ABOHAR Case registered
A large
number of men and women staged a dharna in front
of the city police station on Friday in protest
against the delay in booking the suspect who had
allegedly tried to rape a minor girl. The police,
however, registered a case under Sections 376,
511 of the IPC against Chhinderpal on Saturday.

The
Shastri Market Association here has requested the
Union Railway Minister to open a platform ticket
counter at the main entrance to the railway
station as people were facing inconvenience in
collecting tickets from the other side of the
station.

Singh and Mr Naresh Kumar of the SAD-BJP combine
were elected president and senior vice-president,
respectively, of the local Municipal Council,
said Mr Tejvir Singh, SDM-cum-Returning Officer,

vice-president.

Piara
Singh, a resident of Abhun village, allegedly
murdered his brother Channa Singh (35) and
injured his six-year-old son in sleep on Friday.
The Sadar police has registered a case against
him.

Body found
The body
of an elderly person has been found at Grain
Market in Dhariwal. A case under Section 302,
IPC, has been registered.
Closure
Mr S.K.
Sandhu, District Magistrate, has issued orders
for the closure till August 11 of all liquor
shops in the district, in view of the forthcoming
elections to the local Gurdwara Management
Committees.
Ban
Mr S.K.
Sandhu, District Magistrate, through an order
issued here on Sunday, banned the carrying of
weapons in the district till August 15. The
order, will not apply to policemen, paramilitary
forces, and Home Guard jawans on duty.

The police
has seized 90,000 ml of illicit liquor from
Rachhpal Singh of Jhangi and Romesh Kumar, of
Sujanpur and 15,180 ml of illicit liquor from
Roop Lal, of Amakhian. The accused have been
arrested. The police also seized 90,000 ml of
English wine from Sunil Kumar, Rajesh Kumar and
Ashok Kumar.

Road safety
Students
of Apeejay School has organised a road safety
rally here which was flagged off by Mr Manmohan
Luthra, DTO. Speaking on the occasion, he asked
the heads of educational institutions to
discourage students from bringing vehicles to the
schools.

Scholarship
The Alumni
Association of A.S. College will start a
scholarship for brilliant and needy students from
this session. This was decided at a meeting of
the office-bearers held at A.S. Senior Secondary
School here on Saturday. Mr Boota Singh,
president of the association, said the
association would select about 20 students for
the scholarship.

Literacy
campaign
Under the
"Literacy campaign week" the local
Rotary Club has organised camps at Bangala colony
and Kharar Textile Mills Labour Colony here.
Children up to the age of 15 were identified and
the club decided to impart free education to
them, according to Mr Harpreet Singh Rekhi,
spokesman of the club.

A
plantation programme was held under the
vanamahotsav campaign launched by the youth wing
of the SAD at Jagraon on Saturday. Mr Charanjit
Singh Atwal, Speaker, Punjab Vidhan Sabha,
exhorted the youth to make the state green by
planting saplings.

Accident
Three
persons, including the driver of a truck and
driver and conductor of an oil tanker, were
killed on the spot in an accident involving three
vehicles near Panjgrain on the Moga-Kotkapura
road on Saturday, the police said on Sunday. The
truck driver was suspected to be under the
influence of liquor. The police has registered a
case.

Mohan Puri, a former Chairman of the local

Resolution
The Bar
Association, Pathankot, has passed a resolution
under the presidentship of Mr Ashok Prashar and
denounced the notification of the PSEB according
to which a lawyer using his residence for
official work would be charged for electricity at
the commercial rate for the whole of the
premises. He said lawyers would not attend courts
on Saturday in protest against the decision. He
also gave a call to the bar associations in the
state to abstain from court work on August 11.
Copies of this resolution were forwarded to the
Chief Minister, the Chairman of the PSEB, the
Forest Minister, and all MLAs of Gurdaspur
district.

K.D. Singh, a prominent eye specialist and Akali
leader, has been nominated as a member to the
state-level Public Relations Department
Committee.

Demand
The
Bharatiya Khadya Nigam Karamchari Sangh has
demanded that the purchase of paddy should not
start before October 1 or till the paddy crop was
fully mature. The state secretary of the sangh,
Mr K.K. Sharma, and the senior additional state
secretary, Mr S.P. Sood, said in a statement here
on Saturday that the sangh wanted to save the
foodgrain by improving the infrastructure of
paddy procurement in Punjab.

Vanamahotsava
was celebrated in the Government Ayurvedic
College here in collaboration with the Lions
Club, Supreme. Mr Gurdev Singh Sidhu, MLA,
Shatrana, presided over the function. Saplings of
260 medicinal plants were planted in the campus
by staff and students of the college and members
of the club. Dr P.K. Kansal, Principal of the
college, highlighted the need for cultivating
rare medicinal plants in Punjab.

Dead
An
unidentified 55-year-old woman, who was crossing
the railway tracks, was accidentally run over by
a train near Chiheru, 10 km from here on Friday.

Raids
Mr Amarjit
Singh of the Enforcement Directorate, Punjab,
alongwith officers of the Sales Tax Department,
conducted raids in the town on Thursday night.
Six trucks belonging to Jalandhar-Delhi Goods
Company, Himachal Pradesh -Jammu Road Transport
and Patiala Express Goods Carrier were detected.
The trucks were carrying goods (parchoon) worth
Rs 15 lakh under false documents.
