Bribery
A junior engineer of the PSEB posted at Khosa Dal Singhwala village was caught on Wednesday while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 1,000 from Mr Darshan Singh for installing a transformer, Mr Tara Chand Sharma, SP, Vigilance Bureau, said.
Strike

Members of the Tubewell Corporation Employees Welfare Union and the PSTC Worker Union observed a strike on Wednesday in support of their demands which included payment of dues after implementation of the new pay scales.

Raped
Geeta Rani, a resident of Arjun Nagar, was allegedly raped by a rickshaw puller and his accomplice here on Tuesday. On her complaint, the police registered a case under Section 376 of the IPC. Gurbachan Singh, one of the alleged rapists, has been arrested.

The Town Official Language Implementation Committee organised a meeting at the regional office of Indian Overseas Bank here on Wednesday. The meeting was presided over by Mr G. Sharan, Income Tax Commissioner, Ludhiana.

Varsity employees
The Punjabi University Employees Association at its meeting held here on Wednesday expressed resentment against the non-payment of arrears of the revised grades. Mr Kaur Singh Sekhon, president of the association, said while the arrears had been paid to government employees, no payment had been made to university employees for the past eight months.

Song contest
The Kendriya Arya Yuvak Parishad organised a national group song competition at the Arya Samaj, Sector 16, on Thursday. Army Public School, Chandimandir, won the first prize. A.C.C. D.A.V. Senior Public School, Surajpur, and Chaman Lal D.A.V. Senior Public School, Panchkula, won the second and third prizes, respectively.

A three-day Hindi workshop, organised by the Prasar Bharati, All-India Radio, concluded here on Wednesday. Mr D.P. Malik, Station Director of the local station of the AIR advocated promotion of Hindi without any prejudice towards English.

The Sector 46 Residents Welfare Society has urged the UT Health Secretary to convert the Sector 45 Civil Dispensary into a 50-bed hospital. A deputation of the association met the Finance and Health Secretary, Dr G. Vajralingam, on Thursday in this regard. It also demanded laboratory facilities in the existing dispensary.

Criticised
The Rehri Phaddi Market Association of Sector 19 has criticised the anti-encroachment drive launched by the enforcement staff of the local estate office of HUDA against the rehri and phaddi owners here for the past 15 days. A spokesman of the association said workers of the enforcement staff had destroyed their goods during the drive. He sought return of all rehris confiscated by HUDA. The association has urged the Chief Minister to rehabilitate them at a proper place.top

AMBALA

Delegation
A delegation of the Mini-Bank Karamchari Mahasangh met the Haryana Minister for Co-operation, Mr Narvir Singh, at Chandigarh on Tuesday in support of their demands. According to the general secretary of the mahasangh, the minister gave them the assurance that their genuine demands would be accepted.

FATEHABAD

Cultural programme
The district police will organise a cultural evening in the local Manohar Memorial College on August 22. The DIG Hisar range, Mr Veer Bahadur Singh, will be the chief guest. The cultural evening is being organised to commemorate India's Independence.

KURUKSHETRA

Test postponed
Kurukshetra University has postponed its entrance test for admission to C.P.Ed course to September 6. The test was originally fixed for August 27.

Mr Laxmi Kant Sharma has been appointed district chairman of the Kurukshetra Congress Seva Dal by Mr Rajiv Gugnani, president of the Haryana Pradesh Congress Seva Dal.

Shot dead
Mehar Singh, a tempo owner, was allegedly shot dead by two persons at Chatia Aulia village on Wednesday. The police has registered a case. Old enmity is said to be the cause of the crime.
Case registered
Dev Raj (18) was allegedly stabbed to death by some armed persons in Patel Nagar colony here on Tuesday. The police has registered a case.
Killed

Purshotam Singh (30), a truck driver, was killed in an collision between two trucks on the GT road near Panchi Gujran village on Tuesday. The victim belonged to Jammu. The body has been sent for a post-mortem.
Suicide

Babita (24) allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison at her residence in Bhatgaon village on Tuesday. A family quarrel is stated to be the cause of the suicide.
Gambling

Resentment prevails among residents of the city against the increasing incidence of gambling in the old city area. Residents alleged that the police has failed to check the menace.

YAMUNANAGAR

Mishap
Mr Hari Ram (40), a cyclist, was seriously injured when his bicycle collided with a scooter in the main market on Wednesday. He was taken to the PGI, Chandigarh where he succumbed to his injuries. A case has been registered.
