Elected: The following have been elected office-bearers of the Azad Welfare Society (Ranjit Nagar, block-E) president — Mr Dalbara Singh; vice-president president — Mr Amrik Singh Bungar; general secretary — Mr Dalbir Singh; secretary — Mr Sukhdev Singh; and treasurer — Mr Jarnail Singh.

Shorthand classes: The Punjab Language Department will start free shorthand classes from September 1. Forms for the course will be accepted till August 10, said Mr Madan Lal Hasija, Director, Language Department, here on Thursday.

Ex-services league: The Indian Ex-Services League (Punjab and Chandigarh) has established a placement division at the local office. The division will register names of ex-servicemen and their dependents for employment in private, semi-government and autonomous bodies.

Workers union: The following have been elected office-bearers of the PSEB Class IV Workers Union : chairman — Mr Alam Singh; president — Mr Ram Pal; general secretary — Mr Jaswant Kumar; press secretary — Mr Dharampal; and treasurer — Mr Bakhtawar Singh.

Exhibition: Major-General K. C. Padha, GOC of a division, inaugurated an exhibition of Army weapons and equipment at Jyoti Stadium here on Thursday. A large number of college and school children visited the exhibition.

GURDASPUR

Case registered: The Sadar police has registered a case against four persons in connection with the murder of Ajit Singh in Bhander village. A case under Sections 302 and 34, IPC, has been registered against them.

Check dams: Mr S K Sandhu, Deputy Commissioner, has requested the state government to cover Dhar block under the irrigation scheme with the construction of check dams on the pattern of one constructed earlier at Narainpur village in Dunera subdivision. He said the check dams in this block would greatly help in boosting the economy of the area.

Gang busted: The local police claimed to have busted an inter-district gang of robbers with the arrest of 13 of its members and recovery of stolen goods, a pistol and three cartridges from them, said Mr Upinderjit Singh Ghumman, DSP, here on Thursday.

Memorandum: Residents of Murthal and its adjoining villages on Wednesday sent a memorandum to Mr Bansi Lal, Chief Minister, demanding transfer oftop the SDO, HSEB, and a enquiry into the complaints of mishandling of the distribution of electricity.

Powermen’s stir: The UT Powermen Union organised a rally outside the office of the Subdivisional Engineer, Mani Majra, here on Thursday in support of its demands. The demands include filling of vacant posts, supply of material for proper maintenance and repair of power lines, grant of PSEB scales to left-out categories of employees, supply of uniform and grant of time-bound promotion scales.

Cultural show: A colourful cultural programme was the highlight of the concluding function of the 50 years of India's Independence celebrations organised by the local office of the income tax department at the Technical Teachers' Training Institute (TTTI) auditorium here on Thursday.

Hepatitis-B camp: A subsidised hepatitis-B vaccination camp was organised by the Senior Citizen Association at the Lions Club, Sector 18, on Wednesday. As many as 60 persons, including women and children, were vaccinated against the disease, a press note of the association said. Meanwhile, the following have been elected office-bearers of the association: president -- Col P.C. Verman (retd); vice-presidents -- Brig J.S. Khurana (retd); Dr (Mrs) K. Vasudeva, and Brig Keshav Chandra (retd); and secretary -- Mr M.S. Walia.

Pregnant women: The Lions Club, Chandigarh Central, in collaboration with the UT Health Department organised a camp under the "Matri suraksha abhiyan" fortnight at Civil Dispensary, Sector 20-A. As many as 89 lactating and 93 pregnant women were examined at the camp.

Library hall: Capt Kanwaljit Singh, Finance Minister, Punjab on Thursday granted Rs 5 lakh from his discretionary fund to the Bar Association library in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The Chief Justice A.B. Saharya inaugurated Dara Singh Library Hall by unveiling the portrait of late Dara Singh, who was a senior advocate of the high court. Later, the minister also handed over a cheque for Rs 2 lakh to Advocate-General, G.S. Grewal for the purchase of furniture and other items for his office.

Builders’ plea: The Capital Builders’ Association on Thursday urged the engineering department of the Chandigarh Administration to call for open tenders for all works, and scrap the existing system of pre-qualification. According to Mr Jagdish Singh, chairman of the association, the process of pre-qualification of contractors for various works was wrong and against the law.

Open durbar: The district administration held an open durbar for the residents of Khol Fateh Singh village, located in the midst of the Shivalik hills, on Thursday. Major problems put before Deputy Commissioner Saroj Siwach pertained to construction of an approach road, changing of a damaged transformer, repairing of the non-functional panchayat telephone, changing of the existing water supply lines and the posting of a qualified midwife in the topvillage. The Deputy Commissioner assured the villagers that their problems would be solved.

Appointed: Dr J.P. Sharma has been appointed chairman of the doctors cell of the Haryana Pradesh Congress by Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Pradesh Congress chief.

Elected: Mr Ram Narain, Principal of the local University College and Mrs Sushila Rathi, Principal of the local M.K.J.K. College were elected president and vice-president, respectively, of the Maharshi Dayanand University Sports Committee here on Thursday.

SONEPAT

One held: A private medical practitioner of Fazilpur village has been arrested in connection with the kidnapping of a 32-year-old woman of the same village. According to the police, the woman was allegedly kidnapped on July 28. Both were medically examined in the Civil Hospital.

Distributed: The Managing Director of the local Cooperative Sugar Mill distributed sewing-machines free of cost to two widows at a function organised by the KRIBHCO in Bhatgaon village on Wednesday. The function was organised to celebrate 50-years of India's Independence.

No stock: Government fair price shops in this city are facing a shortage of ration commodities including levy sugar and kerosene. Depot holders allege that the department concerned has failed to supply the commodities in time.

Van mahotsav: A plantation programme was held under the Van Mahotsav campaign at the local Manohar Memorial College on Friday. The function was presided over by the SP, Mr Rajbir Deswal.

Demonstration: The Haryana Karamchari Maha Sangh held a demonstration in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office to press their demands which include bonus on central pattern.

Murder: Suresh, a farmer of Koyal village, was murdered while he was asleep in his farm. The cause of the murder is not known. The police has registered a case under Section 302 of the IPC.

Dharna: Members of the district unit of the Multipurpose Health Employees Association on Thursday held a dharna in front of the office of the Civil Surgeon here and presented a charter of demands to the Deputy Commissioner.

Open darbar: An open darbar held at Pundri on Wednesday, was presided over by the Additional Deputy Commissioner, Mr Lala Singh. A number of topcomplaints received at this darbar were redressed on the spot.

Body found: The police found the body of Darshan Singh(50) of Motila village from a well in Damtal on Thursday.
