Book released: Renowned eye specialist and eminent Punjabi poet, Dr Daljit Singh's book on Punjabi poetry was released by Dr H.S. Soch, Vice-Chancellor of Guru Nanak Dev University, at the university here on Monday.

BATALA

Gang busted: The Qadian police busted a gang of thieves and recovered stolen cash within 10 hours of the theft, Mr L.K. Nath, chief of the Batala police district told mediapersons here on Monday. The gang broke into a local college on Saturday and took away Rs 3400. The same night the miscreants stole gold ornaments and cash from two religious places. The leader of this gang, was Gurpreet Singh, alias Kittu of Manpur village in Hoshiarpur district, an ex-student of the Sikh National College, Qadian. An FIR was lodged and a case under sections 457 and 380, IPC, was registered.

JALALABAD

Protest leave: The protest leave by revenue patwaris of Ferozepore district entered the 13th day on here Monday. This has hit the judicial work in the town. Mr Vinder Jindal, a local advocate, has said that in absence of documents relating to revenue records to be issued by employees on strike, a number of cases were likely to be time barred. The employees are on leave in support of their demands which include amendment in the seniority list and the issue of selection grade.

LUDHIANA

Honoured: Gurbachan Singh Gill, noted Punjabi poet and editor, communication centre, PAU, has been selected for the Bawa Balwant Award for his contribution in the field of poetry while Dr Joginder Singh Nirala has been honoured with the Balraj Sahni Award by the Sahit Trust, Dhudike, Mr Jaswant Singh Kanwal, chairman of the trust, said on Monday.

MALERKOTLA

Gamblers held: A group of 10 gamblers — Aalu, Tej, Ashok, Bhili, Makhan, Sunil, all residents of Dhuri; Subhash of Ahmedgarh; Mohammad Mustaq and Mohammad Nazir of Malerkotla; and Mohammad Ishaq (Pehlwan) the ring leaders of the group — were arrested by the local CIA staff while gambling near the Idgah here on Sunday. According to CIA Inspector Gurdeep Singh, Rs 15,365 in cash was recovered from them. A case under the gambling Act has been registered. Later, they were released on bail.

PATHANKOT

Declamation contest: The local State Bank of Patiala in collaboration with the Institute of Ecology and Environment organised an inter-college declamation contest on environment at SD College on Monday. Participants drawn from all over the district spoke on environment preservation.

Elected: The following have been elected office-bearers of the local Rotary Club President — Mr Virinder Kukreja; secretary — Mr Meeta Kukreja and treasurer — Mr Ajay Seth.
Shifted: The Haryana Government Pensioners Welfare Association has shifted their office from Old Sabzi Mandi to Gobind Ashram, Swargdham Marg, Rajpura Road, according to a press release of the association here on Monday.
Eye check-up: The local Lions Club (Bahadurgarh) organised a free eye check up and operation camp at Daun Kalan village, near here, in which 347 persons were examined and 34 cataract operations were performed. Medicines and spectacles were distributed free of cost, according to Mr Daljit Singh Sabherwal, president of the club, here on Monday.

Robbed: Unidentified armed persons snatched Rs 2,58,000 from a petrol pump manager, Mr Gurcharan Singh Bhatti, at pistol point on the local GT Road on Monday. The Maruti car-borne looters managed to escape after firing in the air, the police has said. A case has been registered though no arrests have been made yet.top

Revolver seized: The police has seized a countrymade revolver and four cartridges from Saunti village under Naggal police station. A case was registered on Monday.

HISAR

CCSHAU professor: Dr S.K Bhatia, professor in the Department of Animal Nutrition, CCS Haryana Agriculture University, has been elected fellow of the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS) in recognition of his outstanding contribution in the discipline of animal nutrition.
Awarded: Dr Kuldip Singh Dhindsa, a senior professor of the local CCSHAU has been conferred the Man of the Year Award for 1998 by the American Biographical Institute (ABI). According to a communication received from the ABI, Professor Dhindsa has been given the award for his overall accomplishments and contributions to science and society.

KALKA

Demand: The action of the Food and Supplies Department of supplying wheat flour to the ration depots of the town through Confed has not only put depot holders but also consumers in an inconvenient situation. This arrangement has led to delayed supplies at the depots and the consumers too have to bear an extra cost of Rs 4 on every 10 kg bag. A spokesman for the Depot Holders Association, Mr Ramesh Gupta, said here on Monday, since the supplies had been routed through Confed, there was no certainty of supply even after making full payment. They have demanded direct supply from the mills, as earlier.

ROHTAK

Distributed: The Minister of State for Animal Husbandry, Ms Kanta Devi, distributed tricycles, artificial limbs and blankets to poor and physically handicapped persons on behalf of the Jhajjar Red Cross Society, Jhajjar, on Monday. The Secretary of the society, Mr Ajay Mishra, said the society had distributed 45 sewing machines, 300 blankets, 56 tricycles and 39 artificial limbs worth nearly Rs 5 lakh among widows, poor and physically handicapped persons.

SIRSA

Arrested: The Sirsa police busted an inter-state gang of vehicle thieves here on Sunday and arrested a member of the gang Bhero Singh Rajput, hailing from Rajasthan, near Ellenabad, 40 km from here, the Senior Superintendent of police, Sirsa Mr B.S. Sandhu, said here on Monday. A stolen jeep was also recovered.
Succumbed: Rajinder Kumar (22) of Sirsa succumbed to his injuries at the local Civil Hospital here on Monday. According to sources, Rajinder received 80 per cent burn injuries at his residence on Wednesday.
Suspended: Rama Nand, an employee with the local Municipal Council has been suspended by Dr Avtar Singh, Deputy Commissioner, Sirsa, on charge of alleged negligence while on duty, here on Monday. According to sources, four other employees of the MC are already under suspension.
Workshop held: A one-day workshop on "Behaviour of police with public" was organised at the local police lines here on Monday. It was attended by local police personnel SSP, B S Sandhu, has said. The next district-level workshop would be organised on December 5 also at the local police lines.
Two injured: Shakuntla and her pregnant daughter Rani were seriously injured by Billu and his son Raju near Vaidwala village, about 8 km from here, on Monday. According to sources, a scuffle arose when Shakuntla and her daughter objected to Billu parking a horsecart outside their house and asked him to shift it which he refused to do. The alleged accused were reportedly absconding. The incident has been reported to the police.
Meeting held: Registration of birth and deaths in Sirsa district is to be computerised, Dr Avtar Singh, Deputy Commissioner, Sirsa, said while presiding over the district-level birth and deaths coordination committee meeting held at his camp office on Monday. He also issued directions to civil surgeons to ensure registration of births taking place in private nursing homes in the records of the Civil Hospital.
Legal aid cell: In order to educate the economically backward and weaker sections of society about their judicial rights a district-level free legal aid samiti has been constituted under the chairmanship of the District Sessions Judge, Sirsa. B. Diwakar, Chief Judicial Magistrate, and secretary on the samiti said here on Tuesday that poor persons with an income below Rs 18,000 per annum, women, children and those belonging to the Backward and Scheduled Castes in this district would be covered under this scheme.

SONEPAT

Cattle menace: Stray cattle has become a major nuisance in the city, particularly in the vegetable and fruit market. The abandoned cattle not only block the traffic but are also a cause of accidents. Representatives of various organisations urged the district administration on Monday to direct the authorities concerned to take immediate steps to check the menace.
Sugarcane crushing: The crushing of sugarcane at the local cooperative sugar mill begun after the performing of a "yajna" by the Deputy Commissioner-cum-Chairman of the mill here on Monday. The Managing Director and other staff members were also present. The DC assured sugarcane growers that payment would be made to them on time by the mill management.

Houses gutted: At least two houses were gutted at Sawana village, in Dehra subdivision, on Monday. No injuries were reported. The SDM, Dehra, Mr S.S. Chambyal, visited the spot and sanctioned a sum of Rs 5,000 per family as relief.top
