FATEHGARH SAHIB

Eye camp: The Bharat Vikas Parishad, Sirhind, organised a free eye check-up camp at Sirhind on Saturday. Mr P.L. Goyal, Civil Surgeon, inaugurated the camp. As many as 500 patients were examined and 100 operations performed by a team of doctors from Rajindra Hospital, Patiala.

HOSHIARPUR

Raising Day celebrated: Raising Day of the Punjab Home Guards and Civil Defence was celebrated at police line here on Sunday. Mr Iqbal Singh, Deputy Commissioner, unfurled the flag and took the salute at an impressive parade by jawans. He appreciated the role of jawans in maintaining the peace and harmony in the state.
Threat: Mr Pawan Kumar Gupta, president, Punjab Shiv Sena (Bal Thakeray), told mediapersons here on Sunday that the Shiv Sena would not allow the Pakistan cricket team to play any match at SAS Nagar or anywhere else in the state.

PATIALA

Strike: The Northern Zone Insurance Employees Association met here on Saturday under the presidentship of Mr Narinder Walia and unanimously decided to observe a strike on December 11 in protest against the attempt to privatise the insurance sector.
Camp: A three-day yoga health and service camp was organised by the Ananda Marga Seva Dal at Dakala near here. As many as 250 youths of Patiala, Dakala, Bathohi, Karhari, Tanayan, Duddhar and the adjoining areas attended it.
Elected: Ms Satwant Kaur Sandhu and Ms Balwant Kaur Arora have been elected president and secretary, respectively, of the local Innerwheel Club here.
Diabetes camp: The Lions Club (Qila Mubarak) here organised a diabetes awareness camp. A talk on diabetes was delivered by Dr Raghuvansh Kumar of Government Medical College, Patiala. A film show on diabetes was also organised by Mr R.S. Pahuja.

Training the youths: The Commonwealth Youth Programme: Asia centre, will conduct six day training programme on "Youth Entrepreneurship and Economic Development" from Monday for the participants nominated by the Rajiv Gandhi National Institute of Youth Development, Chennai. The participants are Trainers and Programme Officers of the central and state governments and also from NGOs that develop training skill in youth for economic development and resource mobilisation.top

AMBALA

Bhog: The bhog of the akhand path held in memory of those killed in the railway accident near Khanna recently was performed here today at the Gurdwara Singh Sabha at Old Railway Colony in cantonment. The path was started on December 4 and was organised by the families of the railway employees here. About 500 persons attended the path today.

FATEHABAD

Function: International Volunteers Day was celebrated in the local Manohar Memorial College on Saturday. The Deputy Commissioner, Mr V. Raja Shekhar, presided over the function. Later, he flagged off a cross country race.

SIRSA

One arrested: Dildar Singh, alias Sonu, of Railway Colony, Amritsar, was arrested from JJ Colony here and a stolen car recovered from his possession, Mr B.S. Sandhu, SSP, said here on Sunday.
Loans distributed: The local Haryana Harijan Kalyan Nigam has provided financial help to 29 Scheduled Caste persons of this district under various schemes of the nigam, Dr Avtar Singh, Deputy Commissioner, said here on Sunday.
Road mishap: Jeet Singh (40), a local resident, was killed and Madan Lal injured when the jeep in which they were travelling collided with a canter near Darba village on Saturday. A case has been registered.
Staff shortage: Government Senior Secondary School, Rania, is facing an acute shortage of teachers in the school. Students allege that the post of geography teacher has been lying vacant for the past four years.
Poor sewerage: Resentment prevails among residents of the local Agarsain Colony against the Public Health Department for not maintaining sewerage system. Members of the Agrasain Colony Sudhar Samiti in a complaint allege that the system had collapsed and the authorities concerned were silent on the issue.
One killed: Manoj Kumar (20), a local resident, was killed in a road accident near Air Force Station when his autorickshaw was hit by a tractor-trailer on Saturday.
Road accidents: Milak Raj, a class IV employee of the Health Department, posted at Panjuwana village was killed on the spot in a road accident near Khairkan village on Friday. A case has been registered. In another accident, an unidentified person was killed near Anaj Mandi, Ellenabad, on Friday. The body was sent to the Civil Hospital, Ellenabad.
Pistol seized: The police seized a pistol from the possession of Balbir Singh of Firozabad village at Rania bus stand on Friday, Mr B.S. Sandhu, SSP, said here on Saturday. The police also arrested four persons under the Gambling Act from various places of this district on Friday.

Paper reading contest: The Samriti Society and the Department of Computer Science and Application of Guru Nanak Girls College, Santpura, organised an inter-college paper reading contest on Saturday. As many as eight college teams participated in the contest. Ms Anmol of the local Guru Nanak Khalsa College, Ms Rashi Tyagi, of Guru Nanak Girls College, Santpura, and Mr Yogeshwar of the local Guru Nanak Khalsa Institute of Management and Technology, secured first, second and third positions, respectively.

BILASPUR

Accident: Lalman, a driver of the District Education Officer, was seriously injured when his van was involved in a road accident near Dholera Temple on Friday. Two of the others occupants of the vehicle sustained minor injuries. The police has registered a case.
Expelled: The HP State Ex-servicemen Truck Union, Barmana, has expressed no-confidence in the leadership of its president, Mr Ram Singh. The union executive committee has also expelled him and appointed vice-president Ramesh Kumar Thakur in his place.

CHAMBA

Bridge construction: The Deputy Commissioner, Mr K. Sanjaymurti, has directed the authorities of the Public Works Department to construct the bailey bridge at Gehra on the Chamba-Bharmour highway by December 25 in place of an old concrete bridge which was damaged by a flash flood in the Gehra nullah in the rain in October.
Inquiry demanded: The essential commodities, which were being supplied to the Pangi tribal valley of this district, in October were found rotten at Chori Bangla, Sidhmandir and Raoli. In a memorandum submitted to the Himachal Chief Minister, residents of the Bharmour-Pangi tribal constituency have demanded an inquiry into the negligence of the authorities concerned .

KULU

Murdered: Sanjeev Kumar (23) of Sultanpur was murdered near Bhootnath Temple here on Friday. Shops of Akhara Bazar, Sultanpur, Sarwari, Dhalpur and Shashtri Nagar remained closed on Saturday in protest against the deteriorating law and order situation in the district.

MANDI

Case registered: Kartar Singh (36), Inspector (works), PWD, was killed in a clash at a wedding ceremony of Mr Govind Ram's daughter in Sainthal village in Jogindernagar subdivision on Friday. He was rushed to the Civil Hospital, Jogindernagar, where he was declared brought dead by doctors. The police has registered a case and arrested two persons in this connection.

NAHAN

Dead: Yograj Singh (76), a former chairman of the Nahan Block Samiti, died here on Saturday. He was cremated on the same day.
Eye camp: The local Hiteshi Service Society will organise a free eye camp at Gurdwara Taragarhi Bhangani from December 9 to 13, Mr Rakesh Kaushal, Deputy Commissioner, said here on Saturday.

SUNDERNAGAR

Function: Mr Roop Singh Thakur, Forest Minister, presided over the function of Senior Secondary School, Jarol, on Sunday, and sanctioned Rs 3 lakh for the school building.top
