150 researchers, scientists for WIHG jubilee celebrations

As part of its Golden Jubilee celebrations, Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, Dehradun will organize a three-day “National Conference of Earth System Science with special reference to Himalaya” beginning Wednesday.

Addressing a press conference in Dehradun, Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology’s (WIHG) Director Dr Meera Tiwari disclosed that the WIHG that has a glorious history was established way back in 1968. It completed 50 years of its existence in 2018. She said the institute had done yeoman’s work in the sphere of earth sciences in the Himalayas and is credited with giving the nation three Padmri Shri awardees - DN Wadia, KS Valdiya and VC Thakur.

She disclosed that while Uttarakhand Governor KK Paul would inaugurate the national conference, while Waterman and Magsaysay awardee Rajendra Singh will be the chief guest. She apprised that over 150 eminent scientists and researchers which include delegates from prominent institutions of the country like Institute of Seismological Research (Gandhinagar), Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar, Geological Survey of India, Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences (Lucknow), HNB Garhwal University, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Mohali, Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee and Central Building Research Institute (Roorkee) will participate in the conference.

She apprised that the participants would be deliberating upon vital themes concerning the Himalayan ecosystem. She said considering the importance and complexity of the Himalaya, six significant areas have been chosen, which include crustal evolution and tectonic framework, climate change and geological processes, geological resource potentials and sedimentary basins.

“It is expected that outcome of the discussions undertaken during this national conference will facilitate a better understanding of major challenges in the field of Earth System Science today and this will contribute significantly towards many societal aspects”, Dr Meera Tiwari observed.
