Dharna: Employees of the local Industrial Training Institute staged a dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office on Friday to press their demands which include special pay to instructional and supervisory staff and time-bound promotional scales.

KAPURTHALA

Gang busted: The district police claimed to have busted a gang of robbers with the arrest of four of its members, according to Mr Iqbal Singh, SSP.

Rally: Workers of the Kirti Kisan Union and the Pendu Mazdoor Union staged a rally in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office here on Thursday. They were protesting against the hike in bus fares and electricity rates.

PATIALA

Function: A training programme for agents of the Mahila Pradhan Kshetriya Bachat Yojna of the National Savings Organisation has been organised by the Deputy Regional Director here. As many as 270 women agents from five districts of Patiala circle attended the programme.

MALERKOTLA

Contact programme: A mass-contact programme was organised at Kup Kalan on Saturday. Mr Nusrat Ali Khan, Minister for Sports, Punjab, listened to the grievances of the people.

ABOHAR

Remand: The police remand of Anil Kumar Singhmar, a resident of Dharampura village, was extended till August 10 by the Senior Judge, Mr B.S. Mangat, here on a request by the prosecution on Friday. He was arrested in the kidnap case of Shankar Lal, a small farmer and a tenant of the accused.

Resentment: Resentment prevails among residents of Sunder Nagari against the "apathy" of the municipal authorities towards the sewerage problem of the locality.

BATHINDA

Died: Gurjant Singh (25) of Gobindpura village in the district died after allegedly consuming poison, Civil Hospital sources said here on Friday.

GURDASPUR

Banned: Mr S.K. Sandhu, District Magistrate, has banned the plying of passenger vehicles, including buses and autorickshaws, after 10 p.m.with immediate effect. The vehicles plying after 8 p.m. will be required to have a police escort.

Burnt alive: Bimla, a housewife, was allegedly burnt to death at Sudkain village in the district, for not bringing adequate dowry, according to a report on Friday. The police has registered a case under Section 498 and 304-B of the IPC against her husband, her father-in-law and two brothers-in-law.

KHANNA

Mahila Mandal: The following have been elected office-bearers of the local Mahila Mandal: president — Ms Charnjit Kaur; vice-president — Ms Swarn Kaur; chairman — Ms Hardeep Kaur; and treasurer — Ms Paramjit Kaur.

MANSA

Dharna: The District Tax Bar Association held a dharna on Friday against the "rude behaviour" of the Assistant Excise and Taxation Commissioner towards the tax lawyers.

Camp: The local Blood Donors Council and the Health Department organised a blood donation camp at Government Senior Secondary School, Saroya, 20 km from here, on Thursday.

A blood donation camp will be organised by Government College for Girls, Sector 11, on August 10 on the college campus.

Conference: The first zonal conference of the All-India Financial Corporation Employees Federation will be held here on August 10, Mr Balwinder Singh Baidwan, vice-president of the federation, said here on Saturday.

AMBALA

Vaccination camp: The regional centre of the Department of Social service and Survey, International Sri Geeta Ashram (IGSA), USA will organise a subsidised hepatitis-B vaccination camp at the cantonment here on Sunday.

Traffic blocked: Residents of Premnagar blocked traffic on the GT Road near the central jail bridge on Thursday in protest against the irregular supply of power. They raised slogans against HSEB officials and the district administration.

Booked: The police has booked Mr Ram Kishen, former personal assistant of the former Deputy Speaker of the Haryana Vidhan Sabha, Mr Sumer Chand Bhatt, under Section 506 of the IPC on a complaint lodged by the District Education Officer, Mr Dharam Pal Sharma.

GURGAON

Murdered: Kani Devi (85), a resident of Krishna Colony, was allegedly murdered at her residence on Friday. According to the police, she was stabbed with a sharp-edged weapon.

Case registered: Three persons forcibly drove away the car of Mr A.K. Verma, a resident of Sector 7, on Thursday. The police has registered a case under Section 392 of the IPC.

SIRSA

Nominations: Mr Balaram, district president of the Freedom Fighters Association, has been nominated member of the Haryana State Freedom Fighter Sangathan Executive Committee.

Demands: Members of the local unit of the Haryana State Electricity Board Workers Union staged a rally at the local power house on Thursday. They were demanding release of house rent and medical allowance.

Protest: Farmers of various political parties of this district protested against the inadequate supply of water and power under the banner of the Kisan Sangharsh Samiti here on Thursday. They burnt the effigy of Prof Ganeshi Lal, Minister for Civil Supplies.

Body found: The decomposed body of a middle-aged person was recovered near the Ding railway station on Thursday. It was sent for a post-mortem examination.

Accident: Ramandeep Kaur (32) threw herself along with her minor son in front of a train near Kanganpur village on Thursday. Both were killed instantly. A domestic dispute was stated to be the cause of the tragedy.

Arms recovered: The police here recovered two 12 bore pistols and five cartridges from Rashem of Kotkapura and Harbans Singh of the local Thear mohalla on Thursday. A stolen Maruti car was found in their possession.

HISAR

Postponed: The state unit of HAFED Employees Union has decided to postpone its proposed rally to be held in front of its head office at Chandigarh on August 12. According to the president of the union the managing director, HAFED, has given an assurance that their demands will be met soon.

SONEPAT

Suicide cases: Three cases of suicide have been reported from the city and nearby villages during the past 24 hours. According to the police, all of them died of poisoning. The bodies have been sent for a post-mortem.
Land grab: The Residents Welfare Association, on Friday, protested against the alleged grabbing of public and municipal land by shopkeepers. It urged the district authorities to launch a special campaign for the removal of encroachments.

YAMUNANAGAR

Telecom union: The following have been elected office-bearers of the local All-India Telecom Employees Union Class-III branch: president — Mr Duni Chand; vice-president — Mr Gulzar Chand; organising secretary — Mr Harish Chander; and treasurer — Mr Rishi Pal Singh.

ROHTAK

Dowry death: Kavita, wife of Bijender of Rajendra Colony here, was allegedly burnt to death recently by her in-laws for not bringing enough dowry. The police has registered a case under Sections 304-B and 34, IPC against the husband, mother-in-law, her brother-in-law and sister-in-law.

Eye camp: The district Blindness Control Society organised an eye camp at Ghumarwin, near here, on Friday. As many as 506 patients were examined and 27 operated for cataracts. The society will also organise a five-day eye camp at Nainadevi from August 11.

Health camp: The district Medical and Health Department will organise a child and maternity health camp at Harlog village on August 20, the Chief Medical Officer, Dr M.L. Mahajan said on Saturday.

SHIMLA

Murder: Dal Bahadur allegedly murdered Sunita Devi, a resident of Rohroo, and injured another woman, Anuradha, at Rohroo on Thursday. The accused has been arrested. In another incident, the police recovered the body of Ram Kali (30) who had been missing since August 3 from Tiali village under the Phagu police post.

Body found: The police here recovered the body of Parshotam Lal (47) of Amtrad, on the Pathankot-Mandi highway at Barai village on Saturday. The police is investigating.top
