotsav
The Krishi Vigyan Kendra at Damla in the district celebrated "vanmahotsav" on Monday. It organised inter-school quiz, poster and declamation contests based on forest and environment, in which about 250 students from various schools participated. Mr Rajeev Sharma, Additional Deputy Commissioner, emphasised the importance of saving forests.
Rotary Club
The following have been elected office-bearers of the local Rotary Club: president — Mr Raman Saluja; secretary - Mr Kamal Gupta and treasurer — Dr Pardeep Kohli.
Truck impounded
The District Excise and Taxation Department here has impounded a truck carrying brass scrap. The truck was reportedly not carrying the proper bill. Another truck carrying goods without the proper bill had to pay Rs 31,000 as penalty.

BILASPUR
Sisters drowned
Two sisters, aged nine and 12 years, were drowned in a cattle pond at Seedha village on Tuesday near here, when one of them tried to save the other from drowning.Reports here said these girls had taken their cattle to the village pond for bathing.

NURPUR
Case registered
The police here has registered a case against an ex-municipal councillor for allegedly abetting Satpal, a chowkidar of the local municipal council, to commit suicide. The latter died on Friday by consuming some pesticides.
