AMRITSAR

Nominated: Mr Daya Singh Sodhi, MP, Prof Jagir Singh Valtoha, President of the BJP, Punjab and an MLA (Amritsar district), and Mr Tarlochan Singh, Chairman, Tourism, New Delhi, have been nominated to the syndicate of Guru Nanak Dev University till June 30, 1999. This was stated by Dr R.S. Bawa, Registrar of the University, here on Wednesday.
Orphan girls: Mr Narinderjit Singh, Deputy Commissioner, distributed shawls and woollen garments on Wednesday among 11 orphan girls living in the short stay home at the local Nari Niketan. Besides food and clothing, technical education was also being given to the girls living there.

Sales tax: Mr Kewal Krishan Aggarwal, General Secretary, DCC (I) on Wednesday condemned the SAD-BJP government in Punjab for imposing 5 per cent sales tax on halwais and bakery owners. In a press note issued here, he alleged that the state government was anti-traders.

GURDASPUR

Credit cards: As many as 50 farmers were issued credit cards under the credit card scheme by the Punjab and Sind Bank management to help the farmers sow their crops in time without any financial worry. The cards were issued at a function held here on Thursday.

HOSHIARPUR

Dowry case: On a complaint of Ms Naresh Kumari of Lambra village, the police has registered a case under Sections 498 A, 506, 323 and 34, IPC, against her husband, Constable Lakhwinder Singh, her father-in-law and mother-in-law, all residents of Shehbazpur and has arrested them. According to Mr R.P. Mittal, SSP, the complainant was being tortured for bringing inadequate dowry.

Passports: The applications received for passports at the passport office here up to serial number 402/82659/98 till September 17 have been processed and the passports dispatched to the persons concerned whose applications were complete in all respects.

KHARAR

Dharna: Workers of the Panipat Woollen Mills and Kharar Textile Mills staged a dharna here on Wednesday in protest against the failure of the managements to pay the alleged illegal deduction of Rs 60 per month for the past 42 months.

MALERKOTLA

Paddy problem: A seminar on the problems of paddy milling in Punjab, its root cause, solution and consequent gains will be organised by the Sangrur District Industrial Chamber at Singla Palace, Sangrur, on Friday. According to Mr A R Sharma, Vice-President of the Chamber, Mr Surjit Singh Barnala , Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilisers, will be the chief guest.
Bar association: The following have been elected office-bearers of Malerkotla Bar Association: president - Mr Baldev Singh Mann; Vice-President - Mr Hardeep Singh Mangat; Secretary - Mr Rajesh Rikhi and Joint Secretary - Mr Mohammand Ayaz.
Honoured: Dr Pritam Singh, a writer, will be awarded the Dass Ram Doshi award by the Punjabi Sahit Sabha here at a function to be organised on Sunday at the local Government College. Mrs Parkash Kaur Hamdard will be the chief guest.

PATIALA

Taken over: Dr D.C. Sharma, a senior Medical Officer, has taken over as the health officer of the Municipal Corporation here. Dr Sharma is the General Secretary of the Punjab Civil Medical Service (PCMS) Association.
Anomalies: Harjit Singh Sethi, General Secretary, PSEB Substation Staff Technical Union in a statement issued here on Wednesday criticised the board for not removing anomalies of the substation staff. He said the board had also ignored the shift and risk allowances of the staff.
Tributes paid: Tributes were paid to former Punjab Public Service Commission Chairman Amarjit Singh at a function organised by the Punjabi Vikas Manch here. Sweaters were distributed among needy children on the occasion.
Demanded: The Punjab Nurses Association has demanded the scrapping of the screening test for the recruitment of nurses to be conducted by the Subordinate Services Selection Board on December 28. Ms Jeewanpreet Kaur, President of the association, in a statement issued here on Wednesday said nurses should be appointed on seniority and merit only.

FATEHABAD

Annual function: The Haryana Minister of State for Medical Education, Mr Vinod Marya, has asked the school teachers to work for the all round development of children. He was speaking at the annual function of the local Springbells Foundation Public School here on Tuesday.

GURGAON

Lions club: The Lions Club, Sohna, on the occasion of "saptrishi" festival distributed 22 tricycles, three wheelchairs and 80 other equipments to handicapped persons at a function in Sohna.

Case registered: The district police on Tuesday arrested Naresh and Dharamvir for allegedly possessing opium. A case has been registered.

ROHTAK

Anti-employee policies: The Haryana Electricity Board Workers Union has alleged that the "anti-employee" policies of the state government have been forcing several employees of the HSEB to seek voluntary retirement. The members said that the government was doing this to make indirect retrenchment easier.

SIRSA

Blood donation camp: A four-day blood donation camp was organised by the Yuva Raktdaan Society, Mandi Dabwali, in memory of the fire victims of Mandi Dabwali. The district Red Cross Society, Vishvas Nirankari Mission Dera, Saccha Sauda, Nehru Yuva kendra, Sirsa and many other social organisations were also extending cooperation.
Injured: Jalu (14) a labourer at a brick kiln, was seriously injured in an accident near Rangri village in the district on Wednesday. According to informed sources, he was hit by a bus when he was going for his duty.
Arrested: Mahabir Bishnoi, Shib Ram and four other persons of Abubshar village in the district were arrested by the Dabwali police on Wednesday under Sections 25,54 and 59 of the Arms Act on a complaint of Gurmeet Singh, a student of the same village, who was seriously injured by the accused on December 7.

SONEPAT

Campaign: Mr S.K. Handa, Superintending Engineer of the Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam (HVPN) said here on Wednesday that officials of the nigam had recovered Rs 55.43 lakh during a three-week campaign, despite resistance by a large number of defaulters. Power supply connections of 1,891 consumers were cut-off against whom arrears totalling Rs 55.20 lakh were still standing.
Lok Adalat: As many as 243 cases were settled at a Lok Adalat held at the district courts' building here on Tuesday. The District and Sessions Judge, Mr V.P. Chaudhry, presided.
Arrested: The anti-crime branch of the police on Wednesday claimed to have arrested a criminal, Rohtas, involved in a number of cases such as murders, assaults and loot etc., and recovered a country-made pistol, a cartridge and a stolen car from him.

YAMUNANAGAR

Injured: Three persons, including a pregnant woman, were seriously injured when they were attacked by some miscreants at Jagadhri on Tuesday. According to sources, the miscreants entered the house of Mr Mewa Singh for looting purposes.
Award: Dr Anil Aggarwal, a local surgeon, has been awarded the National Medical Excellence award for 1998 for his meritorious services in the field of surgery. The award was presented by Ms Maneka Gandhi, Union Environment Minister, at a function held at the Andhra Auditorium, New Delhi, on Tuesday.

Illicit liquor: A police party of Kot police station raided the premises of Gurmeet Singh at Majari village 80 km from here, on Tuesday and recovered 35,000 ml of illicit liquor which was hidden by them in fields. A case under the Excise Act has been registered.

JWALAMUKHI

Crushed to death: Roshini Devi, an octogenarian, was crushed to death by a tempo near Bohan village on the Hoshiarpur-Jwalamukhi road on Wednesday. The driver has absconded. A case has been registered.top
