FEROZEPORE
Concern: The Secretary of the local unit of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, Mr Harish Kumar, has expressed concern over the alleged rape of a school girl by two teachers in a village in Hoshiarpur district. He demanded that the culprits should be immediately booked.

GURDASPUR
Distributed: Mr Sewa Singh Sekhwan, Minister for Public Relations and Rehabilitation, has distributed Rs 6,37,500 among 125 beneficiaries under the Shagun Scheme at a function held at Sathiali. He said Rs 20 crore had been earmarked under the scheme for this financial year.

JALALABAD
CM's announcement: The Chief Minister, Mr Parkash Singh Badal, announced an annual grant of Rs 3,000 per acre for farmers whose agricultural land falls across the fence on the Indo-Pak border. He said this while addressing a gathering at Chak Sotrian village on the occasion of the Baba Bhuman Shah mela. He also announced the setting up of a focal point at the village and the upgradation of the middle school.

KAPURTHALA
Marriages solemnised: A religious dera of Sidhwan Bet village solemnised the marriages of 10 poor girls on Sunday. The Punjab Tourism Minister, was present on the occasion and announced to give Rs 5,100 as "Shagan" to each couple.

LUDHIANA
Meeting: Office-bearers and working committee members of the Ludhiana Small-Scale Manufacturers Association held a meeting on Saturday and condemned the Central and the State Governments for their economic policies. They alleged that the present recession had caused a 40 per cent reduction in industrial production.

MOGA
Lok Adalat: A meeting of senior officers of the district here on Sunday decided to hold Lok Adalats at various places in the district. A Lok Adalat will be held here on January 16.

NAWANSHAHR
Technical education: The Technical Education and Industrial Training Minister, Dr Upinderjit Kaur, announced that Rs 226 crore had been earmarked for the spread of technical education in the state during this financial year. She said this while presiding over a prize distribution function organised by the Khalsa Sports Club and the gram panchayat of Bharapur village on Sunday.

PATHANKOT
Workshop: A six-day workshop on "Know your Army" organised by 51 Infantry Brigade for children of Sujanpur, Pathankot and Mamun concluded on Monday. As many as 200 schoolchildren participated in the workshop. The aim of the workshop was to make the children aware about life in the Army.

SANDHWANA
Eye camp: A two-day eye operation and check-up camp organised by the Gyani Zail Singh Memorial Charitable Trust on the occasion of the death anniversary of former President Zail Singh concluded here on Monday. The camp was inaugurated by the Chairman of the trust and son of Gyani Zail Singh, Mr Joginder Singh. The district Red Cross, distributed nine tri-cycles and five hearing-aids and 25 sewing machines among destitute women. top

Office-bearers: The following have been elected office-bearers of cantonment unit of the Khatri Sabha: President — Mr K.R.Puri, Senior Vice-President — Mr Anil Verma; Vice-Presidents — Mr Ravi Sehgal, Mr Praveen Sunkhija and Mr Janak Raj Oberoi; General Secretary — Mr Srikant Malhotra; Joint Secretary — Mr S.S.Nandra; and Auditor — Mr S.P.Malhotra.

BHIWANI
Demanded: The Haryana Government College Ministerial Staff Association has demanded that adequate ministerial staff should be appointed in the colleges. In a press statement issued here on Sunday, the state President of the association, Mr Krishan Sharma, said that during the past 26 years the number of students and teachers in the colleges had increased manifold but the increase in the ministerial staff had been very insignificant.

Criticised: Mr Sunil Sehrawat, President, rural unit of the Indian National Lok Dal, in a press release here on Sunday criticised the Haryana Government for not solving the people's grievances. He said the government had failed to give an impetus to development in the state.

Residents' plea: Thousands of passersby and shopkeepers on the road connecting the bus stand and the mini secretariat are facing great hardship due to the stagnating water and heaps of garbage on the road. Residents of this area on Sunday presented a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner, Mr K.S. Yadav, and demanded immediate action in this regard.

Minister's tour: Mr Ram Bhajan Aggarwal, Minister of State for Home and Tourism, on Sunday visited villages in his constituency in connection with the rally of the Chief Minister, Haryana, on January 3 at Municipal Park here.

Girl honoured: The Mewat Development Agency, Nuh, honoured Ms Savita, a teacher in Government Middle School, Khedla, at the closing ceremony of the Mewat kisan mela at Nuh. Mr Trilochan Singh, Director, HIPA, was present on the occasion.

SIRSA
Two held: Residents of Mandi Kalanwali caught two women on Saturday who were allegedly involved in cheating a local goldsmith. Later, they handed them over to the police.

Body found: Raju, a local resident, was found dead near meat market here on Saturday. He was cremated by his relatives.

Arrested: Lakhbir Singh Rajpoot of Abubshar village in this district was arrested by the Dabwali police on Saturday in a criminal case registered against him under the Arms Act. The police recovered one country-made pistol and one cartridge from his possession. The police also arrested three persons under the Gambling Act here and recovered Rs 4,050 from them.

Power shortage: Resentment prevails among residents of Mandi Kalanwali village in this district against the Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam for not supplying regular power supply to this area. The residents threaten to launch an agitation in case power supply is not normalised.

Traffic blocked: Residents of Kherpur and Gobind Nagar here blocked traffic on the national highway for two hours in protest against the stagnant rain and sewerage water in the area. The blockade was lifted on the assurance of officials concerned.

Two missing: Rohit Mehta and Sanjeev Kumar, students of Class X of a private school, has been missing since December 24.

One killed: Dalip Kaur, a resident of Mandi Dabwali, was killed in a road accident on Sunday. A case has been registered.

SONEPAT
One arrested: The Kharkhauda police has arrested Mohinder of Thana Kalan village in connection with the alleged murder of his brother, Rajinder, earlier this month, according to Mr K. Selvraj, SP, on Sunday.

Held: The CIA staff arrested Ashok of Arya Nagar here and recovered an unlicenced pistol and a cartridge from him. A case under the Arms Act has been registered against him.

Liquor seized: The Rai police seized 1,600 pouches of liquor from a car at Kundli village along the Haryana-Delhi border on Saturday. However, the occupants of the car managed to escape. A case under the Excise Act has been registered against them.top

BILASPUR
Urged: The HP State Supervising Staff Association has urged the State Government to implement the demands that had been conceded earlier and to release the joint seniority list up to December 31, 1997 so that the senior staff gets its due promotion.

JUBAL
Cheques distributed: The State Government has spent Rs 1.40 crore in this block under various schemes. Mr Ram Lal Markandey, Minister of State for Rural Development, said this while addressing a public meeting here. He also distributed cheques worth Rs 5 lakh among 113 villagers under the Gandhi Kutir Yojna and the Indira Awas Yojna. The Minister also inaugurated a camp on rural and social development.

KANGRA
Workshop: Mr R.K.Dhawan, General Secretary, All-India Congress Committee, is visiting Palampur on January 10 to attend one-day workshop of the block samitis, according to Mr G.S.Bali, Secretary of the PCC.
