Geometrical grace

The thing about trends is that they always find themselves in a cyclic loop of refurbishment and modern takes. All through the 1900s, geometric patterns were prevalent everywhere, be it the runway of Chanel or an interior design studio collection.

Taking cues from the early trends of the 1900s which employed simple geometry, to mid-century shapely prints and the end of the century modern take on geometry in architecture and interior design, geometric patterns have witnessed a wide array of design innovation. From boxes to triangles, to everything complex and simple, the scope for design modernisation is endless.

In a recent Netflix production called ‘The World’s Most Extraordinary Homes’, structures with umpteen geometric designs were explored, along with intelligently designed interiors. The base idea was to smartly take the symmetry and geometry of the outside (the surroundings of the property) and bring it inside the house itself; or in the overall architectural design of the house.

When it comes to interiors, walls do great with geometric patterns and textures; with a subtle light-play, any wall can get that designer feel from an Italian architectural firm, right out of the look-book.

Tiles — textured and rugged

Tiles these days, come in various different finishes, ranging from smooth and reflective to textured matte. However, the new player in this game is indented or engraved, textured tiles that take their inspiration from the patterns of nature. Raised finishes that give the appearance of bamboo sticks lined together, form beautiful straight lines that can be positioned in any way possible; add an innovative fixture, in a geometric design to bring complementing elements to the wall. These tiles are also readily available in different shapes — the most popular being the rhombus shape, which results in the pristinely geometric, Chevron pattern. Adding mirrors and art onto these walls offers a different dynamic to old school wall décor.

Wood-like texture: This type of tile design offers a very raw, rough engraved texture on sandstone. These tiles can be placed horizontally or vertically, depending upon the overall interior theme. Perfect for statement walls such as the ones in the living room or in exterior walls to give that expensive look to the property. To bring out the best in this patterned design, light fixtures can be placed according to the cut and placement type, to enhance the ruggedness of the texture.

Paper and paint

Another way to harness the beauty of geometric designs, without over spending is by means of wallpapers, paint jobs and wall-art appliques. Many home décor service providers offer wall papers in eclectic and minimal geometric prints and patterns, which have the ability to uplift the mood of any living space. From the classic black and white checker design, to a progressive play on triangles and circles; designs change like the patterns in a kaleidoscope and depending upon taste, these can be harnessed to bring a fresh perspective to your walls.

Taking a millennial take on walls, this type of client loves getting writings on the wall. Cursive text with minimal line design enclosure, adorned with enhancing lights, serve the aesthetic of this beauty seeking generation. If you don't wish to go overboard and change everything, a solid colour paint job, along with smartly placed wall art and hangings in a geometric pattern, as in a collage, is a great way to incorporate this fast evolving trend in your home. Anything can create a beautiful geometric design; all it needs is a little creativity, along with a sustainable way to do it.
