The District Magistrate, Mr Narinderjit Singh, has directed all wholesale dealers and retailers to display rate-lists in front of their shops. A case would be registered against the violators under the Essential Commodities Act.

Beopar cell
Mr Madan Lal Kapoor has been appointed chairman of the PPCC (Beopar cell) by the state PPCC president, Mr Amarinder Singh.
Blood donation camp: The Oriental Bank of Commerce, Civil Lines branch organised a blood donation camp on Wednesday in which 20 bank employees donated blood.

Ring road
The district Road Committee has approved the construction of fourth phase of ring road around the city to link the Bharwain road to the Una road, the Deputy Commissioner said here on Wednesday.
Nominated

Mr Nipun Sharma, president of the district unit of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, has nominated Mr Lalit Mohan Sharma and Mr Sanjiv Kumar as president and general secretary of the Mahilpur unit of the morcha, respectively.

Dharna
The Teachers Joint Morcha will organise a dharna on August 20 in front of the office of the District Education Officer, Ludhiana. Mr Joginder Azad, co-convenor of the Democratic Teachers' Union said here on Wednesday that the Morcha would stage a dharna to protest against the anti-teacher policies of the government.

LUDHIANA

Artificial limbs
A camp was organised at Guru Nanak Stadium where artificial limbs were given to more than 400 handicapped persons of the district. Artificial limbs worth Rs 21.82 lakh, were given free of cost to the handicapped. The Deputy Commissioner and the chairman of District Red Cross Society, Mr Arun Goel, said on the occasion that so far 908 persons had been provided with artificial limbs.
Bribery case

The local Vigilance Bureau caught Mr Amarjit Singh Sethi and Mr Hari Om, House Tax Inspector and sewadar, respectively, in the local Municipal Corporation, on a charge of accepting a bribe of Rs 1000 from Mr Harish Sood, a bank employee, for assessing the tax on his house.

MALERKOTLA

Aahrtias protest
The aahrtias of Ahmedgarh Mandi, 20 km from here, have started an indefinite strike and relay hunger fast in support of their demand for the construction of a new Grain Market. Five aahrtias each have been observing relay fast daily since August 17. Sarpanches and panches of about 40 villages of Ahmedgarh block have also supported their demand. According to a spokesman for the Aahrtias Association, the strike will continue till their demand was accepted.
Officer arrested

The local police has raided the house of Mohammad Rashid, Junior officer of the PSEB, at Binjoki village in Malerkotla subdivision and impounded a tempo of the board loaded with cement and iron. According to the police, these goods were stolen from the PSEB office at division 1, Ludhiana. A case has been registered against him.

Medical Camp
The NRI branch of the State Bank of Patiala here organised a free medical check-up camp on Tuesday at Mehndipur village, near here. Mr S.P. Narang, the Branch Manager, inaugurated the camp. Medicines were provided to the patients free of cost by the bank.
Insurance employees
Mr H.S. Baweja and Mr S.S. Kooner have been elected president and secretary, respectively, of the North Zone Insurance Employees' Association, Jalandhar Divisional Committee, here on Sunday.

SDCA
According to Mr T.P.S. Dhillon, J.T.O., Samrala Exchange, on Tuesday some more stations have been included in the Short Distance Charging Area (SDCA). Now the subscribers will have to dial 92 first, then code number and later the phone number of the respective stations. The towns and cities included in the SDCA are Nawanshahr, Balachaur, Ropar, Ludhiana, Malerkotla, Nabha, Mandi Gobindgarh, Sirhind and Jagraon.

Residents' memo
The Residents Welfare Society of the Central Government Employees Residential Colony, Sector 7, on Tuesday submitted a memorandum to the Adviser to the Administrator, Mr Jagdish Sagar, on his visit to the colony, demanding recarpeting of the roads, supply of clean drinking water, proper maintenance of parks and un-interrupted power supply.
Saplings

Case registered
The Sadar police has registered a case of murder against five persons for the alleged murder of Ajit Singh, driver in the Haryana Roadways, Gurgaon.

Water shortage
Residents of Sani and Kazi mohalla of this town has been facing acute shortage of drinking water. The residents alleged that authorities concerned turned a deaf ear to their problem.

KURUKSHETRA

Ban
The District Magistrate has prohibited the carrying of weapons of offence under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure 1973, within the district from August 19 to 23.

ROHTAK

Gate meetings
Members of the HSEB Workers Union held gate meetings outside the board offices in the district on Tuesday in protest against the 'privatisation' of the board by the state government. Mr Bharat Bhushan, general secretary of the district unit of the union, alleged that the authorities had not given an assurance to employees on service conditions.

SONEPAT

Three arrested
The Ganaur police has arrested three persons, residents of Thana Kalan village in this district, in connection with the alleged murder of a car driver Hari Om, whose body was recovered from Zainpur village recently.
Conference

The Haryana Ayurvedic Medicine Association will organise its annual conference on August 23 at Chhotu Ram dharamshala here. The conference will discuss the problems being faced by ayurvedic doctors.
Power failure
Mr S.K. Handa, Superintending Engineer, operation, HSEB, has denied the snapping of power transmission lines in the city on Sunday. He said power supply to one area was switched off because of a breakdown of a conductor in the transformer. There was no breakdown on 11 KV or 33 KV transmission system. It was only a local fault which was rectified.
Protest meeting

Representatives of various political parties and trade unions held a joint meeting here on Wednesday to register their protest against the reported cancellation of the transfer orders of the DFSC, Sonepat, by the state government.

Excellence award
Dr Anil Aggarwal, a local surgeon, has been selected for the International Medical Excellence Award for the year 1997-98 by the World Economic Development Federation. The award will be presented to Dr Aggarwal on the occasion of the international conference being organised in Delhi on August 22.
Patwari arrested

The local police has arrested Tara Chand, Patwari, for demanding a bribe of Rs 4000 from Mr Vinod Kumar, a resident of Vaghra village. A case has been registered against him under Sections 7, 13, 49, 89 of the Corruption Act.top

Demand
Residents of Bhatolikalan panchayat in a demand charter submitted to the Chief Minister, Mr P.K. Dhumal, have demanded upgradation of the government primary school at Jharmajri to middle standard. Balbir Thakur president Himalaya Yuvak Mandal, said the school had not been upgraded since 1952 and was situated at an inconvenient place.

Tourism
Tourism in Chamba has been hit due to the Kalaban and Satrundi carnages. Hoteliers here have demanded intensive combing on both sides of the border between Chamba and Doda districts. They say tourists, specially from Bengal and Gujarat, feel insecure to visit the valley.

NAHAN

Sapling plantation
During this year 2.50 crore saplings will be planted in the state and the 20 km area will be added under forest cover, said the Minister of Forest at Banethi. He said priority would be given to such species which would solve the problem of fuel and fodder in rural areas.
Foundation stone

Every village in the state will be linked with road within five years, Mr Mohendra Singh, PWD Minister said, at Khodon Wala village. He also laid the foundation stones of two rest houses at Tarubhela and Kamraoo which would be completed within a year.top
