LUDHIANA
Training course: The Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension and the Department of Home Science Extension Education, PAU, organised a training course on dairy farming. Thirtyfive participants were imparted training in breed improvement through cross-breeding and selection. Importance of record-keeping, management of calves, pregnant animals and treated wheat straw were discussed. An exhibition on livestock farming was also organised.

FAZILKA
Rally:
Pharmacists of Ferozepore district staged a rally at Ferozepore on Tuesday in protest against non-acceptance of their demands. The call was given by the Punjab State Pharmacists Association. Their main demands include grant of a basic scale of Rs 6,400, promotion after 4,9 and 14 years of services and medical practice rights after 10 years of service.

Citizens' council:
Mr Hari Ram Khindri and Mr Ravi Kant Jain have been elected President and General Secretary, respectively, of the local Citizens Council.

Fellowship:
Dr S.S. Bedi, Professor and Head, Department of Physics, PAU has been made life fellow of the Ultrasonic Society of India. He has also been appointed member of the Faculty of Applied Sciences, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, and an expert to serve on the Research Degree Committee in Physics at Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar University, Agra.

Bar association:
The following have been elected office-bearers of the local Bar Association : President - Mr Baldev Singh Maan; Vice-President — Mr Hardip Singh Mangat; Secretary — Mr Rajesh Rikhi; and Joint Secretary — Mr Mohammad Ayaz.

ABOHAR
Demonstration: Employees of the PSEB held demonstrations at three subdivisional offices here on Thursday under the banner of the Technical Services Union to press their demands. The rallies were addressed by senior leaders.
Condemned: The Ferozepore District Patwar Union on Thursday condemned the Deputy Commissioner for transferring senior leaders of the union.
Form shortage: Resentment prevails among students over the failure of the Education Department to provide admission forms of ETT entrance examination scheduled for January 31. The last date for submitting the forms is December 31. The students alleged that the forms had been available at a much higher price.

NAWANSHAHR
Inaugurated: The Deputy Commissioner-cum-Chairman, District Literacy Society, Dr Roshan Sunkaria, inaugurated the third phase of the on-going total literacy drive in the district at a function organised here on Wednesday. The function was attended by panches, sarpanches, teachers and officials of the various departments. The DC urged them to help the administration in making the drive successful.

JIND
Gang busted: The police here has busted a gang of dacoits with the arrest of four of its members near Narwana town. This was stated on Friday by Mr Ranbir Sharma, Superintendent of Police. Mr Sharma said the dacoits — Ramphal and Rajesh of Karsindhu village and Sajjan and Randhir of Alipur village — were arrested at a deserted factory when they were planning to commit a robbery at Hari Nagar Colony in Narwana. He said the police had seized two pistols, two knives and iron rods from the dacoits.

BHIWANI
Blankets distributed:
The Deputy Commissioner distributed woollen clothes and blankets among poor and handicapped students at a programme organised by the Red Cross Society here on Wednesday. Earlier, the DC inaugurated an exhibition organised by the disabled and mentally retarded students.

AMBALA
Car stolen:
A car belonging to Mr Ravjesh Singh, a resident of Chandigarh, was stolen near Mohra village on Wednesday. According to a complaint, the driver of the car, Ravinder Singh, gave a lift to a stranger who later offered him tea at a dhaba. The tea made the driver unconscious and the miscreant escaped with the car.

The following have been elected office-bearers of the local Senior Citizens' Association: President — Mr S.S. Nanda; Senior-Vice President — Mr Mohan Singh; Vice-President — Mr V.P. Sood; General Secretary — Mr Labh Chand Behl; and Cashier — Mr Joginder Pal.

ROHTAK
Blood donated: Forty NSS volunteers donated blood at a camp organised by the Red Cross Society at All-India Jat Heroes Memorial College here on Thursday. The Pro Vice-Chancellor of MD University, Dr L.N. Dahiya, inaugurated the camp. The next camp will be held at Meham on December 31 with the help of the Janseva Samiti.
Elected:
The HPCC Chief, Mr Bhupender Singh, and Mr Vijay Chugh were elected Patron and President, respectively, of the Petroleum Gas Upbhokta Sangh at a meeting held here on Wednesday. Mr Yash Pal Singh, Mr Hukam Chand Khokhar and Mr Anoop Saini were elected General Secretary, Vice-President and Secretary, respectively, of the sangh.

SONEPAT
Sanctioned:
The Haryana Government has sanctioned Rs 1 crore for the expansion of building and other development activities in the Motilal Nehru School of Sports at Rai in this district. Mr C.M. Mundepai, Principal-cum-Director of the school, said here on Thursday
Elected: Mr Surinder Mohan, a BJP candidate, has won the by-election to the local Municipal Council by defeating the Congress candidate, Mr Parveen. The election was held on account of the death of the BJP Councillor, Hans Raj Bhutani.
Protest:
The Bus Commuters Welfare Association on Wednesday protested against the non-plying of Haryana Roadways buses on the Sonepat-Gohana route on schedule and urged the General Manager of the local depot to take stern action against the defaulters.
Sarpanch's body found: The Ganaur police recovered the body of Zile Singh (50), a sarpanch of Garhi Jhinjhara village, from the fields on Thursday. The police has registered a case and sent the body for post-mortem examination.
Body found: The Rai police recovered the body of an unidentified woman from G.T. Road near Qumashpur village on Thursday. A case has been registered in this connection.
Burnt to death: A 24-year-old housewife, Anita, was allegedly burnt to death at her house at Baguru village on Thursday. The police is investigating the case.
Killed: Ramesh (45), a resident of Harsana Kalan village was run over by a train at the railway station here on Thursday.

BILASPUR
Bandh observed: Shopkeepers observed a one-day bandh at Barmana, 18 km from here, on Thursday in protest against the "failure" of the government and the ACC factory management to take effective steps for controlling pollution. Led by the local Zila Parishad member Bhagat Singh Verma and Beopar Mandal president Sitaram Mahajan, the shopkeepers held a rally and warned that they would block vehicular traffic on the national highway if their demands were not accepted within a week. Later, a memorandum was submitted to the Deputy Commissioner.
Eye camps: Government mobile eye units will hold free eye check-up and operation camps at Chhadole from January 2 to 6, at Markand from January 8 to 12, at Jhaddutta from January 19 to 23 and at Talai from January 30 to February 3 in this district, the Chief Medical Officer, Dr M.L. Mahajan, said here on Thursday.

SUNDERNAGAR
Cases settled: A camp "prashasan janta ke dwar" was held on Thursday at Tihari under gram panchayat Ghanghnoo. As many as 66 cases were disposed of on the spot on the occasion. The camp was headed by Mr Vijay Chander, Subdivisional Magistrate.

MANALI
Burnt to death: Ringzin (65) was burnt to death and Digo was injured when a house was gutted by a fire that broke out in Samahn village, on the Manali-Rohtang road, 1 km from here, on Thursday. Two fire-engines were rushed to the spot and control the fire. The cause of the fire was not known.
