AMRITSAR
Eye camp:
The Jan Seva Medical and Eye Relief Society organised a free eye check-up camp at Gurunanakpura here on Thursday. A team of surgeons examined over 250 patients and provided medicines free of cost.
Elected: The following have been elected office-bearers of the MES Contractors Union: President — Mr Subash Chander; and General Secretary — Mr Kuldip Singh.

FAZILKA
Killed:
Navdeep Singh (17) was killed on the spot when the scooter he was riding was hit by a truck at Beganwali village, 7 km from here, on Thursday on the Fazilka-Abohar road. His companion Sukhdev Singh was injured in the mishap. Navdeep was a resident of Ramkot village. The truck driver fled after the accident. The police has registered a case.

JALANDHAR
NIC centre:
The second NIC Information Technology Centre in the state was inaugurated by the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Som Parkash, here on Thursday. Jalandhar is second city after Amritsar to get this facility.
Demonstration held:
A demonstration was organised here on Thursday in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner against the Punjab Urban Development Authority's alleged attempt to evict several hut dwellers from near the new tehsil complex. It was led by the Samata Party state general secretary, Mr Arun Sharma Pappu. Later, a memorandum was submitted to the Deputy Commissioner.
Doctor suspended:
Dr J.S Bath, Medical Officer, Civil Hospital, Phillaur, has been suspended and shifted to Bhatinda headquarter. The doctor had been reportedly involved in a controversy regarding the theft of a new-born baby from a private hospital at Phillaur.

PATHANKOT
March organised: 
An all-religion Khalsa Panth march reached Madhopur on Friday. It was welcomed by Mr Sucha Singh Langah, Industry Minister of Punjab.

PATIALA
Inaugurated:
Punjab Finance Minister Capt Kanwaljit Singh inaugurated a 66-kv substation of the Punjab State Electricity Board at Handesra, near here, on Thursday.

PHILLAUR
Money snatched:
Three car-borne miscreants snatched Rs 12,000 from Mr Surinderjit Singh who was on his way to Ludhiana on Wednesday evening.

ROPAR
Charge taken:
Mr Jaskaran Singh took over as Senior Superintendent of Police here in place of Mr Ranbir Singh Khatra who has gone to Chandigarh as AIG, Provisioning and Transport.

Beauty pageant: A beauty pageant called the Miss Unique North '98 will be held at the Tagore Theatre on December 27. A press note of the organisers said the winners will be given cash prizes and trophies.
Indo-US programme:
The first international level Indo-US Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme on 'Stop aging now' will open at the IMTECH here in Sector 39 on Saturday. The conference is being organised by the alumni of the Government Medical College (GOMCO) Patiala. Foreign and Indian delegates from the PGI and AIIMS will attend, a press note of the organisers said.
FIP convention:
The four-day 19th convention of the Federation of Indian Photography (FIP) being organised by the Photographic Society of Chandigarh and the UT Administration will be inaugurated by Mr Waman Thakre, president of the FIP, on December 25 at the Sector 10 Art Gallery here. The convener, Mr Navneet Saxena, said the aim of the convention was to project the city as a 'Tourist Paradise'.

BHIWANI
Employees' meeting:
A meeting of employees of the Haryana Roadways Union (affiliated with the Haryana Karamchari Maha Sangh) was held here on Wednesday. The meeting rejected the institution of the Joint Consultative Committee by the Haryana Government in the present form and demanded that the deliberations of the committee should be made binding on the government to make it acceptable to the employees.

FATEHABAD
Cultural function:
A cultural programme was organised by the Fateh-Dhwaj, a police-public coordination forum, here on Wednesday. The role of Fateh-Dhwaj in bringing the police and the public close was appreciated on the occasion.
Arrested:
The mother-in-law and two sisters-in-law of a Dalit woman have been arrested for allegedly harassing the latter for bringing insufficient dowry. Ms Ragni, a resident of the local Inderpura locality, has in a complaint with the police alleged that her husband, brothers-in-law, and sister-in-law, used to harass her for bringing insufficient dowry and for not allowing her to enter the kitchen, saying that she belonged to a lower caste. She also alleged that her in-laws beat her up and threw her out of the house.

JIND
Blood donated:
As many as 89 persons donated blood at a camp organised by the District Red Cross Society here on Thursday. Mr Tarun Bajaj, Deputy Commissioner, inaugurated the camp. He said so far 802 persons had donated blood at various blood donation camps organised by the society in 1998.
Licence cancelled:
The Food and Supplies Department here cancelled the licences of two ration depots in the district during the current month for various irregularities. The department also forfeited security deposits of 13 ration depot holders due to irregularities in their working.

SIRSA
Injured:
Ms Guli Devi, widow of Lilu Ram Ahir of Darbi village, near here, and her daughter Nirmal Devi, were seriously injured when they were allegedly attacked by Tara Chand, his son Biru Ram, and grandson Raj Kumar at the village on Wednesday. A case has been registered.
Held: Seema Kumari, a minor girl of Abohar, along with her alleged lover Hardeep were arrested from Chatargarh Patti, near here, by the police on Wednesday. According to sources, Hardeep had allegedly abducted the girl from Abohar. The matter has been reported to the Punjab Police.
Meeting:
A meeting of the Sirsa District Review and Consultation Samiti, organised here under the chairmanship of Dr Avtar Singh, Deputy Commissioner, on Wednesday discussed the functioning of banks in the district during the past three months. Dr Chopra urged bankers to help farmers. He also appealed to them to help small-scale industries and rural industries in the district.
Bail petition:
The bail petition of Mr Harbajan Singh, an employee of the Haryana State Vidyut Nigam, who was on strike on December 11 has been turned down under the ESMA. The strike call had been given by various trade unions. He has been sent to judicial custody till December 27.
Liquor seized: The police here seized 50 kg lahan and five bottles of liquor from Chotta Singh Ram Chander in the district on Thursday. The police also seized one working still from Pappu of Melakanion village.

SONEPAT
Protest:
A joint meeting of various government employees' unions and the trade unions was held here on Wednesday to register their protest against the arrest of employees under ESMA and their sacking from service by the state government.
Arrested: The police here arrested Ashwani, alias Sonu, of Pehladpur Kiroli village on Thursday. He is reported to be a member of an inter-state gang of car thieves operating in parts of Haryana and Delhi.

YAMUNANAGAR
Blood donation camp:
A blood donation camp and a prize distribution function were organised here on Wednesday. Mr Narender Singh, Sub-Divisional Magistrate, was the chief guest on the occasion. He gave away prizes to 146 blood donors. Mr Singh emphasised the importance of voluntary blood donation.

JAWALAMUKHI
House raided:
The house of Ms Veena Sharma, state president of the Himachal Vikas Congress (women wing), was raided by the Forest Department on Thursday. Huge quality of timber was reportedly seized from the house. A case has been registered by the Forest Department against Ms Roshani Devi, mother-in-law of Ms Veena Sharma.
Cremated: A police constable Sanjiv Kumar was cremated here on Thursday. Sanjeev Kumar was a trainee at the Police Trainee Centre, Daroh, near Palampur. His rifle had gone off accidentally during an examination.

SOLAN
Elected:
Mr Jangi Lal, a BJP activist, was elected vice-president of the local municipal council here on Wednesday. He succeeds Mr Sohan Singh Jhina who was removed from the post after a no-confidence motion was passed against him on December 5.
