ABOHAR

Cremated
The body of Ravinder Singh (25), a sportsman, was cremated on Thursday after conducting a postmortem examination at Rupana village. A case was earlier registered at Kothbhai police station under Section 302, IPC. Family sources said Ravinder, son of Mr Gurdev Singh Virdi, was taken away by some unidentified persons on August 15. His decomposed body was found on August 18.
Electrocuted

A 24-year-old son of a vegetable seller died of electric shock on Wednesday while trying to remove a wet gunny bag from a fan.
Dharna

Employees of the PSTC staged a dharna in front of the Divisional Office here on Wednesday on the call of the state unit of the Employees Welfare Union to express resentment over the proposed shifting of the headquarters of the division from Abohar to Malout.
Caught
Two young boys who had allegedly been cheating women for some days on the pretext of washing gold ornaments, were reportedly caught in Anar Street here on Wednesday. The police, however, declined to confirm their arrests.
Demonstration

The coordination committee of the PWD Employees' Union has decided to hold a demonstration on August 24 at the office of the DSP here to press their demand for the arrest of a woman who had allegedly connived at the rape of a minor girl by a resident of Sayyedwala village.

Vanamahotsava
The Lions Club Amritsar (Golden Temple) celebrated Vanamahotsava by planting saplings on the premises of Government Primary School, Ganda Singh Wala.
Beautification

The Amritsar Vikas Manch (AVM) has demanded beautification of the road between the G.T. Road and Golden Temple in preparation of the 300th birth anniversary of the 'Khalsa Panth'. In a communication sent to the Chief Minister, the AVM general secretary, Mr Charanjit Singh Gumtala, urged that the approach road to the Golden Temple should be lined with fountains on either side.

BATHINDA

Campaign
The district administration in association with voluntary organisations and village panchayats has launched a campaign to make Bathinda district more green. The Deputy Commissioner, Mr S.R. Ladhar, in a press note issued on Thursday said that 2 lakh saplings of 10 different varieties would be planted in the district by August 24. He said that each panchayat of the district had been given 500 saplings free of cost by the Forest Department.

JALANDHAR

Recruitment
112 Infantry Battalion (Territorial Army) Dogra, Jalandhar cantonment, will recruit soldiers, general duty categories, on August 25 and 26. The candidate should be a matriculate and a domicile of Punjab. Sportsmen who have played at the district and state-level will be given preference.
Medical camp
The National Association for Voluntary Sterilisation and Family Welfare of India, a social organisation meant for the welfare of mother and child, is organising a free medical camp for women at Haripur village on August 23.
Shagun schemes
Under the 'shagun scheme' of the state government 3,819 girls from Scheduled Caste families have been given money for their marriages. This was stated by the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Som Parkash, here on Thursday. He said 4946 applications had been received by the local administration in this regard.

The district police has arrested Tarlok Singh, an Akali leader, on a charge of extorting money from Mr Joginder Singh, a resident of Kala Sanghian village. The police has registered a case under Section 420 of the IPC.

Mr Resham Singh Thiara has been nominated member of the state-level Public Relation Committee by the Punjab Government.

Vaccination camp
As many as 700 students of different local schools were vaccinated against Hepatitis-B during a series of mobile camps organised by the regional workstation of the Department of Social Service and Survey, International Shree Gita Ashram, which ended at DAV School in Sector 8 here on Friday.
Biodiversity workshop
A two-day teachers' training workshop, "Biodiversity and its conservation" organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature India, concluded at Shivalik Public School in Sector 41 here on Friday. Protest
The staff of the local branch of the State Bank of Patiala held a demonstration on Thursday in protest against the alleged slapping of a manager of the bank at Narwana by an officer. They demanded action against the guilty person and threatened to start an indefinite strike if no action was taken against him.
Killed

A police man, Mr Ramesh Kumar, was killed on the spot after he was knocked down by a vehicle near the Ramrai Gate here on Wednesday. According to a report the driver of the vehicle lost control and it hit Mr Ramesh Kumar resulting his death. The police has registered a case and arrested the driver

KAITHAL

Gang busted
The district police claims to have busted an inter-state gang of thieves with the arrest of four persons. The police also claims to have recovered some stolen goods from them.

PANIPAT

Blood donation camp
A blood donation camp was organised at Arya College here on Thursday by workers of the Congress on occasion of the 54 birth anniversary of Rajiv Gandhi. The camp was inaugurated by Mr Chander Mohan, MLA of Kalka. As many as 130 persons donated blood.
Open darbar

A block level open darbar was organised at Isran block, 20 km from here on Wednesday. It was presided over by Mr Anurag Rastogi, Deputy Commissioner of Panipat. He heard the grievances of 300 persons and directed the officers concerned to take appropriate action.
Plantation

A sapling plantation programme was organised by the State Bank of India, Industrial Branch, Panipat. The general manager of SBI, Mr Vijay Kumar Mahajan, planted about 200 saplings in the industrial area.

Cancer institute
A charitable institute of cancer management and research will be set up at Mirpur village, 8 km from here. Dr S.S. Yadav, former Director of the PGI, Rohtak, who is also Chairman of the Rambhagwan Charitable Trust, said the institute would start functioning in April.

Arrested
The anti-crime wing of the police department has arrested a proclaimed offender Jaswant alias Leela. A pistol and cartridge were seized from his possession. According to police he was involved in several cases of looting, dacoity and theft. The accused along with Satish, alias Babloo, of Fatehpur village, Rajinder, alias Jinder, of Kansala village and Krishan of Janti Kalan village had robbed some foreign tourists on July 26 last year.
Held

The police has arrested Lehna Singh, a resident of Rukhi village, in connection with the alleged murder of three members of his family, including his mother and brother, over a property dispute on August 5.

Postal employees' union
Mr Shiv Dayal of Shahabad has been elected president of the All-India Postal Employees Class III Union, Kurukshetra Division. The other office-bearers are: vice-presidents — Mr Om Parkash, Kurukshetra and Mr Ishwar Chand Mehta, Pipli; secretary — Mr Lal Chand Kataria; and treasurer — Mr Ram Phal Singh.

SIRSA

Road accident
Seven persons, including three women were injured in a road accident in this district on Wednesday night. According to sources a jeep carrying 12 persons was returning to Muktsar after attending a condolence meeting at Sirsa and collided with another jeep near Sahuwala village. The injured were hospitalised and were stated to be out of danger.

SONEPAT

Cleanliness campaign
The Sonepat Municipal Council launched a special cleanliness campaign on Thursday and deployed more safai workers for removing garbage and filth from the city, according to Mr Y.S. Gupta, secretary of the council.
