Self-employment
The Public Relations Minister, Mr Seva Singh Sekhwan, while addressing panches in Sekhwan village under Batala sub-division said that the government had earmarked Rs 585 crore during the current year to provide employment to 80,000 youth. They would be given training in various skills and interest rate loans to start an enterprise under the self-employment scheme.

LUDHIANA

Plantation drive
A well-known freedom fighter, Mr Mohinder Pratap Nayyar, launched a sapling plantation drive in and around Shaheed Udham Singh Nagar park here on Saturday. He gave a stirring exhortation to the gathering, mentioning instances of courage and valour of Shaheed Udham Singh and Shaheed Bhagat Singh, about whom he had first-hand knowledge. Mr A.S. Grewal, Mayor, was the chief guest.

MOGA

Telecom department
Residents of the town urged the Telecommunication Department on Monday to make arrangements for the transmission of telegrams and fax messages through the telegraph offices here even on gazetted holidays and on Sunday afternoon.
Demand
In view of the high price of wheat and wheat flour in the market here the residents have urged the district administration to make immediate and proper arrangements to supply these to the consumers through government fair price shops.

Children's park
Mrs Neena Chhibber, president of the Army Wives Welfare Association, Guraj division, inaugurated a children's park at the TCP area at Mamoon Cantonment. This park was built and maintained by 20 Kumaon Regiment. A large number of saplings were planted by the children on the occasion.

Honoured
On the occasion of Independence Day, the Lions Club (Sheesh Mahal) here honoured Dr T. N. Sharma, a member of All-India DAV College Management Committee, for his services to the weaker sections of society.
Strike

The Sub-Station Technical Union of the PSEB in a statement said here on Sunday that they would participate in the strike to be observed on August 19, if their demands were not met.
Medical camp

A free medical camp was organised jointly by the gram panchayat of Kheri Gujran and Dera 'Sachha Sauda, Sirsa at Kheri Gujran village on Sunday. The camp was inaugurated by Mr Rakam Singh, sarpanch of the village. A team of 22 specialists examined over 1000 patients, who were also given medicines free of cost.

PHAGWARA

Effigy burnt
An effigy of Mr Parkash Singh Badal Chief Minister, Punjab was set aflame here on Monday afternoon by workers of the BSP, and the CPM. They were protesting against rising prices and hike in bus fare and power tariff. The effigy was burnt on the G T Road near Sugar Mill Chowk amid slogans against the Punjab government and Mr Badal.

SANGRUR

Road repair
The president of the local municipal council, Mr Mahesh Kumar, said over 1 km stretch of road from the truck union office to the cremation ground here, had been repaired and metalled.

The following have been elected office-bearers of the Chandigarh Kendriya Ramlila Maha Sabha: chairman — Mr Chaturbhuj Singla; president — Mr Subhash Kataria; general secretary — Mr Sabar Singh Bisht; senior vice-president — Mr Prem Shammi; vice-presidents — Mr Ishwar Dass Singla, Mr Joginder Singh, Mr Bhagwat Prasad Gaur, Mr Prem Singh Gosain and Mr Harish Bainjwal; treasurer — Mr Raghubir Singh Kharola.

Cultural programme
As part of the concluding celebrations of the golden jubilee of Indian Independence, a colourful function was organised by the Recreation Club on the premises of the Labour Bureau in Sector 17 on Saturday. Patriotic songs, potato race for ladies, a fancy dress contest and an educational quiz were the highlights of the programme, according to a press note.

Quiz results
A team of St Stephen's School, Sector 45, won the first prize in the "Geo map quiz" organised by the Survey of India here on Monday. Yadavindra Public School, SAS Nagar, and St Xavier's Senior Secondary School, Sector 44, won the second and the third prizes, respectively.

Elections
Elections to the management and education committees of the Sector 19-D, Gurdwara Shri Guru Singh Sabha will be held on August 23 at 7 p.m., it was officially announced here on Monday.top

FATEHABAD

Thieves arrested
The police has busted a gang of wheat grain thieves by arresting five members of it with the stolen food-stuff. The culprits admitted having stolen the food grains from many places in the district and elsewhere. The police has registered a case under Sections 457 and 380 of the IPC.

Awarded
Mr Sandeep Sanghi, of Mahendragarh district was given an award by the Haryana Health Minister, Mr Om Parkash Mahajan, on the eve of Independence Day for his social work.

SONEPAT

Raid
The Ganaur police arrested six armed youths, in a raid on Sunday night. The police seized two country-made pistols and a motor-cycle from them. A case under the Indian Arms Act has been registered against them.

Under the Operation Sahyog, launched by the 2/3 Gorkha Rifles to commemorate 50 years of Independence, 346 patient were treated free in a medical camp organised at Anech village near Dagshai on Friday.
