NEW DELHI,
July 17 (PTI) The Defence Ministry has frozen
retirement in the armed forces till a final decision is
taken on the issuance of a notification on the lines of
the order raising retirement age of civil servants from
58 years to 60 years, defence sources said today. The
notification would clarify if the present system of
superannuation of Chiefs of Staff at the age of 60 years
after a maximum tenure of three years would continue,
they said.Floods
affect 2.5 m
GUWAHATI,
July 17 (PTI) The flood situation in Assam
remained "critical" today with the number of
affected people rising to more than 2.5 million in 19
districts of the state, official sources said.
Seventyfive persons have so far lost their lives in the
devastating floods in the state. Fiftyone of them died in
landslides and 24 were either carried away or drowned in
the swirling waters, the sources said.
557 kids fall sick
MADURAI, July
17 (PTI) At least 557 schoolchildren fell sick
after allegedly consuming "spoilt eggs"
supplied to them at the noon meal centres in
Virudhunagar, Tirunelveli, Nagercoil and Thanjavur
districts, official sources here said. They said 410
students of six schools in Thanjavur Ammapettai,
Kumbakonam and Pattukottai complained of dizziness and
vomiting yesterday after taking eggs supplied at their
noon meal centres. Meanwhile, the government has issued
strict orders to the authorities to check the eggs before
supplying them to the students.
Thackeray case
MUMBAI, July
17 (PTI) The Mumbai High Court has admitted an
appeal filed by the Maharashtra Government against a
lower court's order which rejected its plea of
withdrawing a case against Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray
and 25 others relating to an alleged attack on the office
of the Marathi eveninger, Mahanagar, on October 27, 1991.
Hearing a revision application filed by the state
government yesterday, Mr Justice V.R. Datar granted a
stay on the proceedings until the appeal was finally
heard and disposed of. On February 18 last year, the
state government had filed an application under Section
321 of the CrPC before Additional Chief Metropolitian
Magistrate K.H. Holambe Patil, urging that the case
against Mr Thackeray and others should be withdrawn due
to lack of evidence.
No to Ram mandir
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM,
July 17 (UNI) The Kerala Assembly today
unanimously passed a resolution denouncing the move to
construct a "Ram mandir" temple at the disputed
site in Ayodhya and demanded that the Centre should
disallow any construction there till the disposal of the
case before the Supreme Court. The resolution said the
moves by the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Rashtriya
Swayamsevak Sangh to construct the temple was a violation
of the Constitution, besides being a threat to secularism
and a challenge to the judiciary.

LUCKNOW, July
17 (PTI) Newly appointed Uttar Pradesh Congress
Committee (UPCC) president Salman Khursheed has
constituted an 18-member "transition committee"
to oversee organisational works until a full-time state
executive committee is set up. Mr Khursheed finalised the
names of committee members after long consultations here
last night, party sources said today. He had dissolved
the existing executive committee soon after assuming
charge on Tuesday.
Pilgrims killed
MEERUT, July
17 (PTI) Shiva devotees torched six vehicles and
hurled stones injuring four government officials as
violence flared up after a truck ploughed through a group
of pilgrims who were asleep, killing three of them, here
today. The devotees, carrying holy water from the Ganges
at Hardwar, set on fire the jeep of a Sub-Divisional
Magistriate (SDM) on the Meerut-Paratapur road in Meerut.
