ABOHAR
Power crisis

The town faced a power crisis on Thursday due to a fault that could not be detected for 16 hours. Power supply was resumed on Friday at 4 a.m.

FAZILKA
Thefts

Thieves burgled the house of Mr Jit Sachdeva here and took away cash and jewellery on Friday. In another robbery on the same day thieves burgled another house in the same locality.

FEROZEPORE
Loudspeakers banned

The District Magistrate has banned the use of loudspeakers at a high volume and the movement of public within 50 m along the canal here. However, police Army personnel, and employees of the Irrigation Department have been exempted. He has also imposed curfew in the villages along the Indo-Pak border between 7.30 p.m. to 5.30 a.m. The orders will remain in force till August 31.

Book fair
A book fair will be held at Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Kot Kapura, for three days from July 21.


GURDASPUR
Case registered
The police has registered a case against Bholu Ram of Nagrota in Himachal Pradesh for selling plots from his land at Saili village, which had been covered under urban estate. According to rules the accused could not sell the land for plots.

HOSHIARPUR
Gramin bank

Addressing a meeting of the board of directors of the Shivalik Kashtriya Gramin Bank here on Friday, Mr Navtej Singh Puadhi, member of the National Commission of Backward Classes, said the bank had been adjudged one of the best banks by Punjab National Bank. He said the bank would continue to provide credit support to rural masses of Hoshiarpur, Ropar and Nawanshahr districts.
Bahujan Samaj Mandal
Mr Lal Singh Lali was elected president of the local unit of the Bahujan Samaj Morcha at a meeting of the district unit of the party held here on Friday.
Arrested
The Mehtiana police has arrested Baldev Singh of Mona Kalan village for reportedly riding a stolen scooter. Two more scooters were also recovered from him, according to the police.

The special mass AIDS awareness campaign launched by the Directorate of Field Publicity, north-west region, and Ministry of Information and Broadcasting concluded at Bhogpur on Friday with various functions organised at Moga, Laroya, Kurady and Binpalake villages in Bhogpur block.

A delegation of the Old Phari Market Association, Sector 22, met the Mayor on Saturday and urged him to solve their problems at the earliest. Mr P. Singh, president of the association, told the Mayor, Mr Gian Chand Gupta, said they should be provided with alternate sites to run their business.
Environment Day
The Environment Society of India organised a function to observe Environment Day at Government Senior Secondary School in Sector 6 here on Saturday. Mr Banarsi Dass, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Wildlife, Haryana, who inaugurated the function said the tree cover was detrimental to the growth of congress grass. As many as 175 tree saplings were planted in the school premises.

Cases settled

As many as 197 cases were settled at Janata Durbar here and Ferozepur Jhirka. The Deputy Commissioner directed the officers concerned to hear the consumers' complaints.

Relay fast
The Shiv Seva Samiti has converted its relay fast into an indefinite fast from Friday in protest against the demolition of the Shiv Mandir by the HUDA Department at the Red Square market here. Mr Suresh Sharma, secretary of the samiti said the agitation would continue till the construction of the temple begins.

Found

Decomposed body of an old man was recovered from a canal here on Friday. The body was sent to the local Civil Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Naujawan Sabha
A meeting of the Naujawan Sabha of Begu village in the district was held on Thursday in which it was decided to launch a cleanliness drive in the village. Repair of the link road leading to Bajekan village was also demanded by the sabha.
Arrested
Jagdish Chander of Goriwala village was arrested on Thursday under Section 377, IPC, for allegedly committing an unnatural offence with a boy of Chakjail village.
Murder

The Nathusari Chopta police on Friday registered a case under Section 302, IPC, against certain persons for the murder of Amar Singh.

Resentment
Resentment prevails among residents of this city over the release of wet sugar to the fair price shops. They urged the authorities concerned to maintain proper supply of sugar.
Installed
Mr A.K. Miglani, president of the Rotary Club Uptown and office-bearers were installed at a function held in the Rotary Centre here on Thursday. Mr Sanjeev Khanna, district governor of the club, was the chief guest.
Official suspended
The Rai police has registered a case under Section 409, IPC, against five officials of the Irrigation Department on the charge of misappropriation of public funds. The Haryana Government has placed all five officials under suspension.
Arrested
The police has arrested as many as 26 persons in this district for violating the Indian Arms Act, according to the police on Saturday. The police has also seized 18 country-made pistols, 12 cartridges, a gun and five knives from the possession of the arrested persons.
Crippled
Telegraphic services were severely affected following a major fault in the telegraphic channels here on Friday. According to official sources, a large number of booked telegrams were held up and transmitted after the defect was rectified.
