FEROZEPORE
Caught: An Assistant Registrar of the Cooperative Societies, Zira, Mr M.P. Singh, was caught red-handed by the Vigilance Bureau on Friday while accepting a bribe of Rs 2,500 from Mr Jagdev Singh, a resident of Dhanna Shaheed village.

GURDASPUR
Schemes for farmers: Thakur Bidhi Chand, Additional Deputy Commissioner, while presiding over a meeting of the Agriculture Production Committee here on Saturday said small farmers would be given nine small tractors by a draw of lots, at a subsidy of Rs 30,000 each. He said as much as 2.01 lakh hectares of land had been brought under wheat cultivation against a target of 1.95 lakh hectares in this regard and about 3600 quintals of certified seed of high yielding variety of wheat had been distributed among farmers.

LUDHIANA
Condemned: The Punjab Students Union has condemned the lathi charge on the students of Punjabi University at Patiala who were protesting against the hike in college fees by the university. Mr Rupinder Singh, General Secretary of the union, alleged that the university had commercialised education by raising the fees.

MOGA
Resentment: Resentment prevails among local consumers over the directive of the Civil Supply Department to government fair price shop owners to stop supply of kerosene to the consumers having cooking gas connections. The consumers alleged that there was an acute shortage of kerosene in the town.
Demands:
A meeting of the Baghapurana Action Committee was held at Baghapurana on Sunday. Mr Balwant Singh Brar, an advocate, urged the authorities to remove the statue of Sardar Bhagat Singh from the main road crossing of the town to ease traffic congestion to construct a complex for the government offices in the town, to set up new grain market for farmers and toilets at suitable places.
Traffic blocked: Traffic between Moga and Kotkapura remained suspended on Saturday evening for about two hours following a clash between transporters, truck owners and passengers. Hundreds of passengers were stranded. The traffic was diverted through link roads passing through various villages.

PHILLAUR
Millers association: A meeting of the 21-member executive body of the Punjab Rice Millers Association was held at Kisan Bhavan on Saturday. Mr Bhagirthlal (Bareta) was elected the Chairman and Mr Tarsem Saini (Patiala) President of the association at the meeting. The association represents more than 2,500 rice millers of the state.

ROPAR
Distributed: Eleven sewing machines were distributed among needy women by the local Maha Mai Shree Naina Devi Mandal at a religious programme organised by it in the Old Market Committee Complex here on Saturday. Mr Madan Mohan Mittal, Punjab Food and Supplies Minister, was also present on the occasion.
PSEB pensioners: The PSEB pensioners, drawing pension from the local PSEB operation division, are dissatisfied with the work of the field officers. Mr Raghbir Singh Saini, General Secretary of the PSEB Pensioners Welfare Association, here said pension on revised rates had been paid to them only for this month and arrears of revised pension from January 1996 to October 1998 had not been paid so far. He demanded action against the officials concerned and payment of interest on the outstanding amount to all pensioners.

Sixty three persons donated blood at a camp organised by the Sahibzada Social Welfare Society here on Sunday. Dr Puran Singh Jassi, Director, Health Services, Punjab, was the chief guest at the camp organised for those injured in the recent rail tragedy near Khanna.

BHIWANI
Medical camp: A medical camp was organised for pregnant women of the slum areas here on Sunday at Krishna Nagar colony by the district unit of the Indian Medical Association. The President of the unit, Dr Karan Punia, said about 100 pregnant women were examined and iron, B-complex and calcium tablets were given to them free of cost.
Doctor fined: The district Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum here has imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on a doctor of Charkhi Dadri. The doctor will have to pay Rs 1,100 as the expenses of the litigation. Mr Jage Ram, a resident of Saman village in tehsil Meham, had registered a complaint against the doctor who operated on him without administering the compulsory investigations and because of this the patient had to undergo two more operations and he spent around Rs 1.25 lakh on treatment.
Campaign against unemployment: A statewide "Remove unemployment and enhance allowance" drive would be launched by the Haryana Chhattra Kalyan Parishad. The President of the parishad, Mr Verender Kaushik, would launch the campaign by observing a token fast on December 19.
Leaders released: The Chief Judicial Magistrate released on Saturday all 19 employee leaders, arrested under Section 188, of the IPC, during the strike on Friday, on bail.
Course for cops: A six-day research and training course for the junior police officers of Hisar Range concluded here on Sunday. The participating officers were given orientation in all relevant areas of their duties and functions to enable them to do their job with utmost efficiency and win confidence of the general public.

FATEHABAD
Open darbar: The weekly open darbars being organised by the administration at the district headquarters will now be organised at the block level. The Deputy Commissioner, Mr V. Raja Shekhar said the decision was taken for the convenience of the public. He said an open darbar would be organised at Ratia on December 16.

JIND
Poultry market: The state unit of the Indian Poultry Farmers Welfare Association at a meeting here on Sunday demanded that basic facilities should be provided in the poultry market recently developed by the Haryana government at Bahalgarh Chowk near Sonepat. Mr Dilbagh Singh, president of the state unit of the association , said there was no arrangement of shed, slaughter house, pucca shops and drinking water in the market.
Snatched: Two youths snatched a bag containing Rs 7,000 from a salesman, Mr Krishan Lal, in Geeta Colony here on Friday. The two fled on a motor cycle after snatching the bag.
Power theft:
During a recent campaign against power theft 118 cases were detected in the district. Mr Tarun Bajaj, Deputy Commissioner, said on Saturday that penalty of about Rs 13 lakh was imposed on the guilty in these cases. Besides, cases had been registered against 28 consumers in the district, he added.

KARNAL
Convocation: The annual convocation of the local Kumari Vidya Vati Anand DAV College for Women was held on Saturday. Dr M.L. Ranga, Vice-Chancellor of Kurukshetra University, delivered the convocation address. As many as 350 graduates from different faculties received degrees on the occasion.

PANIPAT
Criticised: The Kisan Sabha criticised the state government on Sunday for its failure to make DAP fertiliser available to the farmers during sowing season. The President of the Sabha, Mr Surat Singh, described the Bansi Lal government as anti- farmer.
Sentenced: The Additional Sessions Judge, Mr B.K.Aggarwal, has sentenced Subhash and Rajender to 10 and three years imprisonment, respectively, in a dowry death case.
Bail granted: The Senior Sub Judge, Mr D.S.Sheoran, granted bail to Mr Jagdev Malik, former chairman of the Haryana Handloom Apex who had been arrested for manhandling the HVPN SDO of Chhajpur. Mr Malik said in a press conference on Saturday that the agitation against "corrupt and" "dishonest" officials would continue.

SIRSA
Bodies found: Decomposed bodies of Mrs Kamlesh Rani (35) and her daughter Priya (4) were recovered from Indira Gandhi Canal near Tibbi in Rajasthan on Saturday. She had allegedly committed suicide along with her two daughters. The body of her second daughter, Pooja (11), has not been found so far.

SONEPAT
Gang busted: The Sadar police has reportedly busted a gang of highway robbers with the arrest of two persons. The SP, Mr K. Selvraj, told mediapersons here on Sunday that the arrested persons had been identified as Rajbir and Mohinder, residents of Thaha Khurd village in the district. The police also recovered an unlicensed pistol and a khukhri from them.
Intercepted: The Rai police intercepted a truck carrying 16 bulls near Jagdishpur village in the district and foiled an attempt by two persons to smuggle the bulls to UP. According to the police, the arrested persons had been identified as Dharam Singh and Akhan Banjans.
Car thief arrested: The Khark-hauda police arrested Ashwani, alias Sonu, of Pahladpur Kiroli village in the district on Sunday. He was involved in various car thefts in the region. A stolen car was recovered from him. He told the police that the car seized by the police had been stolen from the Rohni area of Delhi about 10 days ago.
