Strike hits life in many states
NEW DELHI, Dec 11 — Life was affected, banking services came to a standstill, train services were disrupted and industrial activity was hit in a large number of states by the one-day general strike called by the National Platform of Mass Organisations in protest against the economic policies of the BJP-led coalition government.

Women's Bill stalled again; Mamata clashes with MPs
NEW DELHI, Dec 11 — The BJP-led coalition Government’s renewed attempt to introduce the Women’s Reservation Bill in Parliament today came a cropper with the Rashtriya Janata Dal and the Samajwadi Party members vehemently opposing the move and forcing adjournment of the Lok Sabha for the day.

Sayeed to be Deputy Speaker
NEW DELHI, Dec 11 — Confronted with stiff opposition to its candidate for the post of the Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker from within its allies, the BJP-led coalition government today decided to withdraw from the contest paving the way for the unanimous election of the Congress candidate, Mr P.M. Sayeed, to the post.

MUMBAI, Dec 11 — Famous poet-lyricist Kavi Pradeep, whose song 'Ae mere watan ke logon' brought tears to the eyes of the country’s first Prime Minister Pt Jawaharlal Nehru, in the early ’60s in the wake of the Chinese aggression, died here this evening.
