Three children of Burial Jail inmates went to school for the first time today.
Rahul Gupta, Additional IG (Prisons), sent a five-year-old son of a convict undergoing life imprisonment, a two-and-a-half-year-old son of an undertrial and a four-and-a-half-year-old daughter of a convict undergoing life imprisonment, to Shemrock School, Sector 69, Mohali, today.
Earlier, these children were sent to the crèche constructed in the jail and run by the Social Welfare Department.
“While the school authorities have agreed to provide free education to these children, the expenditure on stationery and pick-and-drop facility will be incurred by the Chandigarh Police,” said IG (Prisons) AS Cheema.
As per the rules, women inmates are allowed to keep their children in prison till the age of six years. At present, three children are residing with their mothers in the prison.
