Villagers' protest
Residents of Sayyedwala village staged dharna and held demonstrations at police stations of the city and Khuyiansarwer on Monday. Dharna was staged here to express resentment over the alleged inaction of the police in arresting culprits responsible for kidnapping Rameshwer, son of Mr Mool Chand, a former sarpanch of the village, on July 9. The dharna at Khuyiansarwer police station was staged to demand the arrest of a woman of Sayyedwala village, who was responsible for the rape of a minor girl but was not arrested by the police.

HOSHIARPUR

Shop gutted
According to the police, a garment shop was gutted in a fire at Saraja Bazaar in Haryana town on Tuesday. The fire was extinguished within an hour of being noticed. The exact cause, of the fire however, could not be ascertained.
Pre-recruitment camp

The District Sainik Board, Hoshiarpur, will hold a free pre-recruitment training camp for the wards of ex-servicemen, for recruitment in Army and the para-military forces, from September 7. According to a press note by Mr Iqbal Singh Sidhu, Deputy Commissioner cum Chairman of the board here on Tuesday interested youths should report to the District Sainik Welfare Officer along with their certificates on September 4.
Career guidance week

The District Employment Exchange will organise a Career Guidance Week from August 25. Mrs Kushalya Gupta, District Employment Officer, stated in a press note here on Tuesday that seminars would be organised at Government Girls School, Railway Mandi, Government Senior Secondary schools at Mahilpur and Garhshanker during the guidance week.

Breast feeding
The Department of Home Science Extension Education, Punjab Agricultural University, celebrated the "World Breast Feeding Week" at Dosanj Khurd village in Jalandhar district on Monday. As many as 60 farm women were told about the advantages of breast milk.

DCC president
Mr Charanjit Singh Chani, the local MLA, who has been appointed president of the district unit of the Congress by Capt Amrinder Singh, formally took over charge of his office here on Monday. He said the new office-bearers of the District Congress Committee would be announced shortly.top

Vanamahotsava
Students of Kendriya Vidyalya and Brigade Nursery School at Zirakpur, near here, took part in the two-day vanamahotsava celebrations which concluded on Tuesday. Brig S.N. Chatterjee, Brigade Commander, and his wife, Ruchira, inaugurated the celebrations by planting the saplings of mango and silver oak.

The following have been elected office-bearers of the Lions Club (Chandigarh Mid Town): president — Mr Mohan Sham Aggarwal; secretary — Mr Sarabjit Singh Behl; and treasurer — Mr Prem Kaushik.
Rally
Workers of the local unit of the Bahujan Samaj Party will hold a rally on Friday to protest against the non-issuance of SC/ST certificates in the city. This was stated by Mr M.R. Dhiman, president of the party, on Tuesday.
FCI dharna
The dharna by 81 security guards of the Food Corporation of India, who had not been paid salaries since May this year, entered the second day here on Tuesday. A press note of the All-India FCI Class IV Employee Union alleged the salaries had not been paid despite the orders of the Assistant Labour Commissioner.

Pouch in bottle
A shopkeeper of Sector 21 Maheshpur claims to have purchased a bottle of soft drink which contains a pouch of pan masala. According to Mr V.P. Sharma, a sweet shop owner, he had received his supply from a distributor of industrial area and was about to open it for a customer when he noticed the pouch floating about in the bottle.

Faulty phones
More than 50 per cent telephones of Bohra Kalan in this district have been out of order for the past 10 days. Residents have threatened that if the fault was not rectified at the earliest, they would deposit their instruments with the authorities concerned as a protest.
No telephone

The police station of Bilaspur Chowk situated on the Delhi-Jaipur highway in this district is without a telephone. It is a handicap when an accident takes place on the highway.

Aggarwal sabha
Dr Narendra Bansal, a former local Municipal Commissioner, was unanimously elected president of the local Aggarwal Sabha here on Sunday. He was authorised to nominate the office-bearers and members of the executive body.

Mr Bharat Bhushan Gupta has been appointed president of the Shahabad city unit of the Indian National Lok Dal by Mr Khairati Lal Singla, president of the district unit.

SONEPAT

Direct dialling
The Department of Telecommunications linked the town with Delhi, Rohtak, Bahadurgarh, Gohana, Safidon, Panipat, Baraut and Baghpat through a direct dialling facility. According to official sources, the subscribers would now be able to make calls by adding code 91 instead of zero along with towns code. The call would be considered a local call and the time enhanced to three minutes.top
