Strike
Non-teaching employees of private colleges observed strike on Friday against the delay on the part of the government to release the revised pay scales as per the recommendations of the Fifth Pay Commission.
Favouritism

A ruling party MLA, Mrs Laxmi Kanta Chawla, alleged in a press note on Friday that the Education Department had indulged in nepotism while ordering 91 transfers. She added that the department had violated the rules by appointing junior principals as district education officers.

Congress Committee
The following have been elected office-bearers of the District Congress Committee: president — Mr Hukam Singh Yadav; vice-president — Mr Satpal Sikri; general secretary — Mr Vinod Kumar Kal; and treasurer — Mr Dharampal.

KAPURTHALA

Medical camp
A medical and an eye checkup camp, is being organised at Begowal on September 3 in connection with the death anniversary of Bawa Charanjit Singh. Medicines free of cost will be provided to the patients.
Rate lists
Mr Usha R. Sharma, Deputy Commissioner, has directed the district Food and Supplies controller to ensure that the shopkeepers display rate lists at their shops.
Purchasing centres
The district administration has set up 46 purchasing centres for the purchase of paddy in 11 zones, according to the Deputy Commissioner. Each zone has been put under the supervision of a Subdivisional Magistrate, an Executive Magistrate and tehsildars.
Held
Mohinder Singh, a clerk in the office of the Deputy Commissioner, was arrested by the police on Thursday for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 300 from Jaswinderjit Singh. A case has been registered.

The Sultanpur Lodhi police has registered a case against Jaspal Singh of Railway Station Mohalla for allegedly attempting to kill his wife, Baljit Kaur, by setting her on fire on Thursday.

Water scarcity
The problem of drinking and irrigation water being faced by residents of the Kandi area would be tackled on priority basis. This was stated by Dr Roshan Sunkaria, Deputy Commissioner, while presiding over a "sangat darshan" at Saroya village on Friday. Various development and welfare schemes would also be undertaken during the year, the DC said.

Inquiry report
The enquiry committee headed by Mr Pirthi Chand, Director, Social Welfare, to look into all aspects of the death of Pinky, a 12 year old girl student of Government High School, Sector, 38 will submit its report on Saturday night. This was stated by Mr Chand late this evening.

Donation
Members of the Marble Traders Association (Kajheri), donated a sum of Rs 1 lakh towards the Prime Minister's Relief Fund. According to a statement by Mr S.S. Sethi, president of the association, the local MP, Mr Satya Pal Jain congratulated them on the noble gesture.
Convention
The 19th convention of the Federation of Indian Photography will be organised in the city from December 25 to 27, a press release of the Photographic Society of Chandigarh said here on Friday.
Tree plantation drive
A total of 100 saplings were planted as a part of a three day tree plantation drive in Government College for Girls, Sector 11, which concluded here on Friday. According to a press release, Dr C.L. Narang, director of NSS in Panjab University was the chief guest.
Onam celebrations
The Kerala Samajam, Sector 30, will organise a cultural programme and other traditional events at the Banga Bhavan on August 30 to mark Onam celebrations, a press release of the organisation said here today. A "Kaikotti kali" performance will be the highlight of the function.

Undertrial freed
A group of youths freed an undertrial prisoner from police custody while he was being brought back to jail from Rewari after a court hearing on Thursday. The freed prisoner has been identified as Ramroop belonging to Ladravan village in Bahadurgarh subdivision.

Suicide
Ravi Kumar (24) of Mandi Dabwali, 60 km from here, committed suicide after consuming poison at his house on Thursday. The cause of the suicide is not known.
Dead
Dinesh Grover of the local Dwarkapuri locality succumbed to his injuries at Hisar on Friday. According to sources, he was injured when his scooter collided with a cycle on Thursday.
Car stolen
A Maruti car belonging to Dr Harrattan Singh Gandhi, a resident of Khairpur Colony here, was reportedly stolen from his house on Friday.
Raped
Hardeep Singh and Nihal Singh of Nakodar village were arrested by the Ellenabad police on Friday under Sections 376 and 34, IPC, on the charge of raping a woman of Talwara village on Tuesday.

Mr Jagdish Gupta has been nominated as the president of the Beopar cell of the district unit of Janata Dal on Friday. Mr Krishan Kumar and Mr Hari Singh were nominated as the presidents of the Sonepat and Baroda assembly constituencies in the district.
Molestation

The Ghanaur police has registered a case against Satpal and a woman of Shahpur Tagga village for the alleged molestation of a woman of the same village. According to the police, the woman was working in a field when Satpal allegedly raped her with the help of another woman.

Sentenced
The Chief Judicial Magistrate, Jagadhri, Mr A.K. Verma, sentenced Behari Lal to six months' imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1000 under the Food Adulteration Act on Thursday.top

Arrested
The police here has arrested Rukamdeen, Dharamchand and Bhagat Ram for allegedly carrying 207 cases of liquor without permit in a vehicle at Suhar Ghat, near here. The SP stated on Friday that a case under the Himachal Pradesh Excise Act had been registered.

SUNDERNAGAR

Killed
Vijay Kumar of Delhi, at present a resident of the local Purana Bazar, was killed when his vehicle was involved in an accident on the national highway near Dhanotu, 2 km from here on Wednesday. A case has been registered under Sections 279 and 304A, IPC.top
